hello fellow chrome domes... just wondering... who do u call when the toilet isn't working or the a/c is leaking or anything else that could go wrong in the house. do u do it yourself or do u call the professionals? i'll start: 1st of all i'm not a handyman (wish i was). so...i'll call a friend 1st & if they can't do it. i will reluctantly call the professionals.
so how 'bout u? R U the sly handyman? or do u have handyman friends? or do u call the professionals? what's your story?

I am pretty damn handy, I pretty much have done most of the remodels and fix it type things with my houses. I feel there are not alot of things I can't do...
BUT
knowing your limits, financial, time, skill, etc. is what really makes someone handy. Having no heat in your house because you are going to fix it yourself or biting off more than you can chew to save some money is not too smart. I call pro's all the time for things, I choose my battles.
-
Like Marz, it depends what it is. If it's now too crazy of a job, I might do it myself. Though, now that I've completely remodeled my house, I'm weary of doing anything myself so I don't screw it up.
-
it depends what it is.
Ditto here. Perfect example....recently we had some heavy rain, and our gutters were overflowing. Since it really hadn't rained all that much prior to that, I knew they were clogged. So, I called a couple of buddies to see if anyone had an extension ladder (needed about 25'). One did, but he was out of town. In the interim, I called a gutter service guy. Took this guy 15 minutes to unclog the drainspout, and it cost me $20. Saved me time, potential injury, and $ buying my buddy some beer.
-
I call my sons-in-law..... O0
-
Also depends on what it is. A simple toilet repair is not a problem. Anything with electical or complex plumbing, the pro is gonna get my call.
-
Heck I just tear into it....most likely by the time im done..even if it just started out as a plumbing issue....you will prolly have to call the electrician, heating and air guy, the gas company, the phone company , satellite company...and oh hell why not...call your Insurance agent as well...never know.. lol

I'll do damn near anything once. If I don't know how to do it, I know someone who does. Or know someone who knows someone.
-
I'm with PigPen -- I'll do anything once.
If i'm not sure, I'll call my brother or my dad and see if they have any pointers on how not to destroy it by trying to fix it.
-
It also depends on what it is....but if my brother or me can't fix it then we get someone to come out.
-
Google is the only god I've ever seen, it has the answers to everything!- lyrics from a local band
If I can't do it I network with a buddy and I get someone to show me how, or read a tutorial
-
if it ain't major i will do it. usually me and my paw-in-law or my step dad can get just about anything done. including make beer disappear. ha ha
-
I like to think that I got some of my Dad's fix-it genetics, but I also know when to call the pros. If it's minor automotive (Changing the oil, coolant system, spark plugs) I can do it, but when it comes to the brakes I call up the neighborhood repair shop. I can handle a lot of electrical, just takes me time to narrow things down to the root problem. I can sweat and solder a water pipe when needed, but I won't do anything to the furnace or AC except change the filter.
-
Heck I just tear into it....
If thats the case I'll bet its your wife who is "tearing" more like bawling like crazy,J/K
:*)) :*)) :*))
For me, like everyone else it just depends on what the job is, I am quite handy so there are alot of things I can do my self, but I do know when to give it over to the pros.
-
Considering I have done so many different jobs in my life, I can fix most anything. Automobiles have became complicated with computers, but the basics still greatly apply. Back in the day my brother and I dropped 2 engines into his 72 grand prix, he blew 2 of them. But then we put the 455 heads on the 3rd engine, problem solved! I did AC for a while so got that covered, did carpentry work, some electrical but have a friend who is certified so got that covered, soem tile work... man I have been a work whore ;D
Oh, I can transport you to the morgue in a hospital also, then TimmJ can pick you up!! O0

Does anyone know how to sew? I have this hole in my shorts....the red and white ones...yeah those are the ones!

