Title: Digital SLR Camera
Post by: -Doug- on November 30, 2007, 11:55:01 AM
I am looking into getting a digital SLR camera. Any recommendations? I am currently hovering between the Nikon D40 and the Canon Rebel XTi. Does any one here have either of those and what are you thought on them?

Thanks in advance.

I have a Nikon D50 & love it,massive step up from Point & Shoot.I think both cameras will be fine for you,but what i understand is that you are buying into a 'system'....whichever make you get you will probably stay with as the lens are all interchangeable..
Loads of forums out there aswell

I have the Nikon D40, and I love it. Very easy to use, and takes great pictures. :)

I've always used Canon SLRs, except for my first film camera, which was a Nikon.

CNET always has great review and here's a comparision:

And a buying guide:

I had a Canon Digital Rebel for a couple years, but wanted more flexibility than the original model offered so I bought a Canon 30D about a year ago and absolutely love it!!

Plus,  Canon has been top rated in the digital SLR world for quite awhile now...  Plus, from what I've read, the XTi is a great low end digital SLR for the money that is incredibly user friendly.

However, that being said, make your decision based upon what features you need and want, and which camera will get you most or all of those for the price.

Also, realize that with a digital SLR you will also need a good photo editing program.  I have used Adobe Photoshop Elements for years, but just recently got Adobe Photoshop CS3... HOLY CRAP!!  What a world of difference!!

The only advice I can offer (because everyone will have their own opinion on which is better) is to get either Canon or Nikon.  Both will offer great flexibility when it comes to lenses and accessories!

And here's the side by side comparision of the two you are looking at:

Thanks for the comments. We are leaning more towards the XTi as we already have a 35mm rebel and the lenses are interchangable. I let you know what I get and what I think about it.

We bought the XTi right before our baby was born and we love it!  There's a deal at Costco right now where you can get the XTi and a telescoping lens for about the same price as buying it at Best Buy.
