Title: Pizza!!!
Post by: jusbnme on September 23, 2007, 08:34:06 PM
Ok, I know this may be a corny topic but I had to ask after mentioning it on another thread.  To the other sly bros that like pizza as much as I do, if any are out there, what kind do you prefer?  Also, where do you usually order it from, or go to get it from?

As a rule, we usually eat alot of Pizza Hut, cause it's good and they deliver or are just close by. But the best pizza usually comes from local places.  My favorite in our area is a local chain called Minsky's.  One slice of their pizza is a meal.  And my oh my......good stuff O0

I here you bro.  We do the usual mainstream ones most the time like Domino's but the best in my opinion comes from a local place near me called "Anna's Pizza."  Man that is some good stuff.

Chicago and Northern Illinois is filled with great pizza places.  Most of the truly great ones are independently owned and not chains.  My personal favorites are a bar-b-que beef pizza and a sauerkraut and canadian bacon pizza. (yeah, I said sauerkraut, actually doesn't taste like the stuff)    Yumm

yeah.... me & wifey do pizza once a week.  the mainstream pizza that we order is PIZZA HUT.  as far as national chains...they  r  the best.  right now we  r  hooked with their dipping pizza w/ the marinara sauce.  however.... the best local joint in beautiful pensacola is probably the tuscan oven. `dr**l   that is some good stuff right there. My wife is from Iowa and everyone up there eats canadian bacon and sauerkraut pizza.  The first time I had it...took some getting used to.  But it really is good.  Even found some local places around here that do sauerkraut as a ingrediant on their menus.

Something about sauerkraut on pizza just sounds plain wrong to me.  But bear in mind that I hate sauerkraut.   And I haven't had pizza of any kind in a very long time.

We have five pizza shops within 4 blocks of my house, none are national chains. We just ordered a pizza today. My favorite is from Wedgewood Pizza. Got their everything pizza. I still haven't what all "everything" is yet, but they pile it on.

Not much of a national pizza food chain eater here.  We have one local place here called Bill Bobe's Pizzareia.  We go there every friday night. Always order their Faroke Pizza...its a Loaded Pizza wiht three different cheeses, two different sausages, beef, pepperoni, tomatoes, mushrooms, black olives, green peppers and home made pizza sauce.  We always also order their deep fried Portabella mushrooms with the ranch dipping sauce. Now there is some good eatin.

Lance, good topic!  If there's one thing I miss from back in NY, it's the pizza!. We had the best pies in Staten Island and Brooklyn. Two of my favorites in SI were Ciro's and Il Pomodoro. There are also many more that I have had that are also good. If you ever get to NY, try to get to Good Fella's in SI, they've won awards.   O0

Brooklyn has quite  a few, but one which I remember really standing out is L&B Spumoni Garden, unbelievably great pizza, and a standout was their square slice. My mouth waters just thinking of it.

I don't think I'm going to find anything near as close out here in AZ. As far as chains go, they do have Pizza Hut, and California Pizza Kitchen (which is not bad ), and Domino's as well.

And Paul, that canadian bacon and sauerkraut pie sounds real good! I love sauerkraut. Never heard of it before tho'.

Well, I have to say one thing. I love italian pizza. I had a substitute teacher come in for a couple weeks at school, and one day he brought in a portable oven, and let us all make italian pizza. The crust was thin and crispy, but fluffy on the inside, and it bursted with flavor in your mouth. It had sausage slices on top that looked like pepperoni, grilled chicken, roasted red pepper & monterey jack cheese backed right in the crust with a garlic and pesto spread mixed with tomato sauce and tomato paste for the top of the dough, and also it had some grilled eggplant and some other stuff on top I cant remember. It was back when I was in grade 7. I never have found a place that topped that pizza, although, a local place I love to go for my pizza is Gino's. I love their chicken pizza.

