Title: Skin Cancer heads up today at work.
Post by: Glenr on September 13, 2007, 02:51:52 AM
Had a customer come into work today and he was probably in his late 60's.

I took him out into the warehouse to show him something and he said to me that he hoped I wear a hat. (at this point a had not actually looked at him closely)

I said yeah I am aware of wearing a hat in the sun etc and he said good because I didnt want to end up like him.

So I had a gander at his head and noticed half the skin on his head was basically gone. Pretty much the whole left hemisphere was thin scar tissue.

Apparently he had gone in to get a mole that was bothering him sorted and ended up finding out it was cancer.

He said he has to go back and get more skin taken off soon.  :'(

Tell you what its got me thinking more about it.

Glen

Yeah, that's why it's very important to ALWAYS wear sunscreen during the day.  Even if you don't think you'll be out in the sun, it's good to wear it just in case you do end up out there.  It's also important to carry some with you in your vehicles and even your desk at work just in case.

What do you use that works well for the dome, guys?

This AZ sun is just as brutal, probably more so. I have to be sure to make that part of my routine.
Need some suggestions, thanks.

xnewyawka....  i go back & forth with (2) sunscreens.   i apply the banana boat sport (ultra sweatproof) spf 30 & the coppertone sport (ultra sweatproof) spf50.  i use the sweatproof because the summers in NW florida r brutal (thank GOD 4 a/c).  the banana boat one comes in an orange/blue tube & the coppertone comes in a blue tube.  i bought mine @ walmart.

I use the Matte For Men for everyday use.  I has an SPF of 25.  For long periods in the sun I use Coppertone SPF 45.

Glen that is aweful to hear about that guy at work. Skin cancer kills 8000 Australians every year. There is very little ozone layer over much of the continent so even 1 hour in the sun can do serious damage.

Joe.Like Warhawk says,Banana Boat make a great sunscreen which has a good moisterizer in it to give  you a nice shine. I use the Sport 30SPF rating.

I have never tried the Headblade suncreeen.

It will be interesting--now that more and more white guys are head shaving--how that will affect future outbreaks of skin cancer noggin-wise. :-\

Great point Robmeister,

I think as long as most use common sense and liberally apply the sunscreen like you do on any other part of your body when in the sun, then you pose no real greater danger with getting Melanoma.

Do all of you always put sunscreen on no matter what?  I never really gave it much thought until I started reading this post.  I wore sunscreen when I was in Florida for vacation...but never really considered the consequences here in Indiana. Yes it gets hot here too...but i rarely even burn or anything here....but I know that by NOT burning still causes sun cancer.  WOW....you really got me thinking here.

Thanks for the input guys.

Tyler, the Matte for Men, does it tend to stay greasy looking or does it soak up pretty well?

JDog, I know you like to shine, bro, but does the Banana Boat soak in as well?

Being mostly Italian, I tend to have a bit more oilier skin at times, lol.

And Tim, from what I've read in the past in health magazines and the like, we're getting damage that we can't see.
I think we should be putting on some type of sunscreen each day. Minimal probably an spf of 15. Of course, you then use your activities to gauge which spf number you should choose.

Glenr, good post to get the guys aware and thinking.    O0

One (actually two) parts of your body that can't be ignored is your ears. My father in law is outdoors a lot. A few years ago, he was diagnosed with mild melanoma on both ears. He rarely put sunscreen on them and he paid the price. He was the reason that I went to wearing the bucket/Gilligan style hats or straw hats for golfing to cover my ears. When I'm wearing a baseball cap, I always put sunscreen on the ears.

I really like the HeadLube Matte, but I use L'Oreal's Comfort Max After Shave Balm with SPF 15. Goes on easliy, not oily, smells good, has Vitamin E, is alcohol free, and is $7.50 for 3.3 oz (a lot cheaper than the Neutrogena I was trying out).

Hey Tyler, I know HeadBlade has Head Shade, but is there any consideration to putting sun screen in their HeadLube?

