Title: Newbie Question
Post by: METAPHOR on September 19, 2007, 09:15:52 AM
I like what I’ve been reading here. Good stuff, very uplifting and positive.
Got my first buzz-cut (with a #3) a couple of weeks back. It was a bit of a shock and I still
don’t know if it’s for me or not. My fiancé’ gave it good reviews and seems to enjoy rubbing her hands across the stubble. Not sure how she would feel about it completely clean...
I was hoping that cutting it really short would free me from constantly fretting over it.
Unfortunately, I still find myself dwelling on it far too often.
I have a good deal of hair yet but I am just sick of it’s control over me.
Does going sly free really free you from all the stupid anxiety?
Thanks!

OK I will be the first to say it...Bro...dude...you look so much better wiht shorter hair. At least from what I can see.

Going completely sly builds your confidence up I know that much.  I would suggest keeping it at the level 3 for a while see how you like and each time go one more shorter...maybe #2 next time.  Eventually you will get down to a one or none at all...then you can take it from there.  I had a full head of hair too...but me growing hair back?? no way..im sly for life...THIS IS ME!

metaphor... hell yes it does.  so.... just take the plunge & do the deed!  i promise u that u will luv it & that u will not go back.  just take a quality razor (fusion, mach3, hb) & make it smooth.  give it a 30 day trial...just 2 c if u like it.  the 30 day trial is the "unwritten rule" when one goes sly.  almost always....after 30 days the new sly person will have a decision 2 either keep the hair or continue 2 shaving the dome.  i say go 4 it.  the more u wait then the more that u r delaying yourself 2 freedom.

Buzz looks much better man.  And to answer your questions: yes, it does free you from the "hair anxiety."  That's not to say there isn't any maintenance involved (you have to shave it every day, or every other day) but when you factor in not combing it, not going to a hair stylist for a cut, and the fact that you already shave your face you do end up saving a great deal of time.  And no problems on a windy/rainy day.  I also can grow a full head of hair, but not again in this lifetime.  I am hooked.

Give it a go ... you'll never know until you try, and I assure you once you try it - going back to hair will be something I doubt you will want.

Good luck  O0

Metaphor, welcome to SBG's! Glad you found us.

I think you already have some things in your favor.
First, you say your fiancee' approves of the buzz and loves the feel, that's a big plus. Now you can keep buzzing it lower, maybe to a # 2 blended/faded into a #1 on the sides.
(That's how I brought it down, before slydom).
I think you'll both like it even more. You can then go even closer if you like, using a 0a guard, or even no guard at all. This is pretty much the route many of us have taken here, and really you're just delaying the inevitable.

Second, yes cutting it short does help with the constant fret, only thing is, you will want to keep it buzzed nice and close.

Third, yes, you are looking for relief from the anxiety, over losing hair, styling hair, once you buzz down, that's gone!
There are many positive factors, but number one is freedom.
Give it a shot, I bet you'll be saying " why didn't I do this sooner"   O0
Let us know how it goes.

Welcome Metaphor, great to have you on board.  Does being sly liberate you?  Hell yes, you shave once a day and instead of looking into a mirror to see if everything is in place, you're looking in the mirror to admire that shiny dome.  Continue to check out the various threads and you will find it has always been a positive experience for those who have done the deed.

Gotta agree with the other gents, the buzz is a major improvement... too much hair before -- almost the 'mad scientist' look   ;D.  The gradual buzz is a great way to go, but be warned that the closer you get to completely shaved, the greater the urge to do the final deed.  It's great that your fiance likes the change.  Has she mentioned any curiousity about it being even shorter?

Thanks guys!
My Fiancé has actually asked me if I wanted to go shorter. She even said that the shorter hair makes me look younger (not sure I believe that one)
She’s a Black girl and seems to change her hairstyle every couple of weeks.
Men approach hair styles the same way as we pick out a pair of shoes; we find
what we like and wear it until we can’t anymore.
I’m certainly giving serious thought to at least going shorter now. I really enjoyed the “Mad scientist” look for many years, but at my age (45) perhaps change is good.
The constant fretting is the biggest concern. I am simply tired of its tendency to dominate my thoughts.
I greatly appreciate the input I am finding here.

Well I say just take it all off..if you dont like it..then you can just grow it to a style that you like...but...BUT.....you have to give it the 30 day trial period

Welcome, Metaphor. You've found a great site.
I have to echo what others have said. Your look is much better with a shorter look. The #3 is good, but I bet the #2 looks better. Props to your lady for approving of the look. I say ease into it. Go #2, see if you (and her) like it, then a #1 ....etc. etc.
One piece of advice, if you're going to go sly, make sure you do it with enough time before the wedding day. You don't want a two tone nugget on your wedding day. Give it ample time to get some color. With the Einstein mop you had, your dome is probably like the middle of an oreo cookie.

All the best.
Cheers,
Schro

Agree with the color thing ... mine was a bit white when I first shaved.  It takes a good week or two to get some color.  Just be careful ... that first week burns are easy to get (for me at least) ... after a week or two you have some color and no worries.

Welcome to SBGs, Metaphor! 8)

Can't add much to what's already been said.  I'm sure you will rock the SLY look and get over that anxiety :-\. And in the very, very, slim chance you decide to grow it back...it won't take much time to grow it back.  Try it for a few weeks...I'm sure you will keep it SLY once you do! O0

Welcome bro.  As everyone else has said it does free you up.  But it really depends on how you are feeling before the deed.  It sounds like you are a "fencer."  Meaning you just are not sure if you are happy with your hair or not and are debating on going the whole way.  If that is the case then I would say definitely go for it because you will never be satisfied until you do.  Once you have and you give it a while you can compare and see what fits you best.  If you don't like the slick dome you can always grow it right back.  Good luck.  O0

My thinning hair used to drive me nutz. I was always worried about how it was cut, how it looked, how much I'd lost.  Shaving it clean ended all of that.  Best of all, it looked the way I wanted.  I wasn't just trying to make do with what little hair I had left.  I was no longer "going bald".  I was "shaved".  I guess you could say it gave me back that sense of control.

Best of luck!

J

Are you actually balding/thinning/losing hair? You sure dont look like it but let me tell you one thing you have brilliant hair for someone in their 40s. Dont take that as too much of a compliment as you look better with a buzz so dont grow it back!

Got a #2 last night.
My fiancé really liked it.
Think I may try a #1 next time.
You guys are right. I keep wanting to go shorter.
Thanks for the support!

Welcome Metaphor ...  I agree with the guys - you look better with it cut short.   I think you go all the way and shave it clean.  I did so 3 weeks ago from today and I've never been happier.

My 14-year-old daughter's "friend" (I refuse to call him "boyfriend") saw me for the first time since shaving last night, and he said he didn't expect to like it, after hearing I'd shaved.  But, then when he saw me, said he loves it - said I look like a bad ass.   Well, I'm glad he thinks that, because I'm watching him ....

Welcome dude!

Awesome that your girl seems to be into it! Yea, going full sly and having your head completely skinned will take away a lot of the "hassle" stuff....but it is addictive and having a completely bald head should be something that you think looks cool on other dudes already..

if your in that thinking...bro you're golden!

Shave it smooth bro and start your new "sly" life!

Good luck my soon to be bald bro! O0

Welcome to the forum. Best way to go about it as the other bro's have described is to try getting lower and lower. The difference between a buzz with something like the WAHL balding clipper and using a razor is that one is smooth and the other just feels like one days growth. Once you get it down to that level then you might as well just go totally sly.
