Title: Alopecia For 32 Years. Ready to Shed Wig !!!
Post by: andrew on August 25, 2007, 10:56:26 PM
I've had alopecia Totalis (no/little hair on scalp) for 32 years.   I've worn a wig the whole time and am tired of it.  My wife and daughter have been begging me to get rid of the wig for several years now but I've just not had the guts to do it.  They tell me I look much much better without it.  I have fuzz all around my head so I do have to shave it for it to look presentable. But, because I can't grow any thick hair, I can shave it really clean.

I've gone on a few vacations w/o it and love it.  I guess part of my hesitation is that I have a job that requires me to work with alot of very conservative people and I've wondered how they'd react.

Also, I'm overweight and I keep telling my wife and daughter that I have to lose weight before I can do this.  Of course I never seem to lose weight ....

I want to do it more than ever ....

Hi, Andrew.

Welcome to the group.  Many of us here work in conservative environments and none of us has encountered any problems at work due to our shaved heads.  In your case it should be even less likely to be a problem, since you really don't have very much hair to begin with.  No employer is going to force you to wear a wig.  Ditch the wig and bask in the feeling of freedom you'll experience.

The weight is a separate issue.  You may be unconsciously using it as an excuse not to get rid of the rug.   Get rid of the rug now and you'll feel a lot better about yourself.  And having solved that problem, you may be more motivated to get some pounds off.

Andrew welcome to the group.

Indeed I can imagine you may feel somewhat self-consious about not wearing the wig as it has been part of your life for over 30 years but I would encourage you to give the bald look a try, like Razor said, you will feel a newfound freedom and wish you had ditched it years ago.

andrew....welcome 2 the sbg forum.  razorx & jdog  r  totally & absolutely right.  shed the wig & give your head a good shave with a quality razor (mach3, fusion, or headblade) & give it a 30 day trial.  the 30 day trial seems 2 b the "official" time frame of a "test" run on how one is adjusting 2 their "freedom".  i  say  b  free & throw away the rug  & enjoy a fresh clean dome.  i promise u that u will find it liberating & that u will enjoy it.  anyways... keep us posted on your road 2 slyness.  u will not regret it. Andrew,

There is a man who works in my office who wears a full wig.  I see him from time to time, but don't know him.  This is a fact, not an opinion - the wig looks terrible on him.

Women offer sympathy, men offer solutions.

I will echo what you have already seen here.  Trash the wig.  Do it now.   Shave off the fuzz.  See a nutritionist.  Your health care coverage may pay for part or all of the cost.  Get a medical checkup and start an exercise program and stick to it.  Use the "ditching of the wig" as an opportunity to change your appearance and your life.   You will not regret it.

Thanks to all of the great advice and encouragement.  I know you're all right.  I just need to build up the guts to go for it.

I have a mustache now but I'm thinking that a little beard to go with it might look good.   Then a pair of sunglasses, and I'll be SLYYYYYYY .....

Couldn't agree more with that statement.  I have lost 15 lbs this summer and am back down to my fighting weight of 185 lbs and have put the gym back into my routine.  I feel and look great!! :)

The best is yet to come.

Truer words are never spoken. Now is your chance to regain control and peace of mind for yourself. I cannot begin to tell you how great it feels when you finally shave your head. Any of the brother's on here will tell you the same.
I can't imagine what it must be like to have that daily concern about your wig. It must be taxing. Take it off, get rid of it, burn it if you have to.
Then take one of the blades of choice and some gel like Warhawk said, and go shave!.
I guarantee you will feel better, like a weight has lifted. Go do it and you will see.     O0

Good luck,

Joe

Hey Andrew.  Welcome to SBG.  You've come to the right place.  I know how you feel - I was in your shoes less than 3 months ago.

I wore a wig for more than 23 years.  I am a professional - own my own business - work with the public extensively on a daily basis.  My profeesion depends on repeat business.

