Post by: jplinks on October 11, 2014, 10:11:23 AM
hi all…28 yrs old…hair thin and bothering me…but can't tell how id look and don't want to make mistake. i have so so many amazing things going for me, and am mostly confident but not sure how/if to pull the trigger…i am very fair skinned also…i think i will like the feel of shaving because i am an athlete and it just would seem to be easier..but i don't know. i have an amazing gf…baby on the way…a million weddings next year (including my own)..and just want to enjoy it all and not be on the fence about it..any opinions? also not sure what style facial hair would look good…this pic is me not shaving for a day and a half..comes in fast

I think your hair looks pretty good as it it right now.  However, given your facial structure, I think you would probably look very good smooth if that's something you'd like to explore (which it seems like you do).  So I would encourage you to try out the sly side of life.   Of course, if you do, you may well like it and never end up growing hair again.  But there are certainly worse things!

I agree with tobler. You look good now. Your hair is pretty short so it is easy to picture you with a buzz cut or shaved bald and I think that would look good too. I think you should try it and see what you think.

Give it a try.  I think it would look good on you.

At 28 I was sporting a full beard and a full head of hair, not overly long, but probably 2-3 inches long.  Buzzed or shaved heads was not in style. Neither were beards.

But as I have gotten older, beards have come into full style and so has the very sort buzz or shaved bald.  You have enough time between now and the wedding to explore bald or very short buzz and a beard, and still grow it back out if you don't like it.

Your beard looks like it grows in fast and full. It will look good. You'd probably do well with head shaving as well.

For me, once I grew the beard, I kept it.  Once I shaved my head I kept it.  I like both and am sticking with them.  You could do it.

Give it a try. You look good with hair but if you really want a bald head, try it now. If you do not like it, your hair will be back within a few weeks.

I would agree with the other posts on here, give it a try, if you don't like it just stop shaving your head.

I think I may give it a try when I go to Arizona for a long weekend at the end of the month. This way I can get a little color. Wouldn't this be a good idea?

I will obviously buzz first, but does a buzz look as good with generally thinner hair or will that not look as good?

The best way to look at a buzzcut is just another haircut....If you feel better waiting until your trip to Arizona, that wouldn't be a bad thing. Gives you and the scalp time to adjust. I think you have the headshape for sly, myself.

It's always easier to try going sly for the first time when you're out of town and among strangers who have no idea how you looked before.

As for the buzz cut, whether it looks better than a clean shaven head is purely a matter of personal preference.  Buzz it down as short as you think you can tolerate and then decide if you want to go for the full shave or not.

I personally think you'd look good sly but I think the buzzcut will also look good.

I would try buzz cut first, let the full beard grow out some before you try a "style", will get an idea of what your facial hair potential and coverage is.

ok so i am going out to Arizona this Thursday night.  Thinking of doing this Friday morning.  taking it down in stages, but my top is very thin and i think a buzz won't really be an improvement..sorta expecting to have the guy buzz it down to a zero and go from there.

i have very blonde fine hair which is why i don't think a #1 or #2 will be the best option, but who knows?

i am out in Scottsdale for 4 days, it will be beautiful and sunny every day..i know ill have to be careful in the sun..but is it a bad idea to expose it?

oh..and i'm proposing to my girlfriend this weekend also :)

short hair is good but a bald head is better!
Give it a try...

No question in my mind.  You have strong facial features which are going to look even stronger when you shave.  And, I don't think that you should/need to grow any facial hair either.  I think that you are going to look "maximum virile" clean shaven athlete!

You have very fair skin so use a little sunscreen when you first shave.

And, of course, we are all anxious:
1.  To know if she accepts your proposal
2.  To see the photos of the new you!

well i do have good news, she did say yes! (i knew she would :))

just got a slightly closer cut, was too afraid to plunge yet but 2 weeks later it grows so fast, just too thin for my liking..so i am prob gonna still try it soon, but just wanted to update.

