Post by: herronm on August 23, 2007, 07:57:58 PM

We don't have a spell checker...LOL

So, I'm curious as to how the one at home works!

Actually, if you have the Google toolbar setup on your home computer, then you have a spell checker.

You have a tool bar 3rd party program other than your web broswer that checks spelling. On your work computer if your company is half smart they'll lock the thing down to the max to prevent you from installing items on your computer.

some companies will go the extent to have in their contract you will be fired and or charged if you do anything to disrupt the work machine.

I was working with a customer on his Windows XP issue and never thought to ask about his prilvages at work any way we disconnected him from his domain. And i'm not sure how to connect to the domain once the connect has been broken.... anyway, he called back in with his HR rep, Direct supervisor , IT personel and the over all boss of company/building (not sure which). They tracked me down, and we had to have a discussion with myself and my senior tech, to make sure that my intentions were pure and that he did not know what he was doing.

Was going to lose his 6 figure salary...... and i didn't even get a damn christmas card from the guy.

OK, I did some checking and decided I'm not crazy after all.  I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.6.  In the Options/Advanced tab, there is a check spelling button.

Works gr8 by the way (Warhawk that was 4 U).

Perhaps Paul and I should teach a few lessons in the lost art of writing a coherent paragraph!

This leads me to a topic RazorX and I recently discussed.  Does Spell Check and similar programs improve or erode our ability to spell?

I don't see how it could do anything BUT erode spelling ability.  High school students today are already some of the poorest spellers in this countrys history by the daily examples I see.     It may also fall in line with some info I gained at a recent graduate course in Speech and Language.   It seems that as a result of constant use of computer and text messaging, handwriting is seriously declining to the point that many students cannot even read cursive writing.  Seems spelling would go the same way for similar reasons.

WOW!!!  i hope that my "special" messages using "text-like" words  r  not offending anyone.  this is NOT a high school english class or an assignment that we have 2 turn in &  b  graded.  i assure 2 u all that i am a very capable speller.  i was always either in the top 3 when it came 2 spelling in grammar, jr. high, & high school.  i always made A's & B's in english classes.  i always made good grades on my term papers & research papers in school.  like  i said if  u  ever  c  me writing whole words on my posts than its either i have been #1 kidnapped, #2murdered, or #3 very sick.  and if #1 or #2 has happened... please send the fbi  2 florida 2 help with the investigation.  this  site is supposed 2  b  fun but if my "text-like" posts continue 2 b offensive than i  will leave this forum.   my "text-like" ways is my "personality" when i post on this forum or when i write 4 fun BUT if this were a business letter or college term paper than:  I would write in whole words and sentences.   anyways.. just my 2 cents.

Hawk - this is not aimed at you; rather at the concept in general of spelling and appropriate usage of the Queen's Tongue.

The funny thing is that I actually read this correctly the first time.  I had to go back and look at the words to realize you scrambled them.

Hey Warhawk,

As I think (hope) I made clear in earlier posts, I am NOT offended by your 'shortcuts.'  I was just kidding around before, saying that they drove me nuts, etc.  In a way they do ; but ... It is just one of those quirky, endearing things that friends to that make them unique.  So don't change; I'd b disappointed 2  c you writing in the 'normal' way.

composing in word is always a good route, but adds a little bit more time.  I use for almost all my post the spell checker in my Google toolbar.  It is build in and all seamless with ie for for me.  I also like that it recognizes a lot of the 'new' English that has come from instant msg.

Which is why you should run those kinds of things off a flash drive. IE: Firefox portable, Opera etc.