The last 3 years of my wig existence were absolutely horrible.  I wanted so much to have the guts to ditch the unit.  Like you, I was scared to death of what everyone else would think.  It got so bad, I would wake up at night worrying about it.

In late May of this year, I found SBG.  I secretly read and read and read the posts on here.  Finally I joined and made my first post.  It was absolutely phenomenal the support I got.

Finally, on June 8, with my 10 year old son in tow, I visited the local barber named Jack the Ripper.  I have been male pattern bald since I was 20.  I told Jack, start cutting and don't stop.  It sounds crazy but it was one of the greatest decisions I have ever made.  I was finally liberated from the unit and I knew I could not go back.

You have no idea how the weight was lifted off my shoulders.  I will not lie - going to work and seeing people for the first time was scary.  Incredibly, everyone was supportive.  Just this past week I had 2 clients come to my office that had not seen me since I went sly and both of them told me I was sexy.  Now that definitely didn't happen in the last 23 years.  In fact, one other client said I wish you would have done that years ago - you look great.

Another colleague has told me on more than one occasion how good it looks and told me, it took b@lls to do what you did.  I finally figured out people liked me for who I was, not because I did or didn't have hair.  I took control of my life.

All I can say is go for it.  I promise you that it will be the lifting of  a heavy burden.  If you have gone on vacation without it and liked it, just think how much you will like it full time.  You are like me  - a bald guy trapped under a wig.  Release the trap and be free.  I can't imagine why I didn't do this years ago.

I know there are some other guys on here who wore a unit who can give you advice.  However, if I can help you in any way, feel free to send me a message.  Good luck my man.

Sooner Steve

I'm not sure what I would tell everyone after showing up sly ...   I guess I wouldn't be lying if I said I shaved my head but the reality is that I ditched the rug, which I'm sure they'd know.   I suppose the best way to smooth it out is to joke about it, one way or another ....

That was a GREAT story SoonerSteve.  I do appreciate your taking the time to share that.

I went away 2 weeks ago, and yanked it while away.  Going away again in 2 weeks and am planning to do it again.  This gives me a chance to notice reactions while not dealing with the people I know.

I really want to go for it, permanently....

O0 Dear Andrew: yes, tell the truth, joke about it, and talk going sly up as much as possible. The others will immediately grow bored/indifferent and never bring up the subject again. It means much more to you than to anyone else.  Freedom from the rug-and-rip-off should far outweigh your fear of possible peer disapproval. Been there. When I fell on Memorial Day, suffered a gash on the dome that required 15 stitches, and could not shave my head for 10 days, I was truly miserable and appreciated how closely identified with my bald image I now am. Never wore a piece, but spent many years on supplements and spraying thinning hair into place, always afraid of a gust of wind or convertible. Your anxiety should drop off as you go about life as what you are, what God (or nature) intended you to be. Let us know how it goes. All best, Professor Melon

Andrew.  IF they ask, tell them the truth.  It is amazing for me - I thought all these years I was fooling the majority of people and that no one knew I was wearing a rug.  I was only fooling myself.  You have no idea how many people actually knew.  I was the only one getting fooled.  Invariably, those people that did know will say something like, "I love your new look - you should have done that years ago."  Those that didn't know about the rug - I just let them tell me how great my new look is.

I had a meeting with some long time clients this morning.  They had not seen me since my change.  However, I had gathered by certain comments that they had made in the past that they knew my "secret".  The first thing they did (they are sisters) when they saw me was tell me how great I looked.  Great ego boost.

If someone doesn't like the change - so what.  BUT I GUARANTEE YOU WILL GET A 99% POSITIVE REACTION FROM PEOPLE.  AND WHO DOESN'T LIKE TO GET A GOOD COMPLIMENT.

As said by others, truth is the best policy.  I like myself better this way - and isn't that what is important?

One last thing I meant to add.  You say you are going to try it again with no hair in 2 weeks.

