Title: Before and after... should i keep it shaved?
Post by: cellison on February 01, 2015, 07:00:00 PM
Hello all, new guy here.

I decided to shave my head a few days ago. Here are some before and after pics.

My wife does not like it at all but I told her I'm going to shave it every day for 30 days and see if she (and I) get used to it. I have shaved my head a few times in the past but always let it grow back right away to keep her happy. I doubt she'll decide she likes it after 30 days but if I still do I'm keeping it :)

I've never found a hairstyle I like and have what I like to call "cock-a-doodle-don't" look when my hair gets even a bit long. I'm not into hair gels etc so I figured I'd just get rid of it all. To be honest I really like the feeling of a bare scalp.

I realize bald doesn't suit everyone and have the option of going back to having hair so I'll just stick it out for 30 days and decide.

Welcome!

I think that the sly look fits you well. However, I think your goatee was too good to shave off. That goatee would have complemented your shaved head well. That said, the glasses are a nice touch! Give your wife time, she may get used to it in 30 days.

I agree with Sir Harry, grow back the goatee or some facial hair to offset the sly dome.  It does take some time for wives to adjust, likely more than 30 days.

Thanks for the comments guys. The goatee has been gone for a while, I have very sensitive skin and every time I grow a goatee it itches like crazy and I end up shaving it off. Maybe I'll try it again but keep it a lot shorter.

Shaved but grow the face fur back.  8) There are beard balms that you might try to alleviate the itching.

I see what you meant by the phrase; "Cock a doodle don't".

Absolutely! Sly is you!  You look great!

You can test fly a short goatee if you would like to, ( I keep my beard trimmed very short), but I think that you look just fine without it.  You look so much better clean cut than you did with the unruly hair and beard.

I don't think that you think about going back to the old look - even if your wife wants you to.  You definitely look a lot better now!

Looks great, you should have kept the goatee, the itching should pass, if not there are balms etc that will help.

I like the smooth bald feel too. 30 day rule is a really good deal.  Most people can adjust to your new look in that much time.

I'm BBC too!

As you can see in the profile pictures of all of the guys who have responded to your original post, facial hair works with a bald head.  My experience with itching was the it usually lasts less than 1 week, at about 2 weeks into facial hair.  That was over 30 years ago, as I've had my beard that long.

I'm on day 5 (shaved last Wednesday) and figure I'll use the end of February as the 30 day mark. So far I'm loving it and have no intention of stopping. One thing I hadn't considered is that my wife is getting used to it faster than I am since as she puts it "I see it more". I don't look in the mirror that often so I guess she has a point.

As per suggestions by almost all of you I'm growing out a goatee. Time will tell if I can get past the itch this time. :)

Great photo.  The bald noggin looks good.  My wife never complained about the bald head because I did it gradually, but did have a lot to say about the facial hair.  They do come around though.  My wife doesn't complain about my beard anymore.  In fact, I occassionally get a compliment  ;)

I don't know what you look like without facial hair but from your avatar I'd say it suits you quite well.

My wife says a goatee makes me look old since there's a lot of white hair in it. Oh well, I will be 53 shortly so I guess it makes me look my age :)

I'm 51 and I think with facial hair, I look my age. I look younger without the facial hair, but I like it, so most of the time I have a goatee or some sort of beard.

The facial hair itch can last from a few days to a couple of weeks.  It never lasted more than a couple of days for me.  Sometimes the itch can continue due to keeping it trimmed to short stubble length.

I just truned 53 myself.  Since I went sly, most people think I look younger - but that was not my motivation for going sly.  I was never happy with my hair, it was always difficult to style and seemed like I never got a good haircut (one that looked good and was easy to maintain).  I mostly just kept a short traditional hairstyle since my hair was never the type for whatever was the trendy hairstyle at the time.

Keep the bald and grow the goatee or a full beard.  I think there is a majority consensus here.

Day 6 and still going strong! I'm liking it more every day. I don't think it's going to take 30 days for me to make the decision :)

Goatee is starting to come in.

wow Mike, except for the grey in your beard I would have never guessed that you are in your 50's!  But now that you mention it; why don't you test fly going clean shaven?  I'll bet you would look a lot younger!

Thanks guys, I've never shaved this many days in a row before and I think my scalp is starting to adapt. I am less shocked every day when I see myself in the mirror. :)

I went out for coffee tonight with my wife and one of her friends from work whom I'd only met once a couple of weeks ago pre-head shave. Her first words were "I LOVE your new look. It suits you so well!". It sure felt good to hear that. It'll make getting to 30 days that much easier.

