Title: I think that I have made the transition
Post by: Semi-Sly on April 27, 2014, 09:14:15 PM
Well, it has been over 30 days now since I first shaved my head.  As you know I let my beard grow before I did it.  So now I have a full beard and a bald head.

I still don't like shaving and have simply been going to the barber once a week to have him shave my head and line out my beard.  I really hate the look of my head when it is about 3-4 days grown out; but by the time it gets to one week I love it.  It feels like velour!

Even though I have made it the full 30 days I had, until today, still been missing my Flattop.  For 30 years I had what I considered to be the World's Greatest High, Tight, and Brutal Horse Shoe Flattop.  As both a Naval Officer and a Police Officer that look served me well.  But what I guess I hadn't "noticed" is that I have gotten old - and perhaps a hairstyle that looks great on a hard charging young buckaroo might just look a bit "silly" on an older guy like me?

Today I was at a theater organ concert followed by a reception.  I saw one guy in the group with a Flattop.  He was not quite as old as I am and his flattop was no match for mine.  But this time, instead of feeling jealous and wishing like the devil that I had enough hair left to regain my flattop, I thought to myself that he looked a little silly to be wearing a flattop at his age.

Immediately after the reception ended I drove to my local Arab barber.  This guy also shaves his own head!.  Without even trimming down the weeks' growth he lathered me up with a badger brush and commenced to balderizing my head.  First with the grain, then against the grain, then against the grain again - feeling for any little spot of roughness.  I was thrilled to see my beautiful bald head come back to life right before my eyes in the mirror!

Choosing to remain bald rather than go back to the Flattop is a really big change in my self-identity.  I really do like my baldie!  I am not going to wait a full week to shave it again.  I am going to shave once in the middle of the week as well!

I took a couple of "selfies" on my cell phone right after today's shave.  I sure wish I was better at computers and knew how to post them.

Also glad to hear you are happy with the new look, sir.

I don't know if I could go that long without shaving. I am rather addicted to the smooth feeling.

It's awesome that you're feeling the sly look now.  This is why the 30-day challenge is so critical.  By the end, most everyone is hooked!

Congratualtions on the 30 days.  Smooth is very satisfying.  Since going smooth in 2011, I have never been a whole week without shaving.  I normally shave daily and about 3 days is longest I have gone.

I have always been a fan of the flat top high and tight hair cut as well, but my hair never cooporated so it did not work for me.  But, smooth works with any hair type.

Hi BBBA, I have been in the same situation. I sported a flattop sometimes over the years. After I shaved my head last June, I attempted to grow the flattop back a few times. After a few weeks, I just thought I looked like an old guy with a flattop, so I have stayed sly.

One difference is, that like most of us here, I look forward to the daily shave. I always hated shaving my face, but I enjoy the headshave. Congrats, I didn't think you would stick with the bald head!

Posting a flattop photo, self cut I might add.

Well done on your choice. Bald is definitely better. Now, all you need to do is to learn to shave yourself as it is very easy once you have done it a few times.

BBBA, Welcome to SLy Bald Guys. I am sure that You will enjoy this great web site. Lots of good advice on it. I am glad to hear that yOu have made the transition to sly and like it.

I like the looks of a good high and tight horseshoe flat top myself. FOr me it would not work because I do not have any hair on my noggin. I do like shaving the dome and have done so for about 10 years. It is the only way to go I think.

Enojoy your njew great look.  I look forward to seeing a picture when You get it posted.

So Reddog; you didn't think I would keep the baldie, huh?

Well, I decided that if I am going to keep it I had better start shaving it myself.  So I did it tonight.  I found the Gillette body shaver the easiest to use.  I also bought some "Shave Secret" oil.  I will give that a try next time I shave, (either tomorrow night or the night after).

You are right, you had a great Flattop.  But, don't take this the wrong way, but don't you think that on a guy our age the flattop can look almost a bit "creepy"?

I was wondering how long you were going to stick with barbershop head shaves. While a few guys here still do that periodically to pamper themselves, the do it yourself seems to result in the smoothest shave, from what I read.

The shower shave each days seems therapeutic.  I'm also getting to enjoy the Osage Rub that Warhawk introduced me to.  It has menthol and eucalyptus in it that gives a warming sensation for an hour or so, both on my head and on my hands.

BBBA, no offense taken, but not sure I agree with you. I always associated the flattop with older men, as older guys were the only ones that sported that when I was a kid. I think it is a timeless look, but rare. Two haircuts draw my attention when I see them, a flattop and shaved head. The extreme high and tight is usually associated with cops or military.

Glad to hear you are shaving your head yourself. I'll be interested to hear if you end up enjoying the process like many of us here. After 10 months, I still say to myself "holy crap, you're shaving your head!"

I'm right with you on that Cave Dweller! I don't look or feel good going without shaving that long.

That's the same with me. I like to feel fresh and clean every morning going to work.  Congrats for making it through the 30 days and keeping the look BBBA! Is Gillette Body razor better than Mach 3? It would have to be pretty darn good for me to give up Mach 3.
Title: Re: I think that I have made the transition body Razor vs. Mach III
Post by: Semi-Sly on April 29, 2014, 10:42:28 PM
Hello AJ:

Here is my "beginners" comparison between the Mach 3 and the Body Razor.  I too have been a life-long Mach 3 user for my face.

I just now took my evening shower and shaved my head.

I used, (for the first time), five drops of "Shave Secret" oil with a small amount of "Foamy" shave cream.

I started shaving one side of my head from the top center line down with the Mach 3, (a brand new blade).  Then I switched over to the Body Razor (not a new blade) for the other side.

No question about it, the Body Razor was easier to use.  The shape of the thing and its flexibility make it much easier to get all of the curves on my skull.

And can you believe it - I am shaving my own head - and even comparing razors?!?  What has happened to me?  Oh, yeah; the Grape Kool Aid..................!

BBBA, you're becoming a SBG!

Nice to see you embracing a bald head.

Wow! I'll have to try the Body Razor.  Thanks for the input BBBA! I'm glad you're shaving your own head. It is definitely cheaper that way.
