I'm considering getting rid of Comcast, primarily because the greedy bastards took the NFL Network off the normal tier and put it on the sports tier... Other than that (and the cost) I'm pretty happy with them.
Who here has DirecTV or Dish network? What are your thoughts about either?
I used to have DirecTV and liked it, but that was like 5 years ago...

hey baldrob.... i have cox communications (cable) here in florida. i am pretty much satisified with them since i have their fast internet as well. i was about 2 go direct tv but i hear that the reception sucks (at times) when weather is rainy or cloudy from what people tell me. with cable u don't have 2 worry 'bout the weather. i'm kinda curious what the other sly brahs will say on this subject.

We had a one month trial run with Dish before I took it out (yeah, I said I took it out ..... they mail you the boxes and you have to do all the work...they don't even remove the dish off the roof). It was part of an attempted bundle package with AT&T to try and get dish, internet, and phone all on one bill. Needless to say, it was a fucking nightmare. It'll be a cold day in hell before I even consider dish again.
We're now back to digital cable and they've added many HD channels. Pretty sweet.
-
Cost-wise, DirecTV will run about $70/month, and that includes HBO and a HD and DVR receiver... Comcast is running me $85/month now for HD and DVR service with no HBO (or NFL Network....)

Strictly a cable guy here. Was staying at my folks when the new house was built and everytime there was severe overcast or bad rains, no reception. Have Charter now and with the newest HD tv's is something called a cable card. They slide it in back of tv like an ATM card, no receiver/extra remote needed. I get all HD channels and they are adding more all the time plus TMC and several SHOWTIME channels On top of that where the HD box cost ten bucks extra a month, the cable card cost a buck.
-
sounds like a pretty sweet deal there, Paul.
-
Only drawback is their customer service department in the business office. :x! :x!

We're with Time Warner cable. I get digital cable, digital phone (long distance included), and high speed internet for $100/month. I've had both dish network and direct TV before and got tired of having to have the digital box on every TV. Of the 2 I'd say Dish Network worked better for us. With cable, our main TV has the digital box and the rest just have the regular cable hookup.
We're kinda overboard on the TV's here. Got 7 total in the house, all hooked up to cable. The latest one is in the master bath. Kinda overboard, I know.

I've got DirectTV and have had no problems. I might lose service during a MAJOR thunderstorm but that is rare. Grandma has Charter and their customer service SUCKS. She was without for 7 days; It took a number of calls (2 - 3) a day to get them out. Only when I started quoting rates from Direct TV and threatening to go to the PSC did they finally find the problem.
-
I used to have DirecTV and liked it. It did cut out in the rain sometimes, but only when it was a really heavy rain. At the time, they'd just started offering local channels as part of the package. I kept Comcast's antenna service instead because I got more local channels than what DirecTV was offering at the time. I had DirecTV on the TVs in my living room and bedroom, and the Comcast antenna service for the TV in my kitchen.
When I made the transition from dial-up to broadband internet service, Comcast offered to buy back the dish for twice what I'd paid for it, if I signed up for digital cable. It was too good a deal to turn down. The dish is still on the roof and I could have it reconnected at any time, but probably won't. I can get more cable channels in my kitchen now -- which means I can watch Fox News when I'm eating my breakfast and dinner.
-
Dish Network for me. 47.99 for America's Top 200 + locals, no movie channels. Weather problems are rare (at least for me), maybe 5-7 brief outages over the past 5 years. Very heavy rain or snow. Local cable sucks.

Rupert Murdochs News Ltd controls 85percent of all PAY Tv in Australia.
I have Foxtel Digital which is the equivelant of Cable TV.
I pay $110 per month, I get around 100 channels. Luckily they have ESPN so I can watch NFL and NCAA ball.
I have their service called IQ which is like TIVO and lets you pause live TV,set record programs and series link them so they record all their episodes(extra 10 bucks per month). With the wife being at home looking after the little one all day it is a good thing to have. Rarely are there outtages. Got Free Installation on a 12 month contract.
-
i got the rabbit ears with the aluminum foil on them. i get three channels. lpb is one of them. maybe one day they will have other options here in the swamp. :'(that is horse crap, i have direct tv and it is ok i guess.

When you look at price, the satellite companies will always win. It's much cheaper for them since they don't have to maintain the infrastructure that cable does. Dish or DirecTV is going to be releasing a TON of HD channels here pretty soon. Though, satellite doesn't have video on demand, which is pretty cool if they have it in your area.
-
I have Direct TV, no issues at all in over 2 years. Charter kept promising a DVR in my area, but it never came through, they're slow to upgrade and slow on customer service.
-

I think I read somewhere that it's not possible to get video on demand with satellite, at least not with current technology. I love video on demand. That way when I sit down at 9:00 at night and find there's nothing on worth watching, I don't have to take a trip down to Blockbuster.

That's true, there is no VOD on satellite. They are working on it.