Great idea schro.  That would be awesome to have two products in one.   Fan of HeadLube be great to have a sunscreen in it.

Joe, Yeah the Banana boat Sunscreen that I have been using gives a great shine.

I was using a more generic brand called Ausscreen which gave me a more oily texture on the dome.

I now use Headlube Glossy and it gives a wonderful non oily shine. Wish it did have an SPF rating though.

I just started a 2 week treatment for AKs (keeping a daily log on another post).  My dermatologist recommended Neutrogena, UltraSheer Dry Touch Sunblock. SPF 55.  It has something called helioplex in it that covers uva and uvb.  I've been using for about 3 days.  Not greasy at all.

Hey fellas, my first post here on SBG. O0

A little intro and background info before getting down to business. I am not sly yet (coming soon!) but have been thinning/receding for years. Thanks to my Irish ancestors I have very fair skin and burn bad. Sunburned scalp sucks. Wearing sunscreen is part of my normal routine if I am going to be outdoors for more than a few minutes. My usual sunscreen is the same stuff a lot of you guys use--SPF 30 Banana Boat Sport. I also wear a Tilley, palm or straw hat to shade the ol' melon.

That out of the way, a couple questions for you guys who have used products such as Matte for Men, Head Shade and L'Oreal Comfort Max.

1. Do they leave your skin with that funny feeling like most regular sunscreens do? I think you know what I am talking about. It isn't a greasy feeling, just a strange "residue" that hangs on till you wash it off with soap and water.

2. Does sweat cause any of those products to run into your eyes and make them burn? I sometimes leave sunscreen off my forehead (as long as I am wearing a hat!) because of that.

Thanks!

Sabata,
Welcome. I was posting/observing on this site even before I did the deed and went sly. I had many questions as well. As far as sunscreen goes, the L'Oreal does not leave you with a greasy feeling at all. It's a nice product.

As far as sweating goes, if it's bad, I re-apply whatever I'm using. Just my personal take.

My suggestions to you.
1. Open a Harp.
2. Chase it with a Bushmills
3. Buy a HeadBlade!

All the best,
Schro!!

It's designed to give a Matte look, so it doesn't leave my head greasy.  Though it's much more expensive than the others, I like it a lot.

I hope they are.  I've mentioned it to Todd a couple of times.  I really like HeadLube, but I only wear it at night when I know there isn't any sun to burn my dome.

Sabata, welcome to Sly Bald Guys!  Feel free to post up an introduction on the Introductions board so that we can give you a proper welcome.

!. I've never had a funny feeling from wearing any of the products you mention or had a funny residue.

2. Neither of those products have caused my eyes to burn when I sweat.

I'm of South Asian origin so I don't think it's a high risk, but it's worth using sun screen just in case.

Watch the sun!  I was avid sun guy for years. I had to have many laser treatments for pigmentation (brown spots) and a lot of crusty spots on the nose frozen off over a 2-year period. Im more careful now. But I guess a lot of us get these when we're older.

The headshade stuff isn't bad.  I'm almost done with this bottle.  The only problem is it's SPF 15 which means after a couple of hours in the sun you might as well be wearing cooking oil.  A little sun is not a bad thing... studies have shown that if you have a tan you have a much better survival rate with melenoma.  That being said, anytime you get sunburn you double your chance of getting melenoma.  My routine is pretty simple... anytime I'm out without a hat for a decent amount of time, I'm wearing head shade.  If I'm doing work outside, I'm probably wearing a hat.  If I'm going to the beach, or plan on being outside in hot sun for a while, I'm putting real sunscreen on.  SPF 15 is enough for moderate sun for maybe an hour and a half of exposure, but I wouldn't trust my life with it against a day on the beach.  I think if HB were to throw some zinc and SPF 30 or 45 into their Headlube, life would be good.

I am really have tender skin so I can get sunburnt really easy!
and have had some skin cancer taken off, no fun!!!

I always keep at least SPF45 everywhere I go even in the winter time. Plus if I am out in
the sun for long periods of time I wear a hat!