And the guys are right - you can easily test fly a haircut/shave and change your mind later ---- but once you say "I do"; you "done"!  No changing your mind then my friend!  (HaHa).  Don't worry, trust your heart and your decisions will turn out to be the right ones, (both with the girl and the hair!)

thanks for the kind words everyone.

just curious though…and not to doubt anyone, but I'm just curious i see a lot of ppl saying i would look good buzzed or shaved…but i haven't seen too many reasons as to why you think that!  I'm just curious, again not doubting you..only fear is that the top is too thin to buzz, so if i went down to a #2 or #1 for example, it may not look as good as either longer or shorter..does that make sense? maybe not..lol

It is much easier to shave it like mine so there will be no worry about  top not being  thick enough or the sides not the right way - - - -    eliminate all of that and SHAVE IT ALL    It is sexy - - -good looking and an attention getter.  You will like it and enjoy the wonderfulness of complete baldness.
Go for it  - - -you will enjoy the smooth -  shaved  - shiny  look.
Best

hey guys..update…so i have just buzzed it shorter over the last month or so but i think i wanna go further…like probably no guard…I'm just so unsure if i will hate it or love it, i think it'll be one or the other…however on the other hand i do not like it too much now so what do i have to lose? going to aruba in a few days and i feel like its as good a time as ever…from this pic what do you think about it suiting me?  and please be honest!

I am joining in late, but as several of the gentlemen have said before, the only way to know if you are going to like it is just to do it. I think you are going to look fine.

You are not the first guy who has worried about how he will look. I worried about it for two months before finally I put the clippers to my scalp, took a deep breath and made the first swipe. That anxiety went away immediately and I never have regretted it.

And congratulations!

Congrats on everything!! If you buzz it off with no guard, you might as well razor shave it down completely.  Otherwise it will look unkempt because of the recession and light skin.  I'm speaking from personal experience. It made a world of difference in how much better I looked once I razored it down.

Hi guys. So I did it! Buzzed it to a #1 all around, which looks like less on me because such light fine blonde hair...it is weird to me for sure, I'm not sure I like it, but I do like the FEEL of it and knowing that it cannot get messed up. But as for getting used to it, I'm sure that'll happen but right now it's hard. I am not sure how comfortable I am just showing it all off yet, but I know I probably should. I think if I was more tan it would be easier. Luckily I get to go to Aruba tomorrow so I can get a little color this week and maybe adjust before going back to work/normal routine. Any advice for this? Sorry if pic is sideways

Enjoy Aruba. Make sure you use lots of sunscreen and reapply often.
Title: Re: what do you think?

It looks good on you.  My suggestion is to keep the head hair frequently buzzed (don't let it gain significant length between buzzing) and gradually go shorter, then razor shaved.  The color should even out while it has a tight buzz.  Let the beard get longer at the same time.  By the time you razor shave you head, you will have good beard growth.  It makes a good contrast.

I think the buzzed look looks great on you and I think once you go totally smooth you will look even better. I also really think slybeard has the right idea slowly going shorter and shorter tell your totally smooth
Title: Re: what do you think?

What would you consider significant growth? This was a #1 buzz, so how often would you buzz it
Title: Re: what do you think?
Post by: rss114 on December 29, 2014, 12:00:24 PM
I would say depending on how fast it grows probably buzz it off every week keep it clean
Title: Re: what do you think?
Post by: DOC_OSMC on December 29, 2014, 02:02:17 PM
The buzz looks good but to be quite honest, with the beard, I think you'll pull off the bald and bearded look nicely.  In one of the previous post you, the one from the 25th, I believe, the pic looks like you're beard is a little thicker.  That would work beautifully with a bald head.  You've gone this far, I say take it all the way!
Title: Re: what do you think?
Post by: tobler1 on December 29, 2014, 05:45:20 PM
I think the short buzz looks very, very nice on you.  But I do tend to agree with the peanut gallery that you'll look equally good or better with bald + beard.
Title: Re: what do you think?
Post by: Semi-Sly on December 29, 2014, 11:03:46 PM
Oh Yeah!  MUCH better!  See, you listened to your heart and all is working well for you.  And I like the short beard with the crisp lines as well.  (I am not a fan of bushy beards).

My honest opinion is that you should really go all the way.  You have receded to the point that you would look better shaved.  And a vacation in Aruba is the perfect time to do it!  Find yourself a great looking old fashioned barbershop and treat yourself to a hot towel head shave.

Now whatever you do, you must commit to the 30 day rule!  You need to do this for YOU!

We want to see photos of the shave - the wedding - and most of all --- the Baby!