Let me tell you this.  Before I went sly, when I went to the mall or out to eat I was constantly looking everyone in the eye wondering if they were looking at my hair.  If someone did make eye contact with me I was in panic.  It was very irritating.

The first time I went to the mall after going sly, I did the same thing.  Amazingly, very few people even looked twice at me.  It was a wonderful feeling.

I can guarantee you this - right now every time you walk by a mirror in the mall or a restaurant, you automatically look in it to see if the rug is on straight and in the proper place.  Am I right?  That's the way I was.  Once I went sly, I don't worry about a mirror anywhere.

In fact, I even bought an Avalanche with a SUNROOF - talk about nice - no worrying if the wind is blowing now.  Look dude, freedom is there for you.  Go for it.

I don't want to sound like a freak but I am very passionate about this.  Especially when I learn of a hairpiece wearer that is going through the same things I went through.  It is miserable and I don't want anyone to go there.

Best of luck.

I would imagine that there a number of potential problems associated with wearing a full wig (as opposed to a toupee), which is what I assume you wear since you have alopecia.  The first one I can think of is that your hair never changes length or looks like it needs to be cut -- which is a big giveaway.  At least with a toupee, you still have some natural hair which will grow and add some degree of plausibility (though a toupee doesn't really fool anyone either) .

The other thing I can think of is that eventually you have to start getting wigs with increasing amounts of grey in them.  You didn't say how old you are, but even if you've been wearing a wig since early childhood, if it's been 32 years, the grey issue is something you'll need to address in the not-too-distant future.

Whatever anxiety you may feel about getting rid of the wig will be short-lived and more than offset by the feeling of liberation you'll feel once it is gone.

Post by: andrew on August 27, 2007, 01:54:19 PM
All of those problems exist, and more ...  I'm in my late 40's and don't have a single gray in there, which of course isn't quite right.   Another issue I'm faced with is that the wig-maker I've dealt with for the last 27 years is dying of cancer, which really sucks. Poor guy has been so good to me over the years ....    So, this is just another factor influencing me to go for it sooner rather than later ....

Recently, while on vacation in-the-sly, I went under-water in the pool. I'd not done that in 5 years (my first vacation in-the-sly) and before then it had been 20+ years.

SoonerSteve - you hit it on the head again with the mirror thing and the wind effect.   Man I can't wait to rip this beaver hat off my head ....

I've gotten a taste of it while vacationing and will get another taste next week.  One advantage (the only) of the full wig is I can be fully-shaven benieth and be sly-for-the-weekend before going back to my misery.   After doing it a few weeks ago on vacation it was pure torture sticking that rag on my head afterward.

I wore a wig for 7 yrs and can't tell how much I wish I went sly sooner. The initial feeling was nerve racking, but since then I can't regret a day I have been shaving. It is common now, but standing out is great because you will always be noticed. You have nothing to lose and much to gain.

Andrew, I think the important thing to remember is that all the things that make you a decent human being, such as virtue, integrity, tolerance, love, honesty, devotion, and honesty are a part of you whether you are covering your head with something or not.  Those who know you, appreciate you, respect you, or love you, do so because of these attibutes, not because of your "hair."  And when you "come clean," the same folks who stood beside you because of who and what you are will be standing beside you just the same, albeit perhaps squinting a bit in the glare.  ^-^ Those closest to you will be happy for you, and those a bit farther away will not matter.

I think you'll be amazed by how empowering it will be to park the hair and get on with  living life!  GO FOR IT!

Cheers,

Hey Guys...

I'm going away on vacation this weekend (Friday morning) and intending to go sly.  I've kept up on my shaving beheath this wig, so I can go sly on-demand.  Did it a few weeks ago when away for the weekend and really loved it.

I've been growing a goat for over a week and it's filling in nicely.  My wife likes the way it looks when I'm sly and not so much with the wig on.

I can't wait to rip this thing off this weekend and give my sly life another test-drive.  I'm hoping to make this permanent sometime soon.