-
OH WOW a pen.....you wanna sign them for me? yeah right there right along the crack! LOL :*)) :*))
-
I have to call the Pros. I suck at most handyman things.
-
I tend to calls the pros. I am not as handy as I think I am. Also, I know then, that the job will get done quickly

Over the years when various things have gone wrong I have attempted to "have a go" as the Aussies say and try to fix it. Along the way I have been electrocuted , cut badly(arm, from carpet knife), burned, doused in hot cooking oil(trying to fix gas oven), stabbed(with a screwdriver) and I mangled my thumb with a crowbar trying to nail down an errant piece of decking lumber that had popped up from water absorption.
Thank God I have a friend who is a carpenter and a truck toolbox full of every tool imaginable. If he cant do it, I ring up the tradesman.
Electricity is the 1 thing I stay well and truly away from. One simple miscalculation and it's el final
-
Like many I stay away from anything electrical more than a change of a light bulb, but I'll look at plumbing, and fortunately I usually procrastinate enough that I don't have to call the professionals in, my wife does. :*))
-
I'd have to say that I do stay far away from electricity. I'm a electrical idiot.
-
Unless its something I really think is over my head, I'll usually tackle the job myself. I've installed new kitchen cabinets, along with new sink, supply lines, garbage disposal, new drain pipes, and underlayment on the floors. I've also hung ceiling fans, changed outlets, changed light switches, and ran new outlets. I don't do much automotive, usually that goes to the local mechanics, although in college I changed the thermostat and starter on my old stationwagon.
My most impressive home repair was when the wife pulled some paper off the ceiling (a few months before we had the room drywalled). I got tired of looking at the big brown spot overhead and covered it up with posterboard attached with liquid nails O:O
-
I call the professional 100% of the time. I've learned the hard way that my talents are simply not in the areas of carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, or painting. I've made attempts, through the years, but have found that it costs me less to call in the pros from the start, as it usually costs more to undo the problems I've caused.

Depends on how well grounded you are buddy ;)
-
I've been electrocuted a time or six or five, depending on the voltage and amperage it usually just tickles a little.
Could explain a lot about the way I are!!!
:D :px

I am pretty damn handy, I pretty much have done most of the remodels and fix it type things with my houses.
I'm the exact opposite of Marz.....
I call in an electrician to change out light bulbs....
Not that I'm inept....I can do things when I apply myself.....(Hell, I took an auto engine rebuilding course in high school)
it's just that I have NO DESIRE and LITTLE SATISFACTION in doing things myself.
My dad--bless his heart--when I was a kid, his idea of me helping him with home projects was to clean up the mess......no sh**
So my assumption is that it was instilled in me at an early age that home projects are NO FUN AT ALL.
Along those lines, I will not wash my car at home by hand.....always take it to a carwash.
Again, as a kid I remember my dad FORCING ME to help him wash his car at the DAMNEDEST TIMES....like when I was headed out to play with the guys. "NOPE first ya gotta help me wash my car." "AAAHHHH, dad...all the guys are going to the park" "That can wait, son."
OMG, I've got issues ***sigh***

Since I rent, I call the Land lord and let them shell out thier money in costs. Where I work though, I'm usually the one who will try to fix first, before calling in the pro's. I've saved the boss alot of money. In return, when ever I need time off or my schedeul modified, I get it no questions asked.

I'm uselesser than i look when it comes to handy man stuff....
i have to put a new faucet on my kitchen sink, but i do not have any turn off valvues so i have to put them on too, and i also have to remove that same sinks drain pipes, and put them on too... i have the basin wrench, and the tube cutters the pvc pipes, and the new faucet.... but yet i still can't seem to muster up the confidence to do it.

there's alot I don't know, but I always try to figure it out. So far I been lucky, but one of these days I'm gonna probably light up like a X mas tree. So if all of a sudden my replies/post just stop, it means I've become a crispy sly.

I just read an article aobut this guy who lives down in Florida....he will come and do handy man work for ya ...for a big fee....only because he is naked when he does it LOL...it says he is now startign to hire women to come and do your laundry and clean ya house.....what you say guys? Lets hire some women to come clean..
-
It's annoying though, at work, when ever something goes down everyone leaves it for me instead of at least attempting to figure it out. For instance we have two boilers at work. If the back one goes down, there's a simple chart that shows which valves to turn on/off to redirect the hot water. But no, let's shut the showers down for an entire week end and lose hundreds in profit because we're too friggin lazy to turn a lever, or read for that matter.
Sorry bout going off like this, but lazy people really chafe my panties!!! :Xo!