In my Sr. year in high school (and summer after freshmen year in college), I worked in a pizza restaurant. I would actually make the pizzas, including working the oven. The burns on the forearms stopped me from returning after my sophomore year (they're finally starting to go away). Some of the stuff I liked on pizzas included linguica, white onions, mushrooms. Plus, thick crust is the only way to enjoy pizza (sorry you NYers, thin crust sucks).

We have a local place called Cool River Pizza. Reminds me a lot of what we made at that restaurant I worked at. There are two in our city. It's great pizza and the owners are very active in the community (coupons to students with good grades, attendance, etc.). Plus, the prices are reasonable, and they have great beers on tap.

We probably go there a couple of times a month.

I've lost track of how many pizza joints my son has worked at from high school through college. He has made them, served them and delivered them. He got a job delivering pizza in Toledo when he was in college there. Second day on the job he got robbed at gun point. He said he would never deliver again. Well, he is at Kent State now, making pizza and delivering them as well. He says it's a safer town. Actually, it's the good tips he gets. The drunks tip him really well.

As far as national chains go, Papa Johns is the best in my opinion. They include a little container of garlic butter sauce for dipping and a few pickled hot peppers with every pie!

My favorite local joint in my hometown is called Myles Pizza pub. Great Chicago style thick crust pies that are piled about 1/2 inch thick with cheese.

I agree with Joe. Nowhere on earth have I been to that has a good a pizza as NYC. Even the smallest hole in the wall pizzeria serves a slice that God himself must've had a hand in making.I remember going to a few on upper east side Manhattan and every night for 10 days I'd go to this little pizzeria and get 2 pepperoni&mushroom slices with a bottle of Peach Snapple for 6bucks.

Heaven!

Think you would get quite an argument from the Chicago contingent on that one JDog.  :Xo! Hell, New Yorkers don't even know how to cut a pizza properly.  It needs to be cut in squares not giant slices.  :(    Guess it all depends on what you are used to

I am not a fan of chains. I will eat at Pizza Hut however it's rare I think there are only 2 in nova scotia. We have a chain and I think it's only in eastren canada called Greco, I call it GreaseCO cause man that pizza is greasy.

I personally prefer small local joints. The town i am currently living in has a pizza Joint Called "Sam's" they have a greek based pizza, the sauce is a brownish colour, and has a spice to it, it's great best pizza i've ever had. If you ever find yoursend in New Glasgow you have to try this pizza.

My home town has 2 places Called Jake's and Jake's and Son's  any way they havea classic canadian pizza it has ground beef, canadian bacon, mushrooms, peperoni and basically this pizza has a sweet paste rubbed onto the dough before they put on the regular pizza sauce and toppings, the's a nice pie.

There are a couple of local places that have great pizza. One is Dion's, hand-tossed in front of you and they started out in one little store. Now they have a few throughout town and around Albuquerque too.  Another great place and they only have on location, is Pizza Castle. My mouth is watering just thinking about those two!

Went to a great Pizza place in Highlands NC once.  It was a combination Pizza / Video Rental place.  They had several private dining rooms in the back where you could go and watch a movie of your choice, while dining on your pizza.

I personally love Pizza Hut - Cheese Lover's w/Sausage, Mushrooms, & Bacon... yum... but I really enjoy making pizza from scratch - the sauce, the crust, dicing all the toppings up, etc.  However, since it's so time consuming I usually only make them about twice a year... usually for Super Bowl Sunday and then during UK's basketball season for the UK-Louisville game.  As far as a local place, my fave is in Russellville KY called Sylfoni's - thick crust, cut in square's, with the works, fantastic and been in the same location for 40 years.

On a side note, I love Pizza Hut's buffalo wings w/ranch.  Good topic Lance!

I'm love Sperino's from my hometown and Topper's which started nearby, but is growing huge in the Midwest...they give a 50% discount to military(even me, retired Navy).

I was surprised at how good Domino's has improved...after I got a coupon for a free pizza there, I tried it and was actually impressed.  Actually prefer it over the standard Pizza Hut order in my family.

