I got my first ever "hot towel head shave" with a straight razor today. Quite nice to have your head massaged and wow what a close shave. I haven't been able to get it this close with my DE razor but maybe with practice I will. Here's a couple of pics take shortly after the 45 minute head shave.
Freshly shorn

With my wife who said for the first time since I started shaving my head "That looks good!"

Looks good! I bet it feels good too. Nice pictures.

Nice pictures! Glad you enjoyed the experience.
On a side note, you now bear resemblance to Rick, the guy from "Pawn Stars" that is the spokesperson for the Microtouch one blade razor!

Your dome looks great Cellison. I like the goatee as well. You look great with both. I like getting a straight razor head shave as well with the tot towel and warm lather every once in awhile. Great pictures. Your look suits you well. Enjoy.

I got a gift certificate to an upscale male barbershop for Christmas. I'm taking my brother next weekend for the two of us to get some straight shaves on the domes.
My first straight is in the mail right now, so I'll be attempting to do them myself soon...

Let me know how your first straight razor head shave goes. I have wanted to try it myself but have heard there is a big leaning curve to do so.

I plan to go slowly. Start with my face (which is hopefully pretty straight forward with the goatee) and make sure I have a good comfort level with my grip, pressure, and angle before moving onto the head. Even then, I'll probably start with the top and sides and finish the back with a DE for a while.

I'm interested to hear how it goes as well. I'm just getting the hang of a DE so straight razor is not in my foreseeable future. :)
Isn't it interesting to think that everyone whom I've met in the last 30 days since I started shaving my head doesn't know me any other way? :)

Even if I had the equipment, I know I lack the dexterity to try such a thing.
Hope it goes well for you, sir.

Is your brother Sly also?

Yep. He started around 30 as well, but he's in construction so he wears hats a lot and doesn't shave as regularly.

Where did you get your headshave? You are the first one that said it was smooth. Several of us have gotten barbershop headshaves, but not very smooth.

Reddog sir, it's a certain way that you have to do it to get it baby butt smooth. When I do straight razor headshaves mine come out smooth as ever. It's basically about your technique! Here's some pics of my straight razor shaves I've done. https://www.flickr.com/photos/derristhebarber/15279708873/ (https://www.flickr.com/photos/derristhebarber/15279708873/) and https://www.flickr.com/photos/derristhebarber/15893017260/ (https://www.flickr.com/photos/derristhebarber/15893017260/)

Derris, it's because the barbers I went to for a headshave only go with the grain. Someday I will go to the Art of Shaving at the Mall of America. They go the extra mile, but you will have to pay a lot.

Hi reddog,
I went to a place called Tommy Gun's here in Ottawa. The lady that shaved my head with a straight razor first did a full shave with the grain, then another full shave against the grain. Total time was about 45 minutes. Now that I'm getting more proficient with my DE razor I think I can get about 90% as close a shave at home.

It looks good, Cellison. I went to two different barbers, and they only shaved with the grain. Either they were afraid to cause some irritation, or they just don't want to spend the extra time. Both times there were customers waiting. One charged $15, one charged $21.
-
Looks amazing, I will have to have a proper barber head shave at some point I think.

Maybe that's the difference... my head shave cost $45. :o

You should definitely give it a try Mike. I'm not used to being pampered but I liked it!

Oh ok Reddog sir. I go the extra mile too haha. I usually go against the grain with my straight razor shaves plus it's only $10! Plus it's smooth, razor burn free , and bump free! Can't beat that deal haha!
