Title: Just for Men beard dye sucks, but...
Post by: Rusty Shackleford on December 02, 2015, 01:49:27 PM
I used Just for Men beard dye in the past and found it to be pointless since it will wash out in a week or two.  I gave up using it, but I've been getting sick and tired of my irregular graying pattern and how the weird irregular hairs love to be the white ones that stand out like crazy against the dark ones.  I ended up getting a bottle of Just for Men hair dye and this stuff actually seems permanent.  I treated my beard with it 4 weeks ago and the brown is still brown.  This is the first time I've dyed my beard that I have an issue with the roots coming in gray since the other stuff washed out long before the gray roots became noticeable.

The way the hair dye works is that it comes in two bottles and you dump one bottle into the other, shake it up, and then squirt it into the beard.  The liquid is thick so it does not run out.  In contrast the beard dye comes in two tubes and you mix together on a plastic tray and then apply with a small brush.

When it comes to cost the hair dye is cheaper but is packaged for all of it to be used at once while the beard dye comes in tubes which makes it easy to use small amounts for touch-up purposes.

I have had success with using hair dye as well, and you can mix equal amounts in a third container and save the unused and unmixed left overs.  As long as the containers are sealed back and it has not been mixed, it will last long enough for a second application.  I was using a ladies hair color that was lower cost than the JFM, and included a large quantity of dye.

I have since switched back to the JFM "Touch of Gray" hair (not beard) color.  I like the results better since it is not complete coverage, but it does not last very long.

Well I wish I could do it the other way round.  I wish I could make it all white instead of the multicolor and patches that it is.

There are guys who bleach their beards white to play Santa Claus.  It's a pretty unpleasant experience and not good for the skin or hair but it can be done. Not that I recommend it.   ;)

Right, bleaching your beard doesn't work.  It just turns yellow and BURNS your skin!

(Been there, done that, got the T-Shirt)

So it's been about 6 weeks and the real Just for Men hair dye is still going strong, but the roots were showing pretty fierce so I decided to see if I could mix up just a little bit for touchups.  It was actually pretty easy, but the only problem is that I decided to get the light blonde since this stuff tends to dye darker than you think.  I mixed it up and it had hardly any color and really had no impact after being applied.  The process went pretty smooth however, and I project that a bottle will last for several touchups, but my color choice just didn't seem to work.

I tried the blond for the same reason and found it did not work at all.  And the darker shades made my beard too dark, especially when I had to reapply it more often because it faded within a few days.  That was the beginning of the end for me.  It was just too difficult to get a consistent good result so I reluctantly just stopped.

Were you using the Just for Men Beard & Mustache dye?  If so that stuff is pathetic the way it washes out so fast.

Yes.  When I first started using it it seemed like it lasted longer. I don't know if the formula changed or if an increasing amount of grey made its shortcomings more obvious.  I had to reapply more often and it made my beard look too dark.  My beard is so grey now I don't think I could keep up with it. Mother Nature wins again.

I tried the the light brown JFM Beard & Mustache about two years ago just to see if it would take the "edge" off the gray. It actually blended in well with the darker brown natural color, but I am glad I decided to drop it after it washed out for the twentieth or so time and just stick with what I am.

Everybody comes to terms with it on his own timetable -- just like some people shave their heads completely at the first sign of thinning while others take it shorter in stages.  We all get there in the end.  There's nothing wrong to using a product to conceal a few grey hairs if you're not ready to deal with the issue yet.   :)

My natural hair colour is pretty non descript It's not blonde, it's not dark, it's just meh. When I fist started growing my beard it just wasn't strong enough to carry off the extra length, The first time I grew my beard I went too dark and I think I've now found a colour I'm happier with. I don't have a lot of grey in my beard and would be happy to have a grey beard but when the colour beds in and there's some grey in my beard I like how it looks.

And to respond to the "get a grip and be yourself comment"   I find that quite a closed comment and probably got my back up far more than I should have let it. People that are that judgemental are not worth rising to.

Any pics Rusty

Based on your picture you shave your head, shave your cheeks, and trim your goatee.  I also imagine you have used modern medical and dental care, and from what I remember of history things like computers, phones, and digital cameras are not the product of nature.  Is clothing natural? Are tattoos natural? Are you living natural?   :popo

Humans have minds.  The huge benefit of what we are is that we can live lives beyond what nature stuck us with.  Right now the mixed colors look bad so I am correcting it, someday I might let it all be its natural color... if it's solid white but I might tint it light brown or blonde if it ends up a true gray. Maybe I'll try green on St. Patty's who knows?  All I know is that I'm not going to say "oh it's not natural so I'll just stick with what I've got".

For the record, I'm not writing this to sound like a big giant douche towards you  :) but I am trying to sound like a big giant douche to this social cliche that elevates the word "Natural" on a pedestal such that it is never to be questioned.  It stops thought.  It stops imagination.  It paralyzes ambition.

Guys, no harm intended when i posted what i did. If it came across harsh, i apologise.

Just i have seen so many guys use dyes in hair and beards and they almost 'always' look so out of normal! You can see it is a dye so obviously. I hardly ever see any that look 'natural'.

It's all good!  O0  I'm not a millennial so I don't need to run off to a safe space when someone has a differing opinion.   :*))

Also much of my response went off on a tangent on broader things that you only touched upon.  Tangents.  I do that.

Like this one!  I think one of the problems with hair dying in general is that people often go to an extreme: we've all probably seen formerly brown-haired women who have gone gray so they dye their hair black.

Something to bear in mind when dyeing your beard is that it looks different under different lighting conditions, so how it appears in the mirror in your brightly lit bathroom may be completely different to how it looks in natural lighting.  And it will look different in bright sunshine vs an overcast day.  And at night time in dimly lit rooms the dyed parts can take on an almost glow-in-the-dark look.   Something I noticed when I was using JFM.  And I thInk that may be one reason why someone might think he's got a great dye job but it looks odd to everyone else who sees it in a different environment.

Boot polish?  Wouldn't that get all over the place like on your pillow and clothing or onto your fingers and then onto everything else?