I haven't had Domino's in decades because it was so bad. Papa John's and Pizza Hut are ok for chains.

But for amazing pizza in Baltimore MD, it's Greek Village. I don't know for sure because I have never knowingly tried it but I think they sprinkle cocaine on it because it is so addicting. Lot's of delicious sauce, tons of fresh cheese, and a bakery quality crust that can't be beat.

Prices are beyond reasonable (I don't think they have ever gone up in the decades I've been going there) and I think the gyro's come with cocaine too  ;). Actually, they may sprinkle it on all their food :D

In my little one-horse town, there are two pizza places.

Dominos, which serves THE most disgusting pizza you could ever possibly imagine. The other is PizzaExpress which is a national chain, although a little more 'high end' than somewhere like Pizza Hut would be. We dont have any 'local' or 'mom and pop' type pizza places.

http://www.pizzaexpress.com/

PizzaExpress opened a few locations in California a few years ago but I dont think the natives ever took to eating pizza with a knife and fork the way we do here :D The locations shut down after a year or so.

My favourite pizza: the thinnest base imaginable (sorry, Chicago dish pizza or whatever its called really sucks IMO), tomato, lots of mozzarella, roquito peppers, rocket (roquette?) and corn (yes, many of us international weirdos like corn on our pizza).

We dont have Papa John's or Little Caesars (?) or anywhere like that. We have Pizza Hut, but my nearest location is around 25 miles away and I'm never that desperate...
Title: Re: Pizza!!!

Translating: rocket / roquette equals arrugula in American English. It's really good in tomato sauces. I've never had it on pizza, though.

I'm OK with the chain pizza places.  But I don't eat much pizza on my own as we frequently get free pizza bought for us by sales reps at the carpet store I work at.  They usualy buy it from two independents here in Seattle.  One is called Luciano's (can you go wrong with a name like that?).  The other is called Stellar Pizza.  They are both quite stellar!

I have always liked veggie pizzas. Since beginning a plant based diet a month or so ago they have become even better for me. The only downside, at this point, is the cheese but what the hell is a pizza without cheese?
Pizza is the perfect food, it has everything I need. Crust, sauce, cheese, and grease.....the 4 basic food groups.
Lately I've been getting the take and bakes from Papa Murphy's. They load them up with veggies (cheese, too). Cheaper than baked pizza and better than most. My second favorite is Domino's Brooklyn Cheese Pizza. They cut the slices big and it's baked for folding. Mmmmmmm!

I love pizza. I try to avoid the national chains and buy from small local shops. Recently I've been making my own  from scratch and it's awesome. I was using an aluminum pizza pan but switched to a pizza stone and there it's a world of difference with the crust.

I like plain, onions and mushroom, pepperoni, garlic, most any but no anchovies.

I went to Pizza Hut for lunch today. It sucked.

I ordered garlic bread with mozzarella (which was ok), but the pizza itself was grotesque. The base was almost completely raw on the bottom, and the toppings were undercooked. I sent it back, the waitress (serveperson  ::)) brought me another one, and it was the same.

Eww.

And 2 pieces of garlic bread, the undercooked pizza and a diet pepsi (eww, I'm a coke man) cost me £22.00, which is like $30 of your greenback dollars.

I was hungry, and it was either Pizza Hut or somewhere called Quizno Subs which I'd never heard of before.

Up here in the northwoods the chains score successes over the local joints simply because of price, IMO. At Papa Murphy's I can score a huge family size pizza for about half of what the locals charge for a pizza that is 2 or 3 inches smaller. Same with Domino's. Our local Pizza Hut was recently struck by "lightning" but I was never a fan even before that.

Don't you have any locally owned places rather than Franchise Food Joints?  They may charge a little more, but it's real food, made fresh and many times without strange ingredients with names that sound like industrial plastics.

