.. is what my former girlfriend said when I called her. Former by my choice, not hers.
I'm exactly 48 hours since taking the plunge. Too late to be on the fence, but hoping everything turns out well.
Hard to be younger (30) and deal with it as all of your friends don't have to, but sure feels better now that it's over with.
I know the tanning process takes a while, but I'll be damned if I don't look like I just came out of the leukemia ward. Gotta do something about that.
Anyway, thought I'd say hi, my name is Adam, and thanks in advance for having a place to find answers!
Me before - (silly faux-hawk combover):

Welcome to the frat, Adam. Looks good. Give it 30 days and you'll never regret it.
-
welcome dude... .your ex was cute...
-
Yo Adam welcome to the forum bro. You look rad sly. I once wore the faux hawk too sadly.
-
Welcome Boostd4.
First Pic...Woody Woodpecker
Second Pic...Not Bad..not sure whats with the top though
Third and Fourth pic.... Fk'in Aaaaa O0
I have to say I was worried as I scrolled down but damn man, what a improvement. As far as the white pasted look we all have at the begining, it will blend. I think SlyinKC used a tanning cream to tone his a little, maybe he can post up which brand but seemed happy with it.
In the first 2 pics you look fair complected, but a little more tan in the face on the last 2...lighting??
Anyway, as wpruitt stated, give it 30 days of slick before you make your decision to go back. You need to experience the feelings of freedom first!!
-
adam.....welcome 2 the sly fraternity. glad that ya found us. take your time on tanning the dome. that's one place u don't want 2 get a sunburn. anyways...post up often & let us know your routine. c ya 'round the forum. your dome is rocking, brah. O0

yea, there's really no going back. The silly faux-hawk hid my MPB well, but was a NIGHTMARE to maintain.
I was trapped in a hat unless I had an hour to get ready to go somewhere. It kept me from doing all sorts of things I loved (especially swimming). If I hadn't taken 45 minutes to shower, shave and comb up the doo, I just didn't do it if I couldn't wear a hat (nicer bars, impromptu dinners with the ex at a decent restaruant, etc). As silly as the haircut was, and seems to be more popular these days, the girls really didn't mind it at all. I'm hoping that the sly look will be as popular.
I put off shaving it forever because I have a crest at the top back of my dome that - to the touch - feels huge to me. I was certain that if I shaved my head I'd have this massive cone deal going on that I've seen on other guys who I'd advise to let it grow...
Turns out the crest doesn't look bad at all. I'd prefer a more symmetrical look, but I've gotten quite a few compliments. I guess what's left is weeding out the sincere ones from the "just being nice" ones.

Dude you look AWESOME bald ! Makes me want to shave MY head...aw, wait...for get it..
looks cool though...sound like you're diggin' the new "bald you"
Keep it slick and sly brutha!
-
boostd, welcome to the SBG site!, you made the right choice for sure.
And you're absolutely correct in saying there's no going back. Give it the 30 days like the guys said. I have a feeling though you will know you made the right decision well before that. I know I can't stand to go a day without being slick and smooth!
Your dome looks much better shaved. Enjoy the new found freedom and remember to put on the sunblock if you're going to be out in the sun, in the pool. Keep us posted on how you make out.

What have I (you) done?... well, let me tell you, you have made probably one of the smartest decisions in your life. You kicked mother nature in the butt... no more worrying and wasting time trying to cover up your MPB. Wash, shave, and go enjoy your life. It doesn't matter what others think... if they have a problem with it, it's their problem -- you have already rid yourself of your problem. Your MPB looks a lot like mine when I shaved 3 years ago. There's no problem with your head shape either. Definitely keep shaving for 30 days. If you have any apprehension at all, you will need a good month to feel your way through it. You'll soon be wondering what it was like to have hair. Sorry about the psycho girlfriend, but maybe you'll start attracting a whole new bunch of women you never knew were out there. In the meantime, we've got your back.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the replies!
I've never shaved with "oil" before (but I only shaved my face before...).. just some Nivea foaming shave gel and a Mach3.
I hear that a layer of oil of some sort really helps shaving skulls.. the first and only time my head was shaved (two days ago) we just used what I use on my face and I don't have any irritations or anything yet... my brother is sly and he gets irritation and some zits occasionally. We have IDENTICAL mpb (he went sly 5 years before I would). I've always had a better complection though... curious if that will hold true to my scalp.
He said he religiously washes pillow cases (twice a week) because with a shaved head, they get grimey/oily much quicker... you guys do that?
-
Hey boost, good to hear your first shave went well.
You may want to check out some posts in the "head shaving" and "product reviews" sections. You will get some ideas and opinions on different combinations that may work better for you.
Myself and some of our other bro's like the way the (KoS) oil works, while some prefer only Headslick or KoS Alpha gels. It's all a matter of what degree of comfort you get and what works best for you.
It's cool that your brother shaves the dome too, now you will have even more in common to talk about and trade opinions.
As far as the pillowcases, I agree. I always had tendency for oily skin and found out the same problem. One thing that should help is to either use the Bald Guyz wipes, or just wash the dome before hitting the sack. That will help with time between washing the pilowcases, lol. Good luck and keep it smooth!

