Title: Newly sly
Post by: FearandLoathing on June 08, 2014, 07:52:11 PM
Hey I'm Jason, 29 years old. Notice I was thinning at 21. Around 4 years ago I started wearing a hat everyday. On Friday two friends/coworkers suggested I shave my head. I started thinking about it, did some google kungfu and found this site. Saturday morning I went for it. Buzzed it all down, used a new Mach 3(seems highly recommended here) and now I'm sly. My gf wasn't sure when I first told her what I was going to do but she ended up liking it. I've never felt better and best of all no more hats! Thanks for giving me the confidence to take the plunge!

Welcome and congratulations!  Give it at least 30 days.  Expect a few negative comments from family and friends, at least you and your gf like it.

Welcome, Jason! Don't worry, you'll be alright at work....Give everyone a few days, it will become a non-issue.

Thanks everyone. I sure hope Monday goes alright. I'm growing my facial hair out. It's a bit patchy so not sure what to do with it as of yet. Also how do you choose where to cut ur sideburns. I went with a friends advice and cut it where it's at its shortest width. I feel like it may be a bit low though. Any and all advice is much appreciated!

Looks great!
to me the look appears as something you have had your whole life, and I think people will
accept it sooner then not...

Welcome to SBG.

Hello Jason, it will take a little bit time that your colleague used to your new look, because they know how you looked before. I don't know it, but I can say you look very natural with a shaved head. Don't worry, have a pride and enjoy your new smooth look!! :)

Welcome Jason to the SBG forum. Sounds like you are happy with transition to sly ! But stick with the 30 day trial which others have talked about here. You, and those around you, will soon adjust to the improved you !

Welcome Jason. You look great. As others have said, looks like you've been Sly for a while - totally comfortable. As time goes on you will find it is so much more convenient than dealing with hats, hair management, and all. After the first day at work and everyone gets over their surprise you'll find it truly is "no big deal."

In the early stages of a beard, it's hard to judge where to keep the sideburns......I would give it a little time for your beard to grow out first....I usually keep the top of my sideburns roughly as high as the middle of the ear, if you know what I mean.

You look sharp, Jason.

Nice start on the beard.  Most guys with thinning hair on top can grow a great beard.  It goes well with a sly head.

If there are any comments at work, they won't last long, as they get used to it.  Your upbeat response will also help.

Enjoy the feel of the smooth head every morning. For a little pampering, apply some coconut oil and essential oils afterwards in a scent that you enjoy.  The oil will keep the skin soft, give it a nice shine, and a pleasant scent.

Welcome.  Please stick around and tell us the rest of the story as it unfolds.  Print up on SBG business cards and encourage others to join us at this site.  Be a SBG encourager for others on the fence.

Welcome, Jason.

Talk about confidence. I doubt many of us made the decision to shave and followed through with it so rapidly. Congratulations.

You probably will discover that most people, if they say anything, will react to the new look only the first time they see you. By the second or third time, they will accept it as part of you like your eye color.

Welcome Jason and congrats on taking the plunge! The first day back at work was a little nerve racking for me too but I had mostly positive comments from everyone. Like others have said, the comments just last for a short time.  As far as the sideburns go, just experiment and see what you like best.

The area the top of the sideburns can stop ranges from mid ear to the top of the ear, the place where eye glass arms would sit.  I suggest you start high and then trim down if it looks too high.

Most beards look patchy when starting out and the normal rule is to give a beard 3 months to see how it will fill in, and the cheeks are normally the slowest area to grow.  Only a few guys can grow a nice looking beard in just a few weeks.

I tried the head blade today, I broke out like crazy in the back around my neck. Freaked out bc it looked and felt horrible, used some Benadryl cream which quickly took away the itching, burning, and red bumps.

Good news is work went well. Def got some looks at first, but mostly positive comments. I think I'll stick to the Mach 3 and going with the grain for a bit to let my scalp adjust. Anyways I'm feeling really good about the decision to go sly. Thanks everyone!

Welcome, Jason!  -and congratulations on taking the plunge to slydome.   It looks great on you, and as others have already said, you look like a natural.

As far as the top of the beard goes, this is another area where people have differing opinions, so you just have to do what you like best.

Welcome. Great choice. Being sly looks good on you. It looks real natural. I can't imagine you with hair.
