I know this topic or whether or not people prefer facial hair has been discussed. Or what kind of facial hair we prefer but I just thought I'd ramble on about finally getting back to work. I just got back from an interview with Farm Fresh and they hired me to be an overnight stocker. The hours are around 9pm or 10pm until about 6 or 7am. The crazy thing though is that they want me to shave my goatee off. Of course I agreed because I need the job real bad right now and they started me out at a very good pay rate. Better than I had expected and better than most grocery stores would start people around here. So I couldn't turn it down, especially not over some facial hair. But at the same time I still think it's crazy because they are going to be closed during the hours I'm working. Why would they care about me having a close cut goatee. I'm not going to be interacting with any customers. I just don't like my face with no facial hair. I just don't look the same. I don't know what it is. It sort of makes my face look like it doubles in size. But hey, what can I do? Just thought I'd whine a little. Like I said, I couldn't turn it down. The overnight hours will allow me to keep watching my son and leave my days open to go back to school when I'm ready.

Congrats on the job, Lance. Sounds crazy to me, too. But you do what ya gotta do.
Best of luck!!! O0

I worked at a grocery store before...they're idiotic like that. They HAVE to follow the company guidelines when they hire you. However since you work those night hours, you will probably be working with a lot more laid back group of people, including your manager. Working those hours, you should become comfortable with them rather quickly. Thats when you slip by with the goatee shaved on a one all around. THen two weeks later it goes up to a two. Leave it at two guard max. The manager you spoke with was most likely the day time manager, and not the stock manager.
If not, you can always apply to a similar job somewhere else now that you have "experience". Or you can keep the totally sly look, like Mike in your avatar, vin diesel has the totally sly too. You'll get used to it. But I feel ya man, I much prefer facial hair as well.
-
Lance, glad to hear you found a job. O0
Sounds like it fits in with your schedule too so that's not a bad thing.
The goatee can always be grown back, like Chico says.
You just have to go about it slowly, and maybe as time goes on and they see how you work and fit in, it won't matter. Some times it just has to be that way.
Like SLYin KC said: "You do what ya gotta do".
Good luck with the new job!

I'm sure it's somy kind of company policy crap. That's one thing about being self employed, I make the rules about facial hair.
-
I feel your pain Lance, I have a baby face and look like I'm 12 when I shave the facial fuzz.
-
The shaving part sucks Lance, but the news that you are back at work is awesome. Sounds like the hours work great for you and the wife's schedule too. Every time you get bummed about the goat...think of the paycheck.

Yeeeesssss! Another Mr. Clean!
Just kiddin' bro...
don't sweat it, you might come to actually like it after a while...plus you don't have much choice right now...
I could never believe not having a goatee with a bald head either...but I'm really diggin' the whole "extra bald" thing..
Don't sweat it bro..you're in good company O0
Shine on and congrats on the work, my fellow "Mr. Clean" bald brutha!

I. I just don't like my face with no facial hair. I just don't look the same. I don't know what it is. It sort of makes my face look like it doubles in size.
I know what you mean. I felt exactly the same way during my brief Mr. Clean phase. But this is too good a deal for you to turn down -- though for the record, I agree with you that it's ridiculous that they even care about this for a position that has no contact with the public. But it could be worse -- at least they aren't objecting to your sly dome.
Congratulations on getting the job.

A lot of company's have the policy to avoid discrimination. A friend of mine who works for an airline cannot grow a beard because the pilots cannot. The company choose to make it an across the board thing.
-
Really glad to hear about you getting a decent job. The goatee issue does but a cloud over it. On the face of it (sorry) it doesn't sound so bad; a sly guy who has to go the extra mile and shave off his goatee. What would get me is being told I HAD to shave it off. Being told how you have to look would piss anybody off. But ... Since this is the way it has to be for a whole why not enjoy it. get into the new persona the mr. clean look will give you. As stated above, Mike from "The Sheild" it totally sly; and he rocks the look. So can you. I know where you're coming from in finding the face in the mirror so strange. But; maybe for now; embrace it .... and keep your eye out for a different, less restricitve job. (and again; keep your eyes open; see how strictly all this is enforced. Maybe , if they like you; after some time if you explain your position -- you don't interact with customers, etc. ...who knows; they may allow it . )
all the best,
John

