Title: Gel vs foam
Post by: rico on July 14, 2014, 01:08:03 PM
I've skipped blade headshaving for a couple weeks, doing touch ups with an electric razor.  Somehow, I got into the uneven-fuzz-head look: maybe OK but not what I was trying for.

Yesterday I shaved with a Headblade with a Sensor blade and finished with a Fusion an a Schick Quattro. None of these have fresh blades as I tend to cut myself with new blades.

I did my regular with-the-grain then against-the-grain shave. Oops. I could still feel -- not stubble --  but fuzz and there were patches of fuzz on the sides.  I use a gel shaving cream, thinking it protects from nicks. But now I washed off all that gel and finally got rid of the darn fuzz.

What are people using  as a shaving cream that isn't a gel?  Thanks.

I recommend HeadSlick, Manumission, and Pacific Shaving Shave Cream.  All should provide protection without clogging up your blades too bad.

How often are you rinsing the blade when you shave?  I rinse after each stroke.

+1 on the Pacific (caffeinated, of course)...

Also, Trufitt and Hill has a great selection, as does TOBS (Taylors of Old Bond Street).
Another option would be to stop by a Nordstroms and check out their selection of AOS creams (or if you have an AOS store nearby get a sample pack).

I always recommend RazoRock shaving soaps with a decent brush (notice I said "decent", not "expensive").

I do rinse the blade every couple of strokes.  It was amazing the shave difference in getting the fuzz spots once I rinsed the gel off, though.

My local WalMart has lots of standard aerosol shave creams, but somehow they're mostly gels; it's like Edge and its imitators took over the market.

As an occasional wet shaver, I have a stash of brush shave creams; I'll just have to try one.   Thanks.

Im a fan of headslick and shavebutter.  Headslick is more like a cream, and shavebutter is more like a gel (not the kind of gel that turns to foam once you rub it together).  Not a fan of any of the foams, but thats just me.