I don't think I've ever seen a non-franchise pizza place in the UK. Not saying that there aren't any, just that I haven't seen them.  The chains seem to have a griphold on the market.

When I've been to the UK the absolute last thing I'd look or ask for is pizza or hamburger.  It would also be the last thing in Italy for that matter--pizza, a la franchise, is truly an American food.  I've never seen pepperoni in Italy either, sopressata--yes, pepperoni--no, I think that's another American thing.
Title: Re: Pizza!!!
Post by: Chavster on October 01, 2011, 10:36:27 AM
There probably are a handful of non-franchise/chain places in the UK (to serve 65 million people...), although I've never seen one, but generally speaking, if you want pizza, you go to either Pizza Hut or Pizza Express.

Other than that, people buy frozen ones which you throw into the oven. Or worse, frozen ones you throw into the microwave oven.

*X man vomit smiley*

However - I must add that the only place in America I ate pizza and actually enjoyed it was in New York. When I lived in Omaha, there was a place called (I think) Romeos which served fairly decent pizza, but the only place that I found 'good' pizza was in NYC. Chicago pizza (which is like a thick frisbee) totally 100% SUCKS.

When I've been to the UK the absolute last thing I'd look or ask for is pizza or hamburger.

It depends on the circumstances. If you've been traveling all day and it's getting late and you need a quick meal, you'll take what's available.

That sounds a bit like Tom's airline days :D :D :D :D

But yes I agree. If I'm going to eat a hamburger in the UK (or really anywhere), I'd eat it at McDonalds. Here at least, everywhere else makes it with even worse mystery meat than McDonalds does.

And if none of you have ever sampled the UK's other 'delicacy' - a kebab - you really should. Its a big hunk of 'lamb' (mystery meat) on a massive skewer that turns in front of a flame for about 400 hours. At the end of the evening, they throw it in the fridge, and then take it out the next day and throw it in front of the flame again, and it goes on like that until the whole thing has been purchased.

They slice it thinly and put it inside pita bread with peppers and onions and stuff like that.

Eww.

A typical 'classy' night out for the average English person: go the the pub and drink 50 pints of warm beer, then go for a kebab, then puke, then have some more to drink. Nice.

When I've been to the UK the absolute last thing I'd look or ask for is pizza or hamburger.

It depends on the circumstances. If you've been traveling all day and it's getting late and you need a quick meal, you'll take what's available.
Bad food=no food for me--I can't stand to "have" to eat junk, prefer to go to bed hungry, I've got a little extra weight to see me through, unfortunately.  When in the UK, I'll find an Indian restaurant--but I also like fish and chips, but it's harder and harder to find the good stuff.

I remember stopping at a Pizza Hut in Surrey after getting off the intercity train from Edinburgh.  It was about 11 pm and I was starving and getting a proper meal was out of the question.

And if none of you have ever sampled the UK's other 'delicacy' - a kebab - you really should. Its a big hunk of 'lamb' (mystery meat) on a massive skewer that turns in front of a flame for about 400 hours. Over here we call that "Gyros" (pronounced Year-ohs). Commonly served in restaurants that specialize in Greek cuisine.

They call that gyro here--we've got one in the office building food court.  The "meat" is made someplace around Chicago and sold all over the place.  I  kind of like it, provided the tazziki sauce is good, they put a healthy dose of goat cheese on it and they use Greek style, rather than California style, olives.  Lots of onions please.

At that time of night, Pizza Hut would be one of the only places still open. Even most McDonald's locations close at 11pm.

tzatziki--thanks, I'm obviously not Greek, but their food is good.   :)
Gyro is not a "hero", it's the sliced lamb meat mixture you called kebab, although kebabs here in middle eastern restaurants are rarely ground or processed meats.  It's served sliced from the broiler device on a pita with the "fixings".  Heros--are long sandwiches on a French bread large baguette style roll.  They're called "po' boys" in New Orleans, and are known as subs and hoagies in other areas.  Baked ziti, is a tube style pasta, http://www.barillaus.com/Products/53/ziti.aspx and I'm sure it's available in the UK.  Google, ziti receipes.

