Greetings, SLY brothers, and thanks for the indispensable advice and encouragement I’ve received while lurking on this site for the past few months. I have MPB and have been grooming my cranium with a Wahl-buzz for 20 years, with ever-shorter cuts as the years and hair have gone. I’m 50 now, and I’ve been at a no-guard buzz for a couple years, and recently decided to give SLY a try.
I don’t recall any angst over the years about hair loss and have always admired bare or closely cropped heads. I suppose this is partly because of my affection for my grandfather who sported a nicely shaped bald head all the years I knew him. Over 20 years ago I married into a family with rampant balding, and it is a fact of life among my in-laws. No one tries to hide it – short clipper cuts are the rule.
A couple summers ago, a cousin who has shaved his head for years suggested I “just take it down to the skin and be done with it.†His words stuck with me and I’ve had it in the back of my mind ever since. I dragged my feet because it seemed like a lot of extra work, but the notion intrigued me. Then I found SLY Bald Guys, and the notion germinated, thanks to your insight and encouragement.
All this came together 5 weeks ago when I took razor to skull and emerged smooth and SLY. The early weeks saw bumps, zits, razor burn and second thoughts, but as time passed, things improved and I have to say that I am addicted to the feel of a smooth head.
Reactions have been a non-event, I suppose because everyone I see is accustomed to my very short buzz. None of my friends or relatives (including my mother) said a thing. At the office, none of my employees said a word. I work in health care, and see a significant number of folks each week. Only one of them said anything, and it was a compliment. One balding colleague also complimented me and said he wished he could shave it all off. (His wife dissents.)
I consider myself an ordinary-looking fellow, with an ordinary cranium, complete with some interesting lumps in the back, a few light, flat moles, scars, freckles, and a light birthmark smack-dab in the middle of the back of the melon. I’ve not found anyone giving me a second look, except for the occasional SLY guy at a stoplight – I suppose checking out my shine. My experience has led me to believe that no one gives hoot. So much for trepidation regarding the new look.
And for the fence-sitters: In addition to this wonderful website, one of the things I found encouraging when I was mulling over the SLY, is the collection of pictures of SLY guys in this gallery. Just about every head shape, coloration, and age is represented there and I found it encouraging when I obsessed about the insecurities I have about my melon.

To sum it up: I appreciate all the info, advice, and encouragement from this site and I am enjoying my new SLY look. Thanks for everything! mlnhd

Hey, welcome to SBG!!!
I think the whole "shave it and be done with it" attitude is by far the best reason to go sly.

Thanks for the cordial welcome, gents. This morning, when I saw the length of my first post in the bright light of day, I felt a bit sheepish for sending such a long one, but I guess it covered all the points I wanted to make.
I'll try to rustle up a picture soon, and then see if I can figure out how to post it.
Cheers,

O0 O0 Ahoy, MLNHD. What A congenial post. Had very similar experience, except that my 91-year-old father still has all his hair. My maternal grandfather (Johnston) suffered (?) the same male pattern baldness that I did before I decided (Nov. 1st, 2006) to preempt Mother Nature and go sly. Wife and almost all others have been positive. Doesn't matter: I am happy slick bald. Cannot imagine why I waited so long. All best, Professor Melon

Thanks again, one and all, for your congenial welcomes.
Sidenote: regarding Scott's new picture -- is there any dome out there that is more pure and pristine in appearance than that one? Great pic of a great pate!
Second sidenote: while I was running errands about town yesterday, I decided that I'd keep count of all the SLY heads I saw in the course of the day. I didn't count close buzz cuts -- only the completely smooth heads. By the end of the day I had counted seven in all, which I thought was pretty amazing, considering the less-than-leading trends of this midwest town.
Cheers,
mlnhd