Until somebody comes along and says they have to wear a beard for religious reasons. Then all the rules go out the window.

lance....gr8 2 hear that ya got a job that fits your schedule. if i was u... i would do some research on the company's policy of facial hair because most companies that i know accept facial hair as long it is neatly trimmed. until then... who knows....u might grow 2 like that mr. clean look.

Lance congrats on the new job mate.
Sorry to hear about having to get rid of your facial hair.
Maybe like Chico says, you could talk to the night stock manager and see whether he would have a problem with you keeping the goat.
A policy of no facial hair is plain ridiculous anyways.
-
Lance, embrace the fact that you have a good paying job that fits your schedule and lifestyle. There are rules we all have to deal with, you should hear the bellyaching here about not being able to wear jeans to work.
Look at it this way, you could be working at McDonalds, in a butt ugle uniform, with no facial hair.
-
Hey buddy, glad to hear about the job! Congrats bro! I believe someone else said it already, but it's most likely the store manager was the one who interviewed/hired you and it could just be his own personal rule. You might want to take a good look at the company's employee handbook to see the grooming policies and then also talk to the night stock manager about it once you're in the door... also look at your co-workers... they might be sporting facial hair also. Bottom line is you won't be seeing the store manager that much anyway, but I'd caution you to watch sliding in with the goat anyway, since there's likely a probationary period where they could terminate you for any reason and you don't want to take any chances by trying to slide by w/the goat. I've been a grocery store manager before and most of the time those guys have huge egos so just watch it about being too rebellious, at least until you're through the probation, then you can get by with things easier.
-
Yeh, Good luck with the new job Lance! Bummer about the petty rules. I guess if you're working with fresh food at all it might be a health & safety thing, apart from that it just seems ridiculous. oh well ... as someone else said ... just think about the paycheck! O0

Lance, congrats on the job! The beautiful thing is that it's much easier to get a job when you have a job. So, if you don't like this one, make sure to get a better one while you have this one.
-
Well, I did it. I shaved the goat all the way yesterday. It's really not all that bad. It is something different and I'm sure I'll like it even more as the days go by. But I have to admit that I really don't mind it. I found myself today rubbing my chin and thinking how clean it felt. I don't know, just something about it all being gone makes me feel sort more "cleaned up." Makes me feel cooler too. I leaned in the fridge this morning to get something to drink and I could feel the cool air run across my face. It kind of felt refreshing. I just may end up joining the rest of my "Mr. Clean" brothers here for good.

Congrats on the job dude ! money is money in this crazy world
-
It might have to with the fact that you are stocking food and the perception of and being clean. I remember when every grocer wore a white shirt and every man in banking and brokerage wore white shirts. Being in the military and law enforcement, I have never liked goatees or beards and NOTHING is worse to me than a police dept hat allows officers to wear the things.
-
When I use to work in the grocery store...all teh stock guys...including the managers had to wear white shirts and ties and clean shaven face. Now they just seem to wear what ever....even though the tie pretty much got in the way alot....i kinda miss seeing thing wear the white shirt and tie....but oh well.....

sorry about the goat. cograts about the job. i also work at a grocery store. i work at whole foods market. (as a night baker). they promote indaviduality. there guidlines state.... no jewelry that will create a safety issue. besides jewelry in general, facial jewelry must be tasteful and kept to a minimum. one facial piercing is permitted. you may show your tattoos unless they are drug related. i think there starting pay for most positions are 10$ an hour. if you work nights its 11.50 an hour. ive been there for 1 year and 3 months and im currently making 13.50. its not bad at all. I'm really there for the benefits.
