As most of you know, I had to let a small amount of hair grow back in order to keep peace in the family.
But this Thursday my Miata Club will set out for a 5 day trip to the Chattanooga area which will take me right past my buddy's barbershop in Indianapolis. He is the guy who intially shaved my head for the fundraiser I did in April.
I think I might push the edge of the envelope a little and have him buzz of my flattop into a #1 bald fade.
Should I do it? Or am I just going to cause myself more trouble at home?

Randy, I have a three part question for you:
1. Did you grow your flattop back because you liked it or was it due to "family pressure"?
2. While the flattop looks good, do you miss being sly?
3. "Pushing the envelope" It sounds like you're asking "permission" to get your hair cut a certain way" don't you think?
If you have the ability to grow it back, go for it if that's what you want!

Your on a 5 day trip near your friends barbershop and you have to ask? Have him shave it all off. Its just hair and it grows back fast. Have a fun 5 day bald trip. :)

Do the people with whom you need to keep peace allow you to dictate their hairstyle choices?

Randy, you probably already know, you can be back to a flattop in about 14 days. The photo, if it shows up ok, is my self cut flattop at 14 days growth.

hello Reddog:
Actually, what hair is left on the top of my head grows so slowly that it takes a full 8 weeks to get back to a flattop.
I know (and have to agree with family) that I look better with a little bit of hair than I do bald. I have a crooked head and face. My face and skull were broken when I was a child. When I am bald you really notice how uneven my eyes are on my face.
But I really miss the "feeling" of being BBC.
I am about to have surgery which will involve immobilizing my left arm for 4 months, so taking care of the the flattop will be a pain. That is why I am going for the #1 Bald Fade for the winter - I can pull a hat on and off with ease with my right arm and won't have to worry about the hair.
I think that I will take Invaray's advice and just have a fun 5 day vacation. I will just tell Barber Chad that it is his choice! Either way, it is going to be mostly bald and will stay that way for the rest of the Winter!

Ultimately, you gotta do what makes you happy, Randy! Glad you made your decision.

wise words.... whatever you decide, do what "you" want to do... for whatever the reasons are... it doesn't matter what advice you get on here or from friends.... no disrespect to my brothers... or your family, but we are a little biased to shaving
so most will say go for it....

Do what makes you happy, if you want to be BBC then do it, I wouldn't have realised that you had a crooked face, you look great in your avatar, which I assume is BBC?

Just a note on surgery and your shaving arm. In 2013, I broke my right shoulder badly at work. I learned quickly to use my left hand to do many things, two of which are brushing teeth and shaving. It took awhile but i got it. I now ise my left hand to shave the left side of my head(after healing-I dont have the same freedom of arm movement that i enjoyed before breaking my shoulder).
Looks like your barber gives a pretty good headshave.

I think flattops are great. I'd grow out a flattop if the cost of going to the barber every two weeks to keep it looking fresh wasn't so prohibitive. $15 every two weeks costs almost $400 a year.
I have a similar situation with my family - they're always telling me to grow an inch to look more socially acceptable. I'm not sure if it's a rebellion thing, but every time I grow out my hair and someone says, "Oh, you look nice with hair," it makes me want to shave it more.
