Title: Is there any decent electric shaving machine you could please recommend?
Post by: Shady_725 on October 10, 2014, 12:32:35 PM
Hi guys, i have male pattern baldness so im keen on shaving my head regularly. However i cannot afford to use the gillet fusion proglide, nor can i afford to go to the barber regularly.

Furthermore i find shaving with a razor a struggle, and dont think id be successfull using the double edged.

So now ive thought of getting an electric shaver, which is like a trimmer but would cut deeper. I essentially want to use something that is electric, to get a really clean shaven head close to that of a razor.

Can anyone give me some recommendations please?
Whats a reasonable price to spend on one?
Whats the advantages and disadvantages of using an electric shaver?

Would a electric shaver that has to plug into the mains be more powerful than that which has a rechargeable battery?

(I am aware that shaving with a blade will always give the cleanest and closest shave)

Hi Shady, the Wahl Balding Clipper will probably be a good bet for you.  Though, you should read this thread to get great information on many of the electric clippers and trimmer options out there.

Thanks alot, Tyler I really appreciate. Have you used an electric shavor before, and what experience have you had with it. For example, was it easy to use, did you have to clean the head out constantly and did it leave the hair nice and short.

I second that for the Wahl Balding Clippers.

silverback are electric shavers that required to be connected to the mains, more powerful than those which run on rechargeable batteries.

A wireless one is more convenient for me.

Shady_725, I will agree with other guys about Wahl. Also see if you like to shave your head and not trim, the Braun models.
Both works good on me. If I want zero I use my braun(with movable head) and if I want to trim I use my Wahl 300(mine didn't cut to zero like Wahl balding clipper).
Don't affraid about cord,it's long at Wahl clippers.
Of course if something working with battery didnt have so much energy/power after little minutes like others with plug. Also after years battery needs replacing.
Continue to read here and you will find many same topics.

Thanks for the responses guys, theres too many clippers too chose from so i get very baffed on the topic. How much would it cost to keep the clippers running, eg does any heads or anything need to be replaced and how often.

I think everything depends on use.
About Wahl clipper just you need to put little oil to blades, and after many years blades needs changing. I am new(1 year)with clipper and can't said you how many years. I repeat what I have read :)
About Braun.....company said that head needs changing after 18 months. I change them every two years.

Of course I can do http://wahlglobal.com/united-kingdom/wahl/personal-grooming-styling/hair-clippers/homepro-300-series.html. (http://wahlglobal.com/united-kingdom/wahl/personal-grooming-styling/hair-clippers/homepro-300-series.html.)
I took from Greece 30€. Of course WAHL had a lot of better models...like wahl balding clipper. It will be my next gift to myself :)

I have the Wahl Professional 5-star Series Balding Clipper

It's 60$ with the shipping, I can use it strait on to my head to get a close shave. The quality is good, all you have to do is to put some oil and clean it has specified.

But I disagree with your statement here:

"Furthermore i find shaving with a razor a struggle, and dont think id be successfull using the double edged."

To my advice, It's totally possible to achieve success with a DE razor. I did it and I don't use the Wahl anymore.  A good shave with the grain using a simple DE razor will do a better job then the clipper, less mess, more great odours and the result will last longer too.

Hi shady_725 I use a Brahn electric razor most days. It is fully rechargeable and also works from 240 (Australian) mains power, no doubt it can be adapted for other countries. I find daily use is ok and I don't suffer razor burn or other skin irritations. If I want a closer smoother shave I use the Gillette Fusion razor which has a five blade system and seems to be ok even if used two days in a row. However I think shaving really close daily over a prolonged period might cause skin irritation.
I should add that I always rub moisturizer into my scalp each day after shaving and I feel this also helps to prevent skin irritations.
Hope this helps.............smoothhead

Hi, I also use Braun Series 5 shaver which is probably meant for beard shaving but I use it on the head anyways.

I have tried to use Headblade, Gillette, etc but I just get razor burns every single time. And if I shave with the grain, I don´t get as smooth results as against the grain.

With Braun I have to shave every morning but it usually takes about 5-8 minutes to get smooth head. It won´t stay smooth as long as when razor is used but I rather have a clean head than burned head :)

(for helping you)
..you want also trimming? You want battery? You want sometimes to cut your hair every week and not everyday? You want 100% protection(Braun/Panasonic foil systems) or you want to feel the blades?....and of course Money :)
I think you have the answers to my questions and you can choose which machine is better for you.

Btw, I think nobody's stay in one method. We start with something and we try to see what work better at ours head.

Yep still recommend the Braun. Mine is the series 7 which I have had for a couple of years now but still going well. No doubt there is a newer model but this is the second Braun I have had and both have been great.
Comes with mains power or rechargeable battery option and I find it is quite ok to shave my head daily with this razor. Being a hairy fella, by half way through the day my pate is not as smooth as when first shaved but appearance wise no problems.

Thanks a lot guys, looks like im going to go with the braun. I may be saving up for quite a long time before i get one, but im sure it will all be worth it. I will inform you guys once i get hold of one.

Whats the differences between the newer series of the braun shavers?

Are they more powerful or just a bit more modernised in terms of design etc?

Furthermore smoothhead can you post a picture of your braun, so that i confirm im looking at the corrent products.

Thanks.

One i have is the Braun Series 3 340. It gives a good shave. Takes a while and head doesnt stay as smooth as long as a wet shave but otherwise it is a decent shaver.

As much as I hate to recommend this, because I'm a newly-minted DE aficionado, I would suggest the Head Blade. It's practically foolproof, and while I don't like it personally as much as I enjoy shaving with a DE, the Head Blade is both easy to use and reliable. They sell for about $15 and I found I got 5-6 shaves minimum per blade. Maybe as many as 10-12.

I'm probably a bit too late, but for what it's worth, I use a Remington R5 as shown here.

I personally like the Wahl 5-Star Shaver been using it for a few years now. However, I am looking for another one (panasonic or braun).
