Since my Army days, and where I began to see signs of balding, I have been hiding under a hat. I broke all hat etiquette rules and this would not sit well especially with my mother as she would look across the table at a restaurant seeing me sporting my weathered Under Armour cap. Two days ago I decided to shave my " Achilles heel" off. I have attached two photos. One showing how I hid and one where I am hiding no longer. There is a certain absurdity that comes to being so attached to our hair. For one, women actually don't give a sh*t on a whole and if we live our lives just to avoid judgement we might as well live in a bunker. I thank all the positive guys on this site and have not read a single negative comment. Honest frankness is appreciated.

Welcome, David!
Nice way to share your story. I don't know how badly you were balding, but you seem more happier in the picture with the shaved head. Again, welcome and participate often!

Hi David, you have a good looking bald head! Congratulations on joining us head shavers. Never wore hats much, as I had a full head of hair, but never wear a hat now, unless it's -20 degrees outside. Love to show off my smooth shiny dome.

Thanks guys. Sir Harry, I had a pretty significant receding hairline, slowly making its way back to meet up with his brother, bald patch, and his travels have been getting shorter each year. I have had a shaved head before but that was primarily because it was the job I was in. To purposefully shave your head and sport it with confidence, is very empowering. I think that shows in my second photo.

It looks really good! Congratulations on making the move!

Congratulations on taking control and on having such an excellent attitude.
Welcome to the board!

Smooth is a good style for you! O0

Twin brother to Vin Diesel. Bold new look. No need for a hat.

Nice dome. Congrats on making the change.

Looking good w/the bald head! But then again we're all partial to slick heads! Lol. I too used to wear hats ALL the time. I was always self conscious about my thinning hair, it began to be a problem when I had to 'strategically' fix my hair to cover them up. After shaving my head it was like a weight lifted off 'exhilarating' really. Now I wouldn't have it any other way! I often look at people that have hair and wonder what the point is! Haha. The only weird thing, since shaving my head I can't wear baseball hats as they give me headaches! Weird I know!

Looking good with a bald head, man!
The thing about hiding baldness is that everyone usually knows that you're hiding baldness! Make peace with it and move on! O0

A collective thanks to all of you for your support. My family's reaction during Thanksgiving should be priceless. I was going to wait until after the holidays to shave my head but I realized that this was a wimpy approach for sure.

Oh Man do I wish that I could introduce you to my buddy in San Diego. He has been hiding under a hat for 40 years - no lie, 40 Years!!!! The few times I have ever seen him take it off in his life he has this deathly white scalp that has never seen or felt the beauty of sunlight that sticks out like a sore thumb. I have tried every way, both tactful and blunt, to get him to escape from the confinement of that hat. But he chooses to remain in that prison.

Good luck David, family will be your worst critics. Just walk in like you just got the best haircut ever. After over 2.5 years since I started shaving my head, there are only 2 people that still can't get used to it. They are friends that knew me as a longhaired teenager.
Have you gotten the slight nod from other head shavers yet. I love the bald guy acknowledgement!

I drive a Jeep and get the thumbs up and slight nod from other Jeep owners. Yesterday I got a slight nod from another Jeep owner who was bald. It's a trip.
This morning I went on FaceTime with my sister and forgot about my bald head. . She said "Oh my gosh you are bald, I love it. ". That's two family members down, three to go.

Good to hear, David!
I always think of Tom Selleck when we talk about shaving our heads. Tom Selleck is a great looking guy, but I cannot get used to him not having a mustache. I'm just so used to the mustache.
Probably my kids think he looks fine, because they aren't used to the mustache.
People are just most comfortable with whatever they're used to, in most cases. I'm glad your sister has an open mind!

I have worn a hat most of my life and even after shaving my head for the last month, I still wear my hat. It depends on how cool the hat is, I guess.

You look good bald. And welcome to the club b

You like much more confident without the hat. The hat is not a bad look, but it's a boyish look. You're too old for that.
I did the hat thing myself for way too long. I wore it inside nice restaurants and committed many social faux pas before coming to my senses. It got to the point were it was effecting my social life. Taking off my hat was the most freeing thing I've ever done. Congratulations on reclaiming your manhood.
I'm not opposed to a cool hat once in a while, but I see guys in their 40s and 50s wearing ball caps glued to their heads -- pathetic.
-
I think the bald looks natural on you.
I would say you can still wear a hat, since people with hair wear hats as well, just don't hide under it and remove confidently when needed (like sitting down for dinner, etc).

I have never been a hat person. Since shaving i like to show off my bald dome. However when playing tennis I usually wear a cap as protection from the sun - Australia has one of the worst rates of skin cancer inthe world. It is 38 Celsius today -100F - so I am staying indoors.
