Title: Shaving with left hand
Post by: socknoggle on December 09, 2014, 06:31:26 AM
Hello fellow sly guys!

I'm having rotator cuff surgery in January on my right shoulder.  I am, of course, right handed.  I've tried shaving with my left hand just to see if I could.  Epic fail.  I really love being bald and I don't want to wait until I can use my right hand again to keep smoothly shaved.  Does anyone have any advise?

Hi Sock:  1st of all welcome to the sly fraternity.  Post up in the INTRODUCTION SECTION of the Forum so we can give you a proper welcome if you haven't already.  Well... you have about a month to get comfortable with you left hand.  I say with practice and patience you can do it.  If it were me I would at least try shaving with your left hand on the 1st pass and finish it off with your right hand.

If you do not want to do it, than I would suggest an electric razor.  However, I say use that left hand.  Keep us posted and good luck with your upcoming surgery.

Yeah, that's the same thing my girlfriend says.  I guess I'll keep trying.  Meh...  I just get so impatient!  But, I suppose I owe it to my sly self to give it another go.

I'm left-handed so I shave with my left hand pretty easily.  Never tried using the opposite hand.  Hmmmm, now I'm curious if I'll just jack myself up or if I'll do just fine.  Might have to give it a shot.

Good luck to you brother!  I'm sure with practice and patience, you'll do just fine and get the shave that you're looking for.

Very simple solution my friend, have the girlfriend shave you!

Or - use this as an excuse to treat yourself to a barbershop shave once a week!

I agree with Reddog and BBBA...but whatever you decide, good luck and a speedy recovery!

I might have the GF give it a try.  What's a little blood between friends.   ;D

I like the idea of getting a barbershop shave once a week.  The one I used go to charges $25 for a shave, so I'd have to find a different place.  I had also thought of maybe getting a 0000 clipper cut every 1 or 2 weeks.  Probably a bit cheaper than a shave.  But, still bald is better.

I wonder if barbers know they would get a lot more headshavers in if they would charge $15 for a shave. I suppose it's all about time and a headshave does require a bit of extra time.

it would be great if you had a local shave buddy that you could exchange headshaves with. Wouldn't even have to use a straight razor.

Exchange head shaves?  I dunno if I'd trust anyone with my head unless he's a professional!

Good luck with the surgery Sock! I've made several strokes with my left hand but it's much slower than with my right hand.  Like others have said, I'd say you just need practice shaving with the left hand.

I shaved my head almost everyday for nearly a year and a half, so that's about 500 headshaves. Must be almost a pro by now!

I'd say let the girlfriend do it or go to the barbershop. Although my one and only experience with a barbershop straight razor shave was horrific! I got the worst razor burn I've ever had on my face and head

That's a kind of experience I hope to avoid.   But how to you ensure that the barber you go to knows what they're doing?  Seems like the higher priced places hire more experienced people, but it makes it cost prohibitive to go there with any regularity.

By the way; thanks for all the support and well wishes, guys!

I found a local barber to do a straight razor head shave that did a good job. Wasn't very close, but no iritation.

You can learn to shave left handed by January.  I am left handed, but some time back I thought I coud do better overall if I taught mysel to shave the right side of my head with my right hand.  If I recall, the first few times were difficult, but within a week or two I was profecient using my right hand, although not as well as my left hand.  I admit it would be difficult to shave my entire head right handed.

Just take it slow and it should work out.  Remember how slow it was the first time you shaved?  It will be slower when you start traing your left hand, but it is possible.  Better than stubble.  And the good thing is, once your shoulder heals, you will be able to shave with either hand.

My first ever head shave was at a barbershop, so you can imagine the anxiety knowing that my first shave ever would be in the trust of someone else's hands.  I called around, and believe it or not, read Yelp reviews to help me find the barbershop to go to.  And I was pleased with who I went with.

They were completely old school, hot towel treatment, buzzing down to 0, slow methodical short strokes with a straight razor, etc.  All the while he was shaving my head, the barber was giving me advice and recommendations on how to do it myself, knowing that I would eventually go that route.  All total, took about 45 minutes.  I only used them twice before I started shaving my head myself, but a great experience overall.

So as with anything a little bit of research, will help you find the right person to go to.

Hey Pal; you are worth $25 a week!  Women spend FAR FAR more than that on their hair!

Crisis averted!   ;)  My girlfriend shaved my head a few days back and actually did a fine job.  Nice and smooth.  I had to touch up a couple spots and give her some pointers for getting the weird little areas, but all-in-all she did well.   I was a bit nervous at first but I eventually let go and just enjoyed being pampered.  She won't be able to do it for me every day while I'm recovering, but if I can get my head shaved every couple of days I'm happy.

Hello.  I am a veteran of 3 rotator cuff surgeries in the past 5 years.  Good luck! My advice...follow the PT routine religiously and start PT as soon as your surgeon advises.  It's slow at first and some of the exercises seem silly, but it really pays off.  Work your way through the plateaus that are part of PT and don't get discouraged.

On the shaving...I was still using a barber when I had my last rotator cuff surgery (for a clipper shave every 2 weeks or so).  He offered to do "house calls" until I could drive - about 5 weeks in my case.  I opted to let it grow out for the 5 weeks. It sounds like you are all set though.

Best of luck with the surgery & recovery.

Glad you are finding your girl friend up to the task, that's Great!
Where there is a will there is a way to get around things, when I was in highschool I tended to having clipper cuts, and my father and i would do each other's head, these days, as far as natural growth he has much more than me now.
But one out there sharing method, that my father used back before marriage he was a shearer, so him and a friend did each others heads with sheep shears, included is a photo of some, I'm sure none of us require a photo of clippers to compare.

My girlfriend has done a pretty good job of shaving my head. I was initially apprehensive, but she did pretty well.  Yesterday, I thought I'd give it another try with the left hand.  I took my time and about 40 minutes later had a nice, smooth head.  It was plenty awkward, but like I said, I took my time.   I think my problem before was that I was too impatient.  Plus, now, after having to adapt to use my left had for so much, I had a bit more patience and confidence I could do it.  So now I don't had to wait on the GF to shave me, which is nice.  She enjoyed shaving me, so I'll probably let her spoil me from time to time.

I've also added a beard.  Debra doesn't really like facial hair, normally, but she likes my beard.

Holy Cow! (or should I say Holy Sheep?)  Those things look dangerous!  Can you really cut a guy's hair with those?  That is one experience I have never had!  I would like to give it go sometime!

oh yeah they can take quite a bit of flesh with them, but using them in their day job, shearing a whole sheep, and the good shearers can do up to 200 a day and that's a sheep that doesn't really want to be there, so I don't doubt the skills, but no way I'd let that near my head