Cheers

Well, she was right; it does really suit you.  I thought the same thing after you showed us your before and after shots.  You are one of the few guys who can grow hair but who really just doesn't look as good with hair as you do sly.  Like I told you before, you just look so "clean" and healthier than you did with the hair and beard.

Thanks for the positive comments. It's starting to feel like I'm seeing the real me for the first time. One thing I didn't expect is the increased feeling of confidence. I didn't realize how self conscious I was about my crappy hairstyles. I used to wear hats 90% of the time and now when I go out I can't wait to get my hat off (very cold here). It's the opposite of what I expected to feel and it's very liberating!

Yes, and I like the way that you have shaped the goatee in that last pic as well.  You have trimmed it right to where the natural creases lie around your mouth and under your chin - so it really looks "groomed" and neat.  Everything about your new look is so much more "neat" and "clean" than your former look.  You look like a guy who thinks enough of himself to take care of the way he looks and presents himself.  And you know what, other people pick up on that too.  You can't help but enjoy yourself and others more when you feel good about the way you look.  It's like the old barbershop slogan; "look better, feel better"!

Thanks for the comments guys. The goatee has been gone for a while, I have very sensitive skin and every time I grow a goatee it itches like crazy and I end up shaving it off. Maybe I'll try it again but keep it a lot shorter.

I'd be careful about going shorter than what is in your before pics because that already looks a bit borderline too short.  Stubbly super-short beards tend to look sloppy and unkempt so if you don't really like the sensation that a proper goatee generates then you are better off shaving everything completely or adopting a smaller style like a soul patch or mustache where you can grow it past the sloppy looking stubble stage.  It's always better to do something right than to go halfway and do it wrong.  O0  In a way it's a lot like a guy with thinning/balding hair where they get the choice to either do a bald head right or do a regular hairstyle wrong with thin patchy hair.

 :)

Your bald head suits you just fine, bro.
You will get used to it......Like others have said before me, stick to the 30-day rule that way others will have the opportunity to adjust to the "new" you. A lot of guys are now opting for the shaved head style and most guys that have deliberatly chosen this route actually do suit it - and you are one of those guys, bro. Keep the look & grow a little face fuzz if you like, as this compliments the bald look, i think.

Your wife will get used to your bald head & who knows, may even offer to shave your head for you, now and then.

My wife didn't like it when I got my head shaved at first, as I had fairly thick & well styled hair at the time. I just decided that I wanted a change and went bald-by-choice. I did grow it out again a bit, but my wife didn't like the feel of the short stubbly head and told me to get it shaved, again. I have never went back to having hair since & now everyone that knows me expects to see me bald..... Hope this helps you s little. All the best.

Bilko

Thanks for the comments and advice everyone. I started using a DE about a week ago and quickly realized that slow and careful is the way to go. Once I slowed down and took my time it started turning out great!

One thing I have noticed is that the Proraso Green shaving foam I have been using doesn't seem to let the razor slide very smoothly, it almost gets sticky. Any idea's what I'm doing wrong?

Today is day 30 of the 30 day challenge. It's official, I'm BBC.
My wife has been informed and is taking the news well :)
I was looking through some older  pics the other night and didn't find a single one where I had hair that I liked. I've had more comments about how much better I look in the last 30 days than the last 30 years.

I'm going to get a "hot towel head shave" at a barber this coming Saturday so I guess I'm embracing the bald thing.

Thanks for all of the encouragement!

I thought I'd update with a pic now that it's been a couple of months. Still loving it!

Thanks for all of the positive comments everyone! I really appreciate it.

I'm honing in on the best tools and techniques for my particular scalp. So far it's seems like a combination of an iKon Standard Razor, Merkur Blades, Midnight & Two Shaving Soap and some pre-shave oil is working out the best for me. I tried some Feather blades… it was a bloodbath :)

It's almost been a year since I started shaving my head so I thought I'd post a pic I took today to update anyone who cares. I've settled on 3 passes with a DE razor. Slow and steady works best for me.

I hope everyone is keeping well and wish everyone season's greetings and a happy new year!

Looks real good.   O0.   I would not have the patience to use a DE razor on my scalp. With the use of a blood thinner I can't afford any cuts. Glad it works for you.

Looks great, not sure I could use a DE razor on my head.

Looking good my friend, and a happy New year to you! I use the double edge razor also. What are you using for razor and blades? Have people gotten used to your new hairstyle?

Hi everyone, thanks for the comments and Happy New Year!
reddog: I use an Ikon razor and Astra blades. I tried many other blades but found these work the best and are quite affordable when bought in bulk on amazon. I tried some feather blades… there was much bleeding :)

Happy New Year, and thanks for checking in! I agree, that Feathers are not the best DE blades, either.