I had cable for years (TCI, then AT&T, then Comcast). The selection of channels stunk - still does, without paying a whole lot more money. The service went out more with the cable than it has with the DirecTV.
I do not care right now about HD or OnDemand. My newest TV is about 9 years old I will not buy another one until one of them quits working.
For my money, DirecTV is better than the local cable.
-
I have what we like to call the welfare channels. Really, the rabbit ears and tin foil like Paulie said. Haven't had Comcast which is the only local cable, mainly because they're too damn expensive. Had DirecTV after I first got married and loved it. Plenty of channels and don't remember a major outage. My mom has DirecTV at her house in the mountains and the only time I can remember it going out was during a major snow storm.
-
Direct TV ROCKS!!!!! I can't watch the Bears in Minnestoa on a consistent basis and my wife can't watch the Packers. Thank heaven for the SuperFan Pass. We get all the games in HD baby!!!! I have an antenna for local channels if it does go out, but that has only happened 2 or 3 times this year. The longest time it was out, was maybe an hour. But we just started to watch the programming on the DVR.
-
I suspect everyone might think this will be strange but I had cable TV disconnected years ago and never looked back. Simply put, I realized one day that i spending more time WATCHING life than living it, so I went cold turkey. Yes, I admit, I really like cable and dish and the sports and history content. For me, nearing age 50, I rather go fishing than watch another bass fishing show....
What has occured withh me though, is collecting DVDs. I like the old movies(well made movies with real talent ) and all westerns.
-
I love my Dish Network, and my 3 DVR's. Anyone who has kids will never want to live without a DVR once you're used to one. Plus no more fumbling to find a tape if you find something you want to tape. I don't have many issues with storm outages... very rare, but I found when cable went out, it could be out for a day or more. No apologies, or billing credits, ever came my way. Customer service has been very good with Dish Network for me.
-
I have Direct but the only thing I dont liek about it is ....we have been a customer for over 4 years...so you guessed it...we have all the old sh*t....cant upgrade without paying out 300 bucks. Plus now we have two more tv to add to it adn tehre is another 150 bucks..screw them I will cancel...and sign back up in three months...where this is a will there is a way.
-
We had a one month trial run with Dish...it was a f**king nightmare. It'll be a cold day in hell before I even consider dish again.
Get to the point, man!
.....so....you did NOT like Dish?
-
I had DirectTV (with DVR), DSL, Home (local & Long Distance) phone & a cell phone through Qwest for just over a year... my monthly bill was $160. I was happy with all but the cell service. I lost my dish reception once last year due to a storm... which was a moot point because the power went out 5 minutes later....
Then again, I live in phoenix, so cloud cover or storms are rarely an issue.
Anyway, I moved in May (into a north facing, ground floor apartment), so the dish was useless to me. I ended up moving over to Cox for internet, cable & house phone and AT&T for cell... unfortunately, I'm paying about $20 a month now...
What I have found is the on screen guide for Cable is easier for me to use because it only shows the channels that I'm subscribed to, where DirectTV showed EVERY channel in the guide... regardless if I had access or not.
-
We're with Time Warner cable. I get digital cable, digital phone (long distance included), and high speed internet for $100/month.
Is that the reglar price, only 100 bucks?
Seems like too good a deal for all three services. O0
Or is that just a "trial period" price for the first year?
And then the price goes way up. :Xo!

That's the regular price. I've been with them for about 2 years. There's competition in our area. I could get the same deal with a company called Everest.

FYI, Dish Network gives you the option of seeing everything or just what your subscribed package is.

I keep getting "Please come back" offers from DirecTV and at times I am really tempted, because it does seem to be a better deal financially. When I had it before, it did go out a few times during extremely heavy rainstorms, but that didn't happen very often, certainly no more frequently than when the cable goes out.
The reason I went back to cable and the reason I stick with it is because Comcast gives a better rate for their internet service if you're a cable subscriber. To keep the lower rate, I would have to at least keep their most economical package -- which is basically local broadcast channels. The cable also works better for the small TV I have in the kitchen, where there is no room for a satellite box. By the time you factor the cable economy package into the equation ($10.50 per month), there is still a slight savings to going with DirecTV, but enough to justify the hassle of switching over.
Those of you who have DirecTV or Dish Network -- who is your internet provider? Would you get a better deal on internet service if you switched to cable TV?

Well, it's a moot issue for me. There is no cable where I live. It's dish, antenna or nothing. Only ISP's are dial-up.

I'm about 40 miles outside Atlanta ... but no one knows where the heck this place is!!

Nope ... too much distance between houses to make it worthwhile

We recently switched to Time Warner Cable after having Dish Network for about three years...overall, we liked Dish Network better. The DVR was a bit easier to use (and not as buggy), and I liked the channel lineup a little better (although about 90% of them are the same). The one upside to cable is that it never cuts out. Here in Wisconsin, it wasn't unusual to lose the satellite signal for a while during heavy rain or snow. It wouldn't stay out that long (maybe an hour at a time), but it was still pretty inconvenient. Even so, we're thinking about switching back.

direct tv and have not had a problem. got it so i could watch deadliest catch and have not regretted it since. the reality shows are of great interest or should i call it entertainment. it come down to entertainment and then i find i just get bored of them and then another show will catch my interest. but of all the reality shows i have seen deadliest catch is still entertaining. for our area direct tv was the best deal and i happen to get it because they offered it where i bought my tv.
