I was just sitting here reading some posts and I came across xnewyawka talking about his 2 month SLY anniversary. I can recall not too long ago when both he and John Mont were our resident "fence-sitters". Then it occurred to me that probably most of us on here were all "on the fence" at some point. For me, I probably sat on the fence for at least a couple of years. But it only took less than a week after stumbling across this site, and after getting alot of encouragement and reassurance from all of my brothers, that I could stand it no longer, and finally took the plunge.
So, all of you out there, what's your story. How long were you on the fence??? Or were you one of those guys/gals that just knew what you wanted and went for it???

I guess you could say that I was sort of a middle ground kind of person in this one. I've been cutting my own hair for years. I was doing it no guard in the summer and two to three guard in the winter. Last summer I took my electric razor to my head. I liked it, but it wasn't smooth. I would say it is lake 12 hours growth no that I'm slick shaving it. When the weather started to get warm this year, I took my Fusion to my head and haven't looked back. For me personally getting it slick was the turning point. Until I I felt it slick, it was just another hairstyle. Now it is a lifestyle. As of the 14th of this month, I've been 6 months sly with many years of sly to go!

slyinkc.....1st of all gr8 post, brah. i've always been curious on shaving my dome. however...it wasn't until approximately january 2007 did i even became serious about headshaving. the used2b thick hair was slowly thinning on top & i knew that in about 4-5 years that it would get worse. so..... with the encouragement of my wifey & couple of friends i finally did the deed on april 24,2007. i discovered the sbg forum probably a month b4 i did the deed & it helped me get off the fence. after being a lurker/visitor i finally registered on this forum in june2007.
so....i guess u can say that i was seriously on the fence since january 2007 & got off the fence on april 24,2007. there is no turning back. i am sly 4 life. O0

9 years 31 weeks 4 days 14 hours 26 minutes and 5 seconds...
And if that were truly correct, I would have changed my SLY display name to BaldRainman...
3 months 3 weeks...etc...etc... >:D
-
I was only on the fence for about a week after I first thought of it. It did take me over a month to do the deed though since I decided to ease into it by gradually doing shorter and shorter buzzes ... also I was waiting for my week and a half vacation from work so I could get used to it. O0
-
Damn, I think I was on the fence for probably 3-4 years...
but that was when not many dudes buzzed if not scraped their heads clean.
I was buzzed or flattoped then, and THAT was pushin' it....
we're talkin' about 13 yrs ago 8)
-
About four years before I actually gave it a try ... almost another two before it became a permanent thing.
-
Sat on the fence on and off a few times. The first time I buzzed it was in 1999 down to a #1. Then I did it again around mid 2k. I buzzed it in 2002 then 2005. I finally buzzed it down to a #0 using the WAHL balding clipper in August eventually taking the plunge about 2 weeks ago to go slick and must admit it's much more easier to maintain than buzzing it.
-
I never really sat on the fence at all. I decided that I wanted to do it one day and have been doing it nearly on a daily basis since. Thanks to all the sly bros in here, I have learned better techniques and products that, had I not come across them, may have affected my desire to stay Sly in the beginning. O0

Mines a bit like Jdog, I needed a haircut and decided on the spot to shave it. Haven't looked back :)
-
I'd been buzzing my head with guard-less clippers for over 20 years. Then one day (in May 2006), I wondered "how would it look shaved?"
Grabbed my razor and went at it.
So I guess I sat on the fence for about 5 seconds or twenty years, depending upon how you look at it.

I've always wondered what I would look like bald, especially given my genetic predisposition to hair loss. I seriously started thinking about it 4 months ago. I knew the tough sell would be my wife. What can I say, she's just always seen me with a decent amount of hair and wasn't sure if it would look good.
Then it hit me.....my wife and I participate in the local Heart Walk (for the past 3 years) so I'll do a head shaving fund raiser. The goal was eventually met and as of this past Saturday I am sly.

