Title: Why do you live where you do?
Post by: Razor X on September 23, 2007, 06:59:36 PM
The "where are you from" question has popped up quite a few times but we haven't heard a whole lot of why people are where they currently live.

I'll go first.  There's not much to it.  I've lived most of my life in South Jersey.  My immediate family is close by and it's a convenient commute to and from work.  It's too congested for my liking and the property taxes are too damn high, but I haven't had any compelling reason to go find somewhere else to live.   How about the rest of you?

Because I am underage and it is hard for my dad to convince my mom of the moving to the states lol :*)) If i could move to the states, it would definately be where it does not snow. One thing mother nature created to torchure people a few months out of each year :Xo!

After trying to get benefits in Illinois for my disabled brother...Wisconsin just suits his situation better...and it is easier on my girlfriend.  Plan on moving to Arizona or Nevada in a couple of years anyway, after I retire from the Navy.

Moved to the KC area from Springfield, MO after college for a job.  Then met my wife, who is from central Iowa.  So now we are basically half way in-between both sides of the family and it's hard to move one direction or the other.

Lived here my whole life.  Just about all my family from both my side and my wife's are here.  Plus my wife has a good job in the local school system.  I, myself have often thought of moving just for something different.  But all in all there is no real reason to make a move.  Retirement though...That's a different story all together.  Who knows?

I live in Birmingham, Alabama.

I'm with PBurk.  I am where I am because my wife has deep roots and doesn't want to leave.  Now we both have jobs we would like to retire from so that sealed the deal...

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I moved here for the dot com riches, which never happened.  Instead I found the love of my life.  She's also deeply rooted here, so I don't think we'll be leaving anytime soon.  Good thing is that my hometown is only 4 hours away.

I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia simply because I'm going to college. When I have the money I'll move back out to the "country"

Nova Scotia has my heart and home and I can't picture living anywhere else.

I grew up near the ocean, and now my apartment is only a 15 minute walk from the shipping dockyards, the last breath I take is going to be salty I tell yah boy!

I live in Gods Country....Sydney Australia. It is so beautiful here, I live across the road from one of the best beaches in this country! But still close to the city and not far from the country.

Northern Beaches has a really chilled atmosphere but still a busy city - lots to do and see! I love it.

If I were going to live anyplace else it would be Ohio (cant get anymore opposite of Sydney).....family is super important! Maybe one day!

I'm sure you are all aware of why I am where I am. Met my wife on the internet almost 8 years ago and what originally involved her coming to Canada with a girlfriend which fell apart(they waited too long to get the visa) evolved into me making the journey down under, broke,at 19 years of age. 8 years later, married with a little boy,Life has been good to both of us.

I still miss Ohio a lot. My heart is in both places.

Come on out to AZ, Arnie, I think you'd love it here.

Moving West was always something my wife and I wanted to do. I had wanted to move to Cali originally, especially Southern CA. We went to Laguna Beach for our honeymoon.
Coming from NY, it was the total opposite of how I grew up and what I was used to.

We took a trip out to AZ about 6 1/2 years ago, (my daughter was only 7 mos. old) and we really liked it. We tossed around the idea of maybe moving out one day. To make a long story short, I lost my job in July (we knew it was coming since April, tho) and we both decided now is the time to do it. So as of July 9th, I'm a  resident of AZ.
I figure I'm close enough to Cali now, lol.

I was born in Tacoma, WA.  But I have lived in Western Washington all my life in Tacoma, Seattle and Bellingham.  But all close relatives live here.  Plus for being not too far from Downtown Seattle, I have really cheap rent and a short commute.  But if things were different, I wouldn't mind living in Vancouver, BC since I used to live a short distance from there.  I wouldn't mind trying a stint in Alaska either.  I also love Northern Idaho.

Wisconsin just looks and feels right to me.  My parents live on the West coast (as did I for many years), but I much prefer it here.

I was born and raised here.  Only ventured outside this little community once to anohter town about an hour away and hated it.  So we moved back here.  Washington Indiana..not much to offer...but a really good place to raise kids.....small hometown atmosphere wiht the road side fruit stands and such.

East coaster here. I am nestled in the heart of the mountains of southwest VA. Moved here to be closer to my then girlfriend (eventual fiance and now wife) whilst she was in college. After she graduated, we just never thought to move anywhere else. We love it here though. When we go to visit out folks we miss the mountain scenery.

I've lived here in the KC area for over 20 years.  In that time I've been on both sides of the KS/MO state line and and in 6 different towns within the metro.  It's a nice town and has alot of the perks of larger cities and some of the charm of a small midwestern town.  For now, it's home.

After 40 Boston winters, I decided I didn't want a 41st!

Central Texas suits me just fine!

I came here in 97 with the Navy and fell in love with the area... good people and halfway between Chicago and Milwaukee!  Yeah, the winters suck, but the rest of the seasons are perfect!

I guess in my posting of one liners, I didn't really answer the question of this thread.....I was born in Oakland, CA and grew up in Alameda (just west of there). The Lovely Mrs. Schro grew up in Danville (east of Oakland). We lived in the Danville/San Ramon area until June of 2000. After becoming parents, it was evident she was not into maintaining a career other than being a "domestic goddess". So, I started looking at the Sacramento area for a new place to live. We found Rocklin to be a great area to call home. Great weather, awesome schools, and great golf. Bought a 3,200 SF home for $105 per sq. foot in June of 2000 (can't touch that in the SF Bay Area). It would take a tremendous job offer or radical change in lifestyle for us to leave Rocklin.

We'll likely retire to Oregon. We bought a small piece of land off Klamath Lake and are looking at home building companies (log cabins....don't laugh, they are incredible) for ideas. The variety of things you can do up there are awesome...skiing, fishing, golf, wineries, hiking, etc.

I got sick of Cali, lived there all my life. Needed a change insceanery and we would come to WA a couple time a year and really fell in love with it.

So we moved and now I live about 5 blocks from the Puget Sound and a nice little downtown. I can hear the ferry horns from my back porch and I am about 15 mins from downtown Seattle.