Congratulations on your great new look.  The uniform hair and bead length looks very good on you, and also makes a nice formal look for wedding pics, etc.  As closely buzzed or shaved heads rapidly become the gold standard of grooming for men who experience natural hair loss, most men with any degree of recession contemplate embracing the sly lifestyle at some point.  After accepting full baldness as a stylisitic option, most men eventually shave their heads and wind up adopting the style either permanently or periodically.  I expect that this will also be true for you at some point, as well.  In the meantime, until you are ready for the next step, a weekly clipper trim of hair and beard will keep you looking sharp.  Good luck with your major live events.

ok so i have gotten more and more used to the look...at first i wont lie it was tough...but i think that is normal?  maybe just for some.  But now i think it kinda is growing on me...as is my hair.  I havent clipped it.  Its been 1.5 weeks.  The back and sides are darker and thicker (no surprise)...my question is...do i just no guard/shave it all? or grow it back? i am getting married in 2 weeks so i am just thinking about both what i really want and also do i wanna be sly for wedding pics...will it look better/worse/same?
reactions from ppl have been generally good...or none at all...dont think iveheard anything bad.

what would you do for your wedding day??

First off congrats on getting married man and if I was you I'd go no guard all over now and if you don't like it then let it grow lol does your wife like it no gird buzzed it is her wedding day to if she does not like the no guard buzz then she might not be happy if that's how you look in your wedding pics

she thinks i look good with longer thin hair or a 1 guard or a cat on my head...she doesnt care...which makes it tougher for me lol i want an opinion other than my own...its either...clean shave/no guard - or fuzzy receding buzz

Clean shave it man do it now and if you like it keep it shaved and since you have 2 weeks of us don't like it smooth you have time to grow it back

While I think you should shave, I don't know that I would before the wedding.  Better to stick with what you know works, so I would go for the tight buzz again.
Title: Re: what do you think?

I would go clean shaven to be quite honest. With the beard, especially if you grow it out a little bit, that's gonna be one clean and awesome look for your wedding and wedding pictures. New life, new start, new look! Seems like a win win to me.

Sounds like you are a very fortunate man, sir. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage.

As partial as I am to the shaved look, my concern would be for how your dome will appear in the wedding photographs. If the formally hairy areas are paler than the rest of your head and face, it might not be how you and your bride want your appearance on that day to be recorded for posterity.

The short buzz looks good on you. If you are not evenly tanned up there, that may be a better look for the pictures.
Title: Re: what do you think?
Post by: mrzed on January 10, 2015, 06:23:27 AM
I'd vote for the clean shaved head for the wedding.

Looks good in the photos.  I was in a wedding this summer and sported a shaved head. I wasn't the groom. Father of the bride.  The shaved head looked good in the photos if I have to say so myself.  The shaved head does not have a scruffy look.

The shaved head does not point out or draw attention to any thinning hair.  It just looks like you are in charge.

Unless bride is strongly opposed, I'd go for the shaved head.

I would say no guard buzz with short beard as per your picture 9th January as

1) It really suits you
2) You have got used to that look now and you want to feel comfortable on your wedding day.

Hey. So it's been a while since January. I ended up growing it back. Turns out I hate it longer. I went today and got a 0 guard into a 1 fade on the side...and a 3 on top. I probably could go shorter...not sly sly because I love the fuzzy feeling for now..but what do you think? Sorry it's sideways

I like the buzz. But as long as you don't have any big events coming up, why not give shaved a try? I just did it two days ago and so far I love it. The only downside so far has been the lighter tone to my scalp but that will change in time. I have to say, there is nothingn quite like the feeling of a freshly shaved head.
Title: Re: what do you think?

You have a nicely shaped head, striking features and large eyes.  If you get rid of the thinning hair people will focus in on your eyes and not on your receding hairline.

I think that you should definitely go for both the shave and the proposal this weekend.  If your GF says "Yes" she takes you as a packaged deal - and not for whether or not you are losing your hair!

Just remember the 30 day rule.  You have to give yourself 30 days to make the mental adjustment to your new self.

Although I have a beard myself, I don't think that you need to grow one.  If I had a nice strong chin like yours I wouldn't hide it.  I think that you look good clean shaven, and just a bit "dangerous" with a few days of stubble!

Good luck this weekend and let us know what she says
