Title: How Do You "Pronounce" MPB?
Post by: Ming the Merciless on August 04, 2014, 04:54:04 PM
This is subtle, but it came to me (not for the first time) that I feel a certain ambiguity about the phrase "male pattern baldness," having to do with nounal and adectival matters.

Do you think of it as:

[male pattern] baldness

OR

male [pattern baldness]

that is, a slight pause after "male pattern" making it an adjectival phrase, or a slight pause after "male," making "pattern baldness" a noun phrase?

I hope no one loses any sleep over this...

But "Ming wants to know."

Excellent topic for non-shaving discussion, Ming.

To me, "baldness" is the noun for which "male pattern" is its adjective phrase.

When I saw the title I thought, "YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!!"  So, I'm a bit relieved that there is some actual intelligence behind the question.

I agree with Cave Dweller.