See...there's always a way, if you really want it!
Now...how do you tell her you want to STAY bald?
Looks good on ya bro! O0

Thanks! I think so too. My wife was initially shocked, but it seems to be growing on here. She even commented to a friend that she thinks I want to keep it longer and didn't seem upset about that. We'll see how it goes....

Yeh ... does look very good on you BalDoug!
In my case, as I lost more hair on top I just kept buzzing it shorter & shorter at the sides ...
but it was pretty rare back then. Actually I remember, probably about 1987 or thereabouts I was at work one day, listening to the radio .... I'd been feeling pretty miserable about my ever more thinning hair ... & there was this guy being interviewed, I can't remember who he was, but seem to remember that he was an author. Anyway, the interviewer asked him why he had shaved his head completely bald & he replied that he'd been in the advanced stages of mpb & he simply, one day, got fed up of feeling like a victim all the time & took a razor to his remaining hair, he'd been completely shaved ever since & a lot happier for it as he no longer felt like a victim, & had found it to be (as we all know) a very empowering act. He also said that when he first did it it was so unusual that he used to frequently hear little kids saying to their mums "mummy, that man's got no hair!" & he could almost see them shrinking away from him! However, even back in 1987 it was becoming a bit more common place so those comments had become less frequent. I remember totally relating to what he said about the feeling like a victim bit (I was in my mid twenties then) & although I didn't shave it all off for another few years the seed had certainly been planted. Wish I could remember who the guy actually was!

I guess for me it was about a year and a half from when I thought "I'd really like to try shaving it" to actually doing it . Hey; that's not so bad for a fence-sitter like me, is it?

Year and a half, huh, John??? It was actually longer than that for me, except it only took about a week after I showed up on SBG's. It just seemed longer with you since you posted here for a long time before taking the plunge. But glad we both finally made it!!! O0

I can remember back when I was on the fence and I'd see a sly guy on TV or out in public somewhere and I'd just wonder (borderline obsess over) what it would be like to just ditch all of my hair. For the longest time, I didn't think I'd ever be able to do it. Now I look back and wonder what the big deal was.

Same here, Razor. It all seems so silly now...the things we worried about back then... :/O

yeah; I was in here for a relatively long time before taking the plunge. In retrospect; the 'fence' period in here was agonizing; but what a pleasure it was when I finally went sly !
-
I was on the fence for 15 months, i thought about shaving my head in march of 2003, i didnt do it until june of 2004
-
I can honestly say that I did not sit on the fence. I decided one day that I wanted to shave my head, and a few hours later the deed had been done. :)
-
On the fence her for 2-3 years and then I did it.
-
I've been some 20 yrs in the fence. Thinked abut shaving since the mid-80s and had some short crops sometimes, but first full smooth shave was early 2002. Now, a regular headshaver. Should have started a loooong time ago.
-
I wore my hair since 1992 short cut with clippers, mm for mm less, till #1 this year. Since March 07 I sat on the fence (clipper without guard), shaved once in May and did the deed really in August (7th). Now I'm nearly three month regular headshaver.

I was on the fence for a couple of years. After I found this site, I went sly in about 20 days. A wonderful decision.

Yes, Steve, Isn't it amazing how just the influence of the guys here on this site helped to make it soo much easier. That's why I think being part of this forum is so great. Hopefully, we can make other guys tranition to SLY just a little bit easier.
-
I wasn't on the fence that long maybe 3 days at the most. If it wasn't for this site i may still be on the fence.
-
Not really a fence sitter here. After I had my hair cut short I buzzed it for a few years. My wife was fussing about the "little hairs" all over the sink. So one night after shaving my face in the shower I covered my head in shaving cream and went to it. "I'll show her" I thought. At first she said "What did you do?" I told her I baked cookies - what did it look like. It was really funny.
-
still on the fence... have been thinking about it and have even buzzed it very short on two occasions since Jan of 2006 or so. My hangups are dating, sunburn and work.
it is a tight look though so i am considering how to introduce myself at work as all of sudden a sly guy you know?
-
Hello Uncola, welcome here.
One solution is: Do it step by step. Use a clipper and cut #5, #4, #3 ...., without guard, week by week or just how you want and once jump over the fence and do the deed.
And when you don't like it, let the hair grow again. It is a way, which works. Read the threads.
Enjoy hanging on the forum.