My wife, who has been encouraging me to go sly for several years, has been very surprised at how much more open-minded I've become to slyness, since becoming involved with this forum.

Thanks for all the help guys ....

Andrew, this is it, your chance to go sly full time! While on vacation make it a point to shave every day, and don't think about putting on the wig.
It's a good time to just be free of all the pressure and just enjoy yourself, swimming especially!.
Go for it!, you say the wife is behind you with the goat and the slick dome, so what could hold you back?
Shave it all off, toss the wig and be free from here on.
As you can see, all of the guys are behind you too, and I guarantee you will feel such a sense of freedom. You'll soon be saying what we all have said afterward: " I should have done this sooner".
Good luck and enjoy your (sly) vacation!   :)

Had a great time on vacation, completely sly, and decided to make this permanent.  I never would have made this decision w/o all of the support and encouragement from you guys.   My wife has been bugging me to go sly for a few years, and mentions that it only took you guys 2 weeks.

Called my daughter on the way home and she's pissed off at me.  I'll have to work through that with her, but I think she'll come around.  Stopped at my mother's house on the way home and she loved it.  More importantly, my wife loves it.

So, tomorrow is going to be a BIG SHOCKER at work.  Not really looking forward to that, but I'm eager to get beyond it.  I'm also eager for all my friends and family to see it.  Then, I'm in the clear ....

Thanks again to everyone .....

Andrew

Yeah, Andrew!  Congrats!  Tomorrow when you go to work, just remember who you're doing this for:  YOU and  not the folks you work with.  I'm sure there will be a flurry of attention and comments...for about a day or two.  Courage, brother!

Please post a report on your first day back AND a pic!

Best Wishes,

MLNHD

Andrew this is great to hear! I'm glad you made the leap to fully sly.

I hope your newfound slyness brings you much happiness and freedom.

Awesome Andrew.  I new you would do it.  Just remember what MLNHD said, you did this for you - not for the people at work.  And the fact that your wife loves it makes it that much better.  Your daughter will come around.  She will see how happy and relaxed you are and she will support you.  I guarantee it.   O0

Well, I'm at work now and the big unveiling was much more uneventful than I expected.  All of the women said it looked really good and a guy that I work with asked a few questions and then moved on.

My daughter made a big fuss last night but seemed to be focused on herself this morning while I was bringing her to school.   So at least for the moment, she seems to be coming around.

I'm loving this ...

You are the man, Andrew.  I am so excited for you.  It brings back memories of my unveiling.  Scary as hell yet invigorating because I knew then I was in control of things.

I'll never forget when my 13 year daughter saw me for the first time - she looked at my head very suspiciously and finally  said,  "well, it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would."  Then all of her friends thought it was cool so she came around in no time.  Not a bad "compliment" from a 13 year old.  I'm sure your daughter will see a happier you.

Congrats again.  Choice well made.

Keep us updated on how the day goes.

Congrats, Andrew! Good to hear your first day went well, pretty much a non-event like most guys said, right?. Glad you are enjoying the new "free" you.
Keep us posted on how it goes and if you have any questions, etc.

Did you burn the wig yet? lol.      ;D

Way to go Andrew O0   Glad this is a positive experience for you.  We could have told you that work would be pretty much a non-event.  Continue to enjoy the new look and the new freedom.    AND DON"T BURN THAT RUG.   After all, Halloween IS coming ;D

Actually, I already told my daughter I was going to make a scare crow for halloween and put that nasty rug on top ....  that would scare more than crows.

After a really good FIRST DAY SLY, my day ended on a very positive note.  Upon locking my office and starting to walk out to my car, I crossed paths with the hottest girl in our building.  She stopped me, telling me how great it looks, then told me all about her brother, who is sly.  Then, she said she thinks "a shaved head with a goatee is really sexy" and gently elbowed me in the side.    Wow, I wasn't prepared for that ....

I love being sly already ....