However - I must add that the only place in America I ate pizza and actually enjoyed it was in New York.

There is a pizza shop in NYC right near Madison Square Garden that has out of this world pizza. We actually found it by asking a NYPD officer who was out in front of the garden. And to think all along we thought they were only the doughnut experts.... lol

On the other hand, po' boys can be hot or cold.  Fried oyster, shrimp, soft shelled crab, fried catfish, hot roast beef, hot--i.e.spicy-- sausage, slow roasted duck, etc.--all are hot.  There are cold cut varieties too.  Then there is the supposed original po' boy, French fried potatoes on a loaf with roast beef gravy, tomatoes, pickles and mayonaise--they were served to the "poor boys" on the picket lines in a transit strike in N.O. in the 20's or 30's by the strikers' supporters.

Oh, re hero/gyro. The kebabs here are revolting so I think I'll avoid gyros too. Eww.

As for Ziti, it looks like macaroni to me.

Its interesting you posted a link to the Barilla website, because the UK is one of the few countries where Barilla doesnt peddle its goods. I emailed them a couple of days ago to find out why but they havent responded yet. I'm assuming its because they'd have to charge twice as much here, and because everyone here is already used to eating pasta that tastes like cardboard. IMO, its the best commercially produced pasta in the world, but its as rare as hen's teeth here. When I go over to France to go shopping, which I'll be doing just before Christmas, I always buy boxes and boxes of Barilla. The customs people at the entrance to the channel tunnel always look at me like :o because most people fill their cars with wine, but me being odd, I'm an international pasta smuggler.

The last time I came back from France, the customs woman asked me what I had in the car. "Pasta" I said. She looked at me like I was peeing on her, and she didnt believe me, so she made me get out of the car while her and her buddies emptied my car out completely. Morons.

Back in the day I stopped at a lunchonette in Birmingham and the waitress told me that the special was a oyster po'boy. I didn't know what the heck she was talking about so I ordered a club sandwich and she didn't know what the heck I was talking about. It was hysterical.

Subs / hoagies / heros can also be hot, e.g., a meatball sub. As for baked ziti, I never had it until I moved the the NYC area. Here it's a common school lunch or party dish. It's tube-shaped pasta with tomato sauce, ricotta and mozzarella baked into a dense concoction.

If they eat lasagne they are probably eating ricotta as one of the cheeses.  It's more an "ingredient" cheese--I don't know anyone who would eat it unless it's been made part of something else, like the stuffing for cannoli--http://sweets.seriouseats.com/2010/10/making-cannoli-from-scratch-italian-pastry-ricotta-recipe.html,

Lasagne here isnt made with ricotta. There is one supermarket that sells ricotta, but not in any great quantity. Lasagne here is usually made with a combination of mozzarella and cheddar, but even more commonly, people buy it ready made and throw it in the microwave.

What can you do, its the most popular cheese in the UK. When people think of cheese, they usually think of cheddar. I have a friend who couldnt eat cheese if his life depended on it, becuase when he was a boy, his mother gave him cheddar, and he hated it. But because of that, he cant (wont) eat ANY cheese, because he thinks all cheese will taste like cheddar. I've even taken a ball of fresh mozzarella and held it next to a chunk of fresh parmesan, and I've tried to say 'look you idiot, they're both cheeses, they dont look the same or taste the same or feel the same', but he would rather die than eat them.

Cheddar is my favourite cheese though. I'm not keen on the other British cheeses, like Cheshire or Wensleydale etc. I like Camembert if its been cooked, but I hate Brie, and I've never yet found an Italian cheese I like.

I love cheese, but here's one I wouldnt touch with someone else's...

