Title: Shaved it clean
Post by: nomoore on August 14, 2015, 09:04:00 PM
So Sunday night I finally shaved it clean. I started by trimming down to a 1 with my Wahl trimmer. I didn't like the way it looked (I think it was uneven) so I trimmed it down with no guard. Then I was like "I've gone this far so I may as well shave it." I head lathered with my soap and brush and shaved with my DE I use for my face. And what a crumby job I did! That particular razor ('20s Gillette Tech) tends to be finicky about the angle. I should have known better and used my '40s Super Speed. Anyway, so I did a crumby job with my DE so I popped the foil attachment on my trimmer and got it mostly smooth. That was the first time I used that attachment and it wasn't half bad. I have attached pics of me about 12 hours later. I had quite a bit of redness and irritation from it all.

On Tue morning I shaved again, this time with the Super Speed, and it came out much better. I think I have some ingrown hairs though, maybe from the foil shaver? Anyway, I still have some learning to do if I want to keep it clean shaven. But I haven't shaved since Tuesday morning (it is now Fri night) and I'm kind of liking the look of a few days growth.

Not a bad job! I know that you said that you would never grow a beard, but would you consider a goatee? As far as the bumps/ingrown hairs, Bump Patrol is great for healing them within 72 hours, or if you don't mind the higher price, Tend Skin is pretty fast in clearing up ingrown hairs and bumps. All in all, it's still a great improvement from your earlier photos.

My wife definitely didn't like it. It will take her a while to get used to it.

It is very common for wives and family to not like it at first, they need time to adjust.

You are looking stout with your head shaved. I'm willing to bet if you try the 30 day rule you'll never go back to hair again. Your wife will come around. Mine did and she's uber critical of a lot of things. Welcome to the club.

I haven't shaved it since Tuesday and I am having an issue with acne on my scalp. I thought it was ingrown hairs but now I'm not so sure. Upon close inspection I don't see the usual hair sticking out of them. I'm thinking it might be from my CPAP mask straps (I have sleep apnea). I think I'm going to go buy a do-rag or skull cap of some sort to wear under the straps. I don't want to razor shave it again until this clears up. I will keep it trimmed close though. I have a clipper with a 1\16in guard.

My wife likes the current 5 day growth much better than razor shaved. I'm not sure yet which way I like better. In my opinion the current 5 day growth makes my scalp look a little gray, which I don't like. But my wife says she doesn't notice the gray tint.

Buying a do-rag or skull cap may not be a bad idea. Over time, most of us don't wash our bedwear often enough, and the sweat and dirt can easily get into the pores of a shaved head especially if you are new to head shaving. I know your wife says she doesn't like it (at least not now), but that is what the 30-day rule is for. Good luck!

Whether you opt for shaving or the equivalent of a few day's growth is really up to you.  You've made the big step now, and that is what's important.  While I prefer to shave every day, it's certainly not a requirement, and I tend to agree with what some others have said that shaving every few days produces a possibly more satisfying shave.