Trust me, you will continue to get those types of compliments.  It does wonders for the ego and self confidence.  As I always say, why didn't I do this years ago.

Sly Day 2
=======
Didn't run into too many additional people today at work, although I just ran into the one gay dude that works in our building.  He said "It looks great.  I love it.  Are you going riding a hog yet?"

Well, I'm glad to get a compliment, but this was a little over the edge ....

Andrew, congrats!  As for the gay dude giving you a compliment, as a straight guy, I would just take it as a compliment and that he thought you have the image of a biker.  One time I was in a bar with a buddy of mine and we started talking to these two women.  My bud, Lou, who is now sly, look real rugged even with the fringe.  I was sly back then myself.  But both women asked what kind of motorcycles we ride.  So I think that bald, especially sly masculine looking men can look like they are bikers.  I took that as a compliment.  But we had to tell the truth and let them know that we didn't have a motorcycle!

Andrew it is very heartening to hear how you are enjoying your Slyness bro. I can only imagine after 30 years of wearing a hairpiece how hard it must have been for you to make the decision but you did and you 've gotten some great compliments for it.

I hope your life continues to go nowhere but up.

Shine on bro.

Thanks alot JDog and all of you guys .....    I'd never have done this if I hadn't discovered SBG.  My wife comments about how she bugged me to go sly for 2 years and then it only took you guys 2 weeks to get me to go for it.

Yesterday when I was getting in my car a guy pulls up to me and rolls down his window.  He said "didn't you have a full head of hair last week?"   Well, apparantly, he didn't notice the rug ....  He was balding big-time and had his hair somewhat buzzed.  He said "I should do that", and of course I encouraged him ....

Right on Andrew,Spread the word.

Guys like you will encourage other men who may have been in your position to make the leap and go Sly and realize the freedom it gives you. No more being a puppet to the fallacy that is hair.

Post up often and keep us in the loop.

Andrew,

I can see why the gay dude asked if you were going to get a hog.  With the sunglasses, you look like someone I wouldn't want to mess with.  But I know appearances can be decieving.  As for the weight, only loose it because you want to improve your health.  I struggle with weight.  But other than that, your sly look is great.  Let's now see a "before" pic with the wig!

My Uncle is 54 years old and combs his hair from the front to cover the bald patch. I have told him a few times to get rid of it. He won't do it because he works in a very customer facing environment and is involved in journalism so reckons it doesn't work. I think it might be from the generation he comes from.

As you know, it's all in his head that the comb-over looks better than the sly look.   I'm sure his customers would prefer to see him with a clean slick head, rather than a 2-foot swatch of hair coiled over his bald spot.

Andrew, I just came in at the end of your story here.
The guy said to you, didn't you have a full head of hair last week.
So you axed a toupe? Good for you dude!

I have to say I can't even picture SLY Andrew with a full head of hair.
The SLY-ness really suits you. And those new glasses complete the totally SLY look. Way to go!

Thanks alot guys ....   While I do feel pretty comfortable with this after 3 weeks, I still have moments of awkwardness.

Andrew:  I think all of us former hairpiece/toupee/wig wearers will always have our anxious moments.  The reason - we have been conditioned over the years (23 in my case - 30+ in yours) to have those anxious moments because we wore a wig.  We were always wondering if was smoothed down in the back, was someone looking at us wrong, was someone in a restaurant laughing at our hair or just their general conversation, worrying about meeting a new person and wondering if they could figure out our little secret, etc.

That has been going on in our mind since the day we put it on.  It is a hard habit to break after so many years.  I still have a few anxious moments.  Then I think about all those times since I went topless that I have not had to worry about all of those instances listed in the preceding paragraph.

As a former rug wearer to another - we made the best decision.  Stay strong and enjoy.

Sooner Steve

Andrew, if you read my story, you and I had a similar experience. Just 4 days ago I shaved my head after wearing a hairpiece for 15 years. I am very happy with my decision, and more importantly my new look.