In forums such as this you can expect everyone to say you look good shaved no matter what. to be honest; some guys have asked our opinions on how they look shaved; and even when it's not quite the right choice for the guy; most of the guys in here will say; "you rock the look, dude," or some such. Having said that ; I would HONESTLY say that a shaved head LOOKS REALLY GOOD ON YOU. A big improvement . Good head shape, good facial proportions. Get a little sun each day ( while the nice weather lasts) and you wont have the 'pasty' look long. You definitely do NOT look like you just came off the cancer ward.
You rock the look, man; really
John

Adam, welcome to the brotherhood. Bro, much improved look! I was in the same boat as you (I'm not 30 yet either) and finally took the plunge and I've been much more confident about my looks and have gotten quite alot of attention from the lay-days. As the others have said, give it time to get used to it, don't be in a rush to "tan" the dome without some sunscreen, and be prepared for an onslaught of compliments!!!
-
boostd4 -- Welcome to this bunch of smoothies, and congrats on your Sly look. Terrific change for the better. I bet that after the first week of getting used to the feel and look (each time you pass a mirror or plate glass window!) you'll be completely comfortable. You have the right noggin and features to effortlessly pull it off. Great!
Best Wishes,
MLNHD

To echo what has been said before ... looks great man! O0
-
Looks good, it only gets better.
-
Welcome to the World of the SLY, Adam! 8) The SLY look suits you well! O0
-
Welcome bro and like the others have said, it looks cool man.
-
Like Joe has said. There is some awesome information in the Techniques and Product Reviews areas of this forum.
There are many different types of routines that you could try to get the best results. And over time and with practice shaving your dome will become effortless and second nature.
-
Welcome, Adam.

Welcome, Adam, You've made a great choice becoming SLY. I think you'll become addicted and be glad you did. O0

I'm getting almost exactly 50/50 opinions from people I interact with.
One older guy I work with actually said to me, "What did you do?... Don't EVER do that again.. it's not you."
... like I had FUCKIN CHOICE! Sorry.. that really pissed me off.
But in general, I go back and forth. The initial happy-time relief that my skull is not too wierd shaped to pull it off is starting to wear off.
But in good news, I think it actually looks better with about 2-3 days growth, or 1/16" of stubble. I don't know if that disqualifies me from being "sly" but it's my opinion so far.
Maybe my skin is just over-compensating, but I'm a shiny MF'er when it's razored down slick. I tried the bald-guyz headwipes, but I still get really shiny... like you can see reflections in my upper forehead. I'm guessing it's just oil. Not sure if that's just my skin type or if I have any choice. I'd like it to NOT be shiny and just be flat.... keeping the hair 1/16" long helps with that... less broad shiny spots.
Anyway, I'm shaving against the grain to get that UBER-slick dome whenever I have time to get in the sun, so that it can tan as completely as possible. I realize that if I like the 1/16" stubble, it's harder to tan that way. I'll probably be slick most of the time until it tans up.
I have a wedding to go to on Friday and my g/f (who was the "ex" in my first post, and now we're trying to make it work... she has converted to a sly-lover.. muahah) is a little paranoid about pictures and what not since I have the "kimo" look going on. I'd be a liar to say that I wasn't a little shy about it myself.
I have pretty much fair skin. I "can" tan, but it takes a jump start - like a month in the sun everyday, or a tanning-bed commitment. My head will tan eventually, but not for at least a month. The girlfriend gets this spray-tanning done for events like this and she has never looked "orangy" or wierd... it always looks natural on her.
Am I breaking any man-laws by considering getting spray-tanned for the wedding? I'm really curious to see what I look like outside of the kimo-head phase, and this would pretty much give me a sneak-peak. I just feel like a flamer considering it....
... and sorry for the long post... just glad to have an outlet that understands...
-
boost, glad we're here for you as an outlet. Give the spray tan a shot and let us know how it works out. Though, you'll probably want to do it after you shave and right before you go to the wedding as it could come off with a shave. check with the tanning place first.
-
I've got Lebanese and Native American ancestry so I've never had a problem tanning but I've heard good results from the spray tans. Let us know how you go with them.
A lot better than the solarium. There was a news article about a girl who is 26 and dying of melanoma. She was a rabid user of tanning beds.
Good luck with the wedding. Just remember mate, if someone doesnt accept you with your new look than they arent worth your time anyways.

Hey bro..looks good.. Im gonna have to say the same thing taht Stewy postedin an earlier post.. What have you done? You have brought yourself into a new life..one that will get better as time goes on. I am approachign my 3 month anniversary of being sly and I am diggin it like crazy man. I give you O0 O0 O0 up! Glad to hear you and the ex are tryin to make it work.....it took my wife a few weeks to like my smooth dome. THen it really went backwards when i shaved my goatee and stash off..but now I have it back and Im in good wiht her again. Keep it bro...it will get better.
