Title: Lack of reactions these days
Post by: reddog on August 07, 2022, 11:02:50 AM
Have you guys noticed that there is seldom any reactions to a shaved head anymore? When I first shaved over 9 years ago, I would get a comment once in awhile, or you could see someone giving you an extended look. I guess bald heads are so common now, nobody cares. I actually liked having an uncommon /edgy style. I don't think a shaved head will go out of style anytime soon, with guys of all ages sporting baldie haircuts.

True, I cannot even remember the last comment I got about my shaved head.  I comment more to guys that still have hair in a style I like, often telling them that I am working on getting to their hairstyle.

OTOH, I still get a few beard comments, but not nearly as frequent as 5 to 10 years ago before larger beards came into fashion and became more common.

I think I liked it better when both were less common, now people just assume I am following the crowd.  I like to consider myself starting both before they were "cool" and popular.

I don't get reactions these days.  My friend and neighbor always has something to say but if he doesn't have something to complain about, he'll invent something to complain about.  For the most part, his opinion doesn't count for much because he'd complain even if I let it grow.  Anyway, no reactions here!

No reactions at all around where I live.  Shaved heads are pretty common these days on men of all ages.  My observation is that a lot of young guys have decided to get the jump on MPB and shave as soon as their hairlines start to recede.  Also, the shaved head/full beard look seems to be in vogue with younger guys here.

The last comment I got was a couple months ago at the local home improvement store. I was talking to an employee in the plumbing department with a great looking shaved head, and a guy walked by, looked at us and asked if we were related. I said, no, we go to the same barber.

I have made similar comments to young guys with shaved sides and back, with hair on top (an undercut).  I say we must have the same barber because we have the same haircut, shaved on the sides and back.  My top just needs to get longer. :)

It’s become a more common look. On top of that, the longer you wear a shaved head, rhe more used to it people around you become so they stop commenting on it.

Just imagine what it was like for Yul Brenner and Telly Savalas  back in the 60's. They attracted some beautiful women though. They truly paved the way for acceptance of shaved heads. I'll bet they would be surprised how common their favorite hair style has become.

When I first shaved my head back in 1995, I was living in Tel Aviv. No public figures had shaved heads, except for 1 or 2 musicians.

I had a short, dark beard, and people would cross the street when they saw me coming.

Now, they are so common (along with beards) I can't go outside for more than 5 mins without seeing a shaved headed/bearded guy.

Many public figures have shaved heads, including members of parliament, etc. And it's almost a given that the shaved head comes with a beard, even on ex-military.

I’ve been bald long enough to where none of my friends say anything about it.  I think shaved heads are so common now that strangers don’t give me a glance

The people who know me already don't make it an issue and are already used to it.

I have one friend whom I haven't seen for many years and I might see him soon. The last time he saw me I hadn't started to shave my head bald. I wonder what his reaction will be when he sees me like this?

I don't care if other people make bald jokes. I love this look and feel, although I might regrow the very top of my hair like a skin fade.

Maybe this explains the almost total lack of traffic to this site.

Since I?ve had the SMP done on my scalp, I do get an occasional question as to why I shave my head because people assume that I have a full head of hair, but other than that, I think having a shaved head is now almost the norm!
In fact, I think what is less normal and what you don?t see very often anymore is guys who have advanced male pattern balding still wear hair on their horseshoe!  I had a guy sit down in my barber chair last week with full on male pattern baldness who asked me for a? regular haircut?.  All I could do was taper up the fringe on the sides and back of his head.!

I seldom get any comments anymore. I've been growing my hair out for over 3 months, and a couple people have commented on my hair. I did have a gal friend tell me this week that she likes it shaved better. I'm really looking forward to going back to a bald head soon!

When I started shaving my head nearly fifteen years ago, there weren't that many guys who shaved their heads where I lived.  It was more common to see it in places like New York City, but less common in the suburbs.  Over time, though, shaved heads became more common to the point where it was just another hairstyle, especially on young guys with MPB.

Presently I been doing a #1 hair cut. The cold weather is delaying the use of my pit bull shaver. I have never made a full winter with a shaved head.
The bald head is so common these days. I first saved Bach in 2007 , then it took more nerve than now.

Personally I think it has to do more with the fact that more people have migrated from bulletin boards like this to other social media platforms.  On Reddit there is a chat called "r/bald" that has a lot of daily activity.

Yeah, the Chinese communist government just loves it when you use Reddit111

Yeah, r/bald is extremely popular and has numerous posts every day.

One thing that?s better about this forum is that there?s much more focus on head shaving, products, actually being bald, etc than there is on there.

That subreddit is about 60% pictures posted by guys who think they?re going bald and want reassurance. I was in that boat once too, so I sympathize, but it tends to dominate the feed there.

When I first started shaving my head around the turn of the century/millenium my (late) wife and I had a mobile espresso van and we had a route in a nearby town where we made drinks for a number of businesses. When we started this business I had hair down to my shoulder blades, usually tied back or braided. One of the businesses we delivered to was a hair salon with about 6 hair stylists (all women), and a couple of nail techs. When I shaved my head I was a little concerned about the reaction I would get, especially from this particular business, but the first day I walked in with the scraped grape one of the stylists walked right up to me and asked if I had lost weight. I told her that I had in a manner of speaking and then rubbed my head. At this point she still didn't get it which both pleased and relieved me. I finally had to tell her and she stared at my noggin for a few seconds before she got it.

Really kinda funny for someone who worked with hair for a living.

I did have a guest at a party about a year ago who could not keep from rubbing my freshly shaved head. She just loved it especially the smoothness of it. She couldn't stop talking about it  :)

On another occasion, I ran into an old neighbor that haven't seen in some time. It was at Home Depot. And she said 'I knew it was you, I'd recognize that beautiful bald head anywhere'

I love it when these things happen! Although I'm extremely comfortable with my bald head, I still welcome the praise and reassurances!  :@`

But, I agree, bald heads are everywhere. It's not like the early 2000s when two bald guys would cross paths and the approving look and nod toward each other's bald heads as part of "bald guy code". It's that subtle acknowledgement I don't see so much. Back then, the nod approval was awesome. And then maybe friendly advice like 'don't forget the sunscreen on that noggin'. Loved it.

What I like about the redidit thread is that guys just say it like it is. like 'dude you are losing your head, just shave  it and embrace it'.

What I like about it is that it simplifies the experience. It basically says, just shave it and you will be happier because you no longer have to deal with the emotions and stress of it all and no one really even cares.

There was a time I was worrying about losing my hair that I even subscribed to one of those hair restoration pill and serum services.

While I can still grow out hair on top of my head, I don't worry about losing it anymore. In fact, I like shaving it bald not just because of the look and feel, it's just way more convenient and economic for me.