It was a few years of doing the clipper deal, going down to the #0 . I said for years that I would just shave it all off if got worse, well I had enough of it getting worse, so Iwent for it, it sure as hell wasn't getting any better :*)). Now I kick myself for not doing it sooner.

I think a lot of guys will tell you that reactions from work are usually non-existent. I've heard a few stories where guys have thought that they would get a lot of reaction from people at work and at the end of the day, there was maybe one. So, I wouldn't worry about work at all.
In regards to dating, anything that boosts your confidence is going to boost your dating.
Suncreen = no sunburn.

Welcome, RC. You just need to do it if you've thought about it that much. I know from experience, your fears are way overblown.....And you'll love it!!!!
-
Tyler said it right, you probably won't get any comments at work--maybe a compliment or two. Sounds like you could lather and shave this weekend. Why not start December Sly, you won't regret it at all.

I remember always wanting to be completely bald since seeing Yul Brynner on TV in the early 60s. Then Came Telly Savalas. I always thought a slick head just looked and seemed so damn sharp. I grew up wearing short hair and crewcuts and when I went into the Army, I use to just go into the barber weekely and get peeled with no guard. Finally, after having been to the field for months on end, I stood in frnt of the mirror in 1983( aftr coming back from the field and on vacation) and thoughtt to myself that this is the moment. Had been to the barber several days early. I washed my stubble to get it softened up, got out the shave creme and went slick against the grain. I remember wiping the shave crme off my bald head and thinking that a daily head shave was now part of my new daily routine as a permanently bald man.

Welcome Uncola...
dating...no problem you only WANT girls that understand a dude that wants a bald head...
sunburn...use sunscreen or a hat (but why cover up perfection)...
work.....
dude, come up with a 'sucker bet" and make sure you end up being the sucker..
tell whoever you bet with you'll shave your head slick and smooth if you loose..
rig it and show up to work clean as a baby's butt!
Just make sure you for sure will lose!
Believe me if you dig the bald look and have been thinking about it, you wont be satisfied until you don't have a single hair on your head...that includes stubble bro!
Make the bet and go enjoy your new life brutha...it's waitin' for ya! O0

Wow, I never saw this topic. I never sat on the fence (don't like things poking my ass) but I usually make a decision and just do it. When I was thinning and people commented about it I would say, one day I will come in completely bald.... and that day has came and went! :)
As I originally posted I did not realize that my hair bothered me until I shaved it... guess it was denial??
But I thought about shaving, had questions, found this site that day, asked questions, got answers, and shaved shortly after that... did the taper down effect!

I sat there for about two seconds..... of course with my MPB it really wasn't a big decision.

RC:
I was on the fence about six months. That ended 2.5 months ago. During that fence time, I had my barber keep going shorter and shorter until we both knew the slick dome was the next step. It's amazing how losing that last 1/8-inch of hair was all that kept me from jumping to the SLY side of the fence.
Now look at me, I'm dishing out advice like a SLY veteran.
Keep reading the posts here if you're interested in giving it a shot. The rush of self-esteem (OK, and a little anxiety) most of us experienced when we finally did it was awesome.

The only reason I was on the fence that long was because I wanted to be sure that the lovely Mrs.Koz was OK with the decision to go SLY. She has an Uncle and a Cousin who are SLY so she said "DO IT!". O0

What you mean HOW LONG was I stuck on the fence....hell my ass is still hung up on the damn fence post! LOL
Timmmayyyyyyyyyy!