Might be interesting, but I'd want to eat it in a Sardinian restaurant with a Michelin star or two--just to be sure I was getting the "good" stuff.
My Mother's family being Scandinavian were fond of things some might find unusual like gamla ost or old cheese.  Sort of like limburger on steroids. I like it now but I'd run from the room as a child.
I really like the Italian blue cheese gorgonzola, and the variety gorgonzola dolce is great with fruit after dinner if it's been allowed to ripen and get nice and runny.  Also every variety of goat cheese I have tried has worked for me, but I know people who find it too "distinctive" a taste.

Well if you saw what my diet consists of, you'd be surprised, even knowing how fussy I am.

I basically live on bread (which I make myself because bread here is like eating candy floss (cotton candy)), cheese, salad, corn on the cob, potatoes, onions, carrots, and pasta.

I eat beef and chicken once in a very blue moon, but I dont eat fish, lamb, pork, or any other animal/meat. I can maybe handle bacon once in a while (which I know is pork!) but thats very rare too.

Drinks wise, I'm a diet coke kind of guy. I dont do tea and I dont do coffee. I do do whisky, wine, vodka and beer though :) although not in the same glass.

I dont eat eggs, but arent American club sandwiches made with hard boiled eggs too?

In any case, you buy a sandwich in the UK, and its two slices of bread and you need a microscope to see the filling. A few years ago, in the 80s, Selfridges (department store) opened a little restaurant in their food hall, and the sign above the door said 'OVERSTUFFED AMERICAN SANDWICHES', and my mother actually complained to the restaurant manager, because it was literally two slices of (cheap) bread and one slice of pastrami and a slice of dill pickle.

Harrods has one purpose in life. To screw as much money out of American and Japanese tourists as possible, and they've turned it into an art form, far more so than any other company. I have no idea what people see in the place. Its filled with overpriced crap that not a single person on the planet could ever possibly want, and that includes a $60 sandwich bill.

I cant bear the thought of tourists coming to the UK and thinking 'OMG OMG OMG we absolutely MUST go to Harrods because its just so quaint and Lady Di used to go there all the time!!!!!'.

Its a department store stocked with crap. More crap than any other department store, and they're all stocked with crap. And its such horribly overpriced crap.

But if ever anyone wants to see 50000000 American tourists buying chocolate covered quail eggs filled with duck liver pate, all wearing plaid trousers and beige raincoats made by London Fog (because obviously, everyone in the UK wears a raincoat  ::) and because obviously, its always foggy in London  ::)), then Harrods is the place to go.

My father used to work for Harrods.

Yup, thats what it is, along with Buckingham Palace, Madame Tussauds and several other places. Harrods now opens its Christmas decorations department in July so that Marge and Herbert Egelberger from Des Moines can buy themselves a nice $400 bauble to put on their Christmas tree in December, when they visit London, England on their once-in-a-lifetime summer vacation.

(and why is it always London England, and not just London? I know there's a London in Canada and a London in Kentucky, but even if most Americans are talking about Khartoum or Ras al Khaimah, its never JUST Khartoum or Ras al Khaimah, its Khartoum Sudan and Ras al Khaimah United Arab Emirates. What, like there's a Ras al Khaimah in Utah too?)

When I go to America, I'm very happy to buy myself a pair of $5 socks when I'm in Macys, and because I have a UK passport, I get a further 11% off :D Or even better, the same socks in Walmart for $2.98 without an 11% discount :D

Oh please, you're richer than God :D

You probably jumped in a cab after you finished your sandwiches and went to Buckingham Palace to buy a $50 postcard.

Don't hold back now, let it all out. It will do you a lot of good....LOL.

Yup, thats what it is, along with Buckingham Palace, Madame Tussauds and several other places. OK I'll bite. Why does a UK passport get you an 11% discount in Macy's.?

I was wondering the same thing.  Maybe he's buying in a state that has sales tax on clothes and is entitled to a refund? But that wouldn't come to 11%.   ???

Er, actually...

It varies by country and product, but it's from about 15% - 25%. And a royal pain.
