Title: Detached Retina
Post by: Koaa2 on November 01, 2007, 01:47:14 PM
I have been off the Internet for the past 3 weeks. I had a detached retina 3 weeks ago, with multiple tears to the retina. This is the 2nd one I have had, the other being in the opposite eye.  It has been fixed with laser surgery and a freezing procedure, with a gas bubble put in my eye, with subsequent holding of head to press the retina back in place. It seems to have worked. After surgery you can not do: 1. Exercise 2. Read 3. Use the computer 4. Have sex for 3 weeks.

The symptoms to it are: 1. Flashing in eye.
                                       2. Curtain like object in eye.
                                       3. Blurred vision.
                                       4. Excessive floaters.

If you have it, it has to be treated immideately. Don't delay, it is a medical emergency if you don't want to go blind.

Thought you might want to know. Any others had this?

Sorry to hear about that Koaa!  I know they are painful as my friend had one due to getting hit in the eye with a racquetball without eye guards.  Glad you're doing ok.

Thanks for the support. Certain people are susceptible to it, mainly very near sighted people. As we age the fluid sacks in our eyes tear away from the eye wall. In some people when it tears away it tugs on the retina and tears it off the eye wall or causes tears in it, both lead to the retina coming completely off and to blindness.

A few years ago there was nothing that could be done, that has changed.
