Title: Time to shave?
Post by: professor on August 29, 2018, 08:11:29 AM
I am 44 years old and been thinning from the front and the rear for quite some time.  I have been buzzing my head for several years and recently been thinking is it time to shave it off completely.  Is it time to shave or leave it buzzed?

The buzz looks fine but I think you would really rock a shaved head.

Shave it. Hair grow so fast, if you don't like you will have a buzz cut soon. But I think you get used by the style.

You're so close already, why not? Once the thought of shaving is in your head, you won't stop wondering until you do it. It will look great and feel even better. Keep it for 30 days and you will be hooked!

I would buzz, no guard. Seems easies since you still gotta lot of hair left on top.

But like the guys here said, shave it and it will look very similar. If you don't like it, it will grow back to where it is now in 4 days. Either way, you already overcame your balding, which I think is strong.

IMO, shaved smooth always looks better than a short buzz.  I think of a short buzz as just a slow step to shaving.

I agree with all others. Get the razor onto it and see how you go. Hopefully you'll love it.

Reddog, you are 100% correct that once the notion is in your head it is impossible to get it out.  Everyday I  struggle with the decision mainly because of what others will perceive.  This is the psychological torture I have been dealing with and why it would be easier to lose the rest quickly.  The funny thing I am generally very confident and make decisions quickly but this once has been more difficult to conclude.

just do it and your self confidence will grow.  I shaved mine at your age at a time when it was very uncommon. Never regretted doing it,

Yes Prof, I was anxious while deciding to shave, and I had a full head of hair. One night I decided to do a buzzcut the next morning, didn't sleep all night, and got up at 4am and got the clippers out. I buzzed it to a #4, but wanted shorter, so did a #2. Hated that, so clippered with no guard and razored it bald in the shower.

Of course, my then girlfriend freaked out, but later that day she said she liked it and told me to keep it shaved.

Once you make that first pass with a razor, you will feel a huge relief.

A regular comment is why didn't I do this sooner. I feel much more confident  once I shaved.  Go for it.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback.  Last night I took the plunge and joined the club.  Glad to be rid of that anxious feeling I was having to make the decision.

Congratulations @professor

It take 30 days to get your shaving routine perfected, or at least get it completed in an acceptable amount of time.  It take about the same amount of time to become accustomed to seeing yourself in the mirror without shock.  So do your best to stick with it for at least 30 days.  I recommend daily shaving for the 30 days, so you do not go back and forth with seeing stubble.  After that some guys back off to every other day, or even every third day.  But man of us like to remain smooth and stubble free so we continue with daily shaving.

@slybeard thank you for the shaving advice.  One question, I got several small cuts when shaving will they simply get cut open again if I shave again so soon or do i need to give them a couple of days to heal?

Looks really good.  Keep shaving daily and the cuts won't be a problem.  Suggest exposing the skull to small doses of sun (not in middle of day) and the color will even up.

You can also use a little self tanning lotion until it evens out.

If they're small cuts you should be fine to go over them the next day. Small cuts will heal very quickly and leave no scab. If in doubt wait a day or two.
Be careful with the sun. Not sure what it's like in your part of the world but it is brutal in Perth summers. I only ever got sunburn on the dome once and will NEVER do that again. It hurt...a lot.
Agree with the others though. The look suits you.

Usually when guys ask this question I tell them to do whatever they think looks best.  But this time, I just have to be honest with you, that  buzz cut looked awful on you.  Your hair loss is so advanced that the buzz made it even more obvious!  It looked like you were in some kind of "denial".

You OWN the shaved dome!  You CHOOSE this style.  You are a Confident man who chooses to shave his head.  OWN IT.  ROCK IT!

@Semi-Sly, your observation is exactly what I was always wary of and the main reason that pushed me to look for advice. You never want to be the one who is holding onto something when it is clear what the end result will be. Now entering my third week of shaving and couldn’t be happier.

what kind of feedback have you getting from family, friends, etc.

In general, there has been little to no reaction from family and friends. All of the feedback I have received has been positive. The most frequent comments have come from friends and colleagues that also shave their head or balding and these reactions have been by far the most positive and supportive.

I'm glad to hear you are getting positive reactions. I experienced the same thing. You look great with a shaved head, I hope you are enjoying your new hairstyle.
