Im thinking about growing one as you can tell by the name of the thread a big beard always wanted to to see what it would be like but due to my growing pattern i couldnt...im going to show a pic now i hope it works if not its the guy from the hangover hope you seen or heard of it.

I was wondering how long it would take to grow a beard like it i know beards grow at different rates but the estimate...my beard wont be as good as the beard in the pic (as in full wise)no way near but it be good enough...i might not do it yet if anything it be a beard close enough but still how long do you think it will take?
-
Not sure how long that would take for you, but I didn't think I could grow a decent beard, but this year I let it grow for seven weeks and was pleasantly surprised at the result. I should have kept going, but I am going to attempt it again.
You'll never know what yours will look like unless you give it a good try.
-
Yeah true i know it wont be like it in fullness but the weak bits in my beard could get better but regardless i know it will look good i wouldnt try otherwise.
-
For most people it would take at least three months to grow in like the one in the photo. Go for it and don't worry about the weak spots. Every beard has them. Letting the beard get a little longer usually makes them much less obvious.
-
i feel your pain sir. luckily the only spot that i dont have is on my chin. i grow just fine directly under my upper lip, but below that, nothing...you can see my post here and see what im talking about. im about a month and half in and im happy with it so far. im wanting to kinda go for an opie beard from sons of anarchy.

-
Some of my spots look like they are filling in which is obviously good im not really sure how long its been growing out for though weird as that sounds...i started growing it in january but then trimmed it which was sometime in february cause the goatee/van dyke area grows quicker and fuller then my cheeks so i trimmed it to keep it same length...same as the sideburns area then sometime after i trimmed i decided to grow it out so far its looking ok im at what you may call the scruffy stage...the urges to trim are coming into play but i really want to see what it looks like big.
-
Just go for it. Set a date that you aren't going to trim before. Me and some of the guys at work did that last winter. Started around October and we couldn't trim until February.

Any photos?

The average growth rate is about 1/2 inch per month. So your mileage may vary. I would guess that the beard in you link is at least 3 months growth, but would be more like 4 or 5 for me. Beards like that don't grow over night or even in a few weeks.
-
Thanks for the reply guys but update on my beard its looking quite good now the weak bits are filling in even better then before (duh)...even if i wanted to trim it i be to scared to lol just in case i messed up...i never been good at trimming it i wouldnt mind if my beard grew back quick if i ever mess up.
-
Let's see a picture. :)
-
Here a two pics for some reason they wouldnt let me do three i do one more in the next post.
-
And heres the other one.
-
Looks smashing! Great result to the experiment, at least thus far!
-
Looks good! Carry on!
-
Wow! That's coming in great.
i never been good at trimming it i wouldnt mind if my beard grew back quick if i ever mess up.
I'm terrible at trimming, too. In fact, that' s how I lost my beard. I botched the trimming so badly, I shaved it all off. Happened to me again this morning. I was trimming my goatee and made a mess of it, but I think I can salvage this one!
-
that beard is looking great! O0

Trimming is just the worse i dont need to trim though so its all good apart from the mustache i trim that cause it dont really need to be that big and the top of the sidburn area.
And thanks for the replies guys the bit under my lip area is annoying the hell out of me lol the cheeks i can live wit but under the lip is a different story...thankfully though there is hairs growing in that area small ones but hair is hair...reminds me of the connectors when they started to grow in and now theres enough there to look good.
-
Wow, Danny, that looks great...one of those would make a nice avatar if you wanted a new one.
-
Don't do any trimming at this stage, except the botom of the mustache to keep it out of your mouth. The nice thing about a full beard is that it doesn't need to be as crisply shaped as a goatee. Let it go for another week or two and if it is getting too raggedy, get a barber to trim it for you. My barber does mine for $5.

Yeah like i said i only do the mustache for the same reason you said and the top bit of my sideburns thats just for when i do my head i trim that bit aswell...but the rest i havent touched and wouldnt dare to lol...and like i said the bit under my lip or under the soul patch area i wish would fill in abit...im not expecting full like yours i cant see mine ever getting like that...but fill in a bit so it dont make like a "u" look if you catch my drift.
-
Another thing about my beard im hardly getting any urge to itch at all maybe im getting used to it but still hardly got any itch.
-
You are looking GREAT - - -Enjoy it ! !
-
Your beard looks really good, Danny, especially with your clean scalp. Keep it up.
-
And heres the other one.
Keep going, please !
-
Update on my beard dont think the lighting is as good this time around but we see...the obvious weak bits you will see are like that until and if mother nature does her thing there is hair growing in the chin like area so it gives me hope...but i think this is is my beard look for now but i like my beard regardless.
-
Heres thee other side had to put it in another post.
-
That' s looking really good.
-
Wow, the beard is looking excellent! Hope you're enjoying it!
-
Looks great!
-
Looks good!
-
Looking great DannyBoy!
-
Great look on you!
-
Thanks for the comments guys i really do like it and its the longest it has been now with a full beard without shaving it into a certain look like the guy from star trek...i just want hairs on my chin now so annoying waiting lol but we all or most have been there...there are little hairs there so theres hope.
-
Looks good - - -It compliments the baldness.
-
I like it a lot. Looks good on you.
-
Hello guys been a while update on my beard VERY pleased with it i got to my goal now the above chin area is weak but theres little hairs growing there so i let mother nature hopefully do her thing with it i will show you my pics now
-
Nice! The beard is looking great.
-
Wow, that's really looking terrific, Danny!
-
Looking good!
-
Looks great, Danny!
-
I echo what the others have said. A dense, full beard with a bald head make for an awesome look!
-
Looks great!
-
Thanks for the comments guys i feel badass with it lol im soft as anything but you catch my drift i walk in the bathroom and im like wooah...and whats even better im young so it could get better but if it dont i cant complain only thing i have trimmed is the top of my sideburns where it would join with my head hair...i see little weak hairs though makes things better cause its like what will that look like if it gets strong and thick...cause where its weak below my lip there is hair there it dont look it in the pics but there is and enough aswell if they were dark and thick i would be well away.
-
Wow, Danny, that's impressive...I think that tapered sideburns are better than blocked sideburns....but to each his own.
-
Congratulations, sir.
Looks really good.
-
Wow... looks great.
-
The beard is a keeper! O0
-
I agree. Looks awesome.
-
I trimmed the sides of my beard now not alot though just to make it neater it still looks pretty much like my pics...i did it with some scissors i been thinking about doing it for some time but worried but finally did it.
-
Anyone know what i could do to the hair on my lip? it keeps going to the sides like a mustache when i pull it down it looks better and covers more but keeps going to a mustache like look again.

Just least it. Eventually when it gets some length it will hang down and cover more.
-
Ok thanks but believe it or not the hair under my lip has been growing the longest i never shaved it when i last shaved or trimmed it just gets annoying it looks good when pulled down it kinda joins with the hair on my chin i just got to be patient i suppose.
-
Use a little mustache wax, to train the hairs to move away from your mouth.
-
Your beard looks great. How's the beard doing? What length do you aim for?
-
Well my beard now is shorter cause i messed up i was just shaving the stray hairs and messed up :( i still have a beard though the goatee/van dyke area is fine it was just the cheek area...the beard is kinda like that guy from star trek weirdly enough i wanted to try out that type of beard (guy from star trek) but i was to afraid...it was like i messed up subconsiously so i could do it lol (obviously i just messed up)...but to be honest i like it now its cleaner looking has a better look to it...i originally wanted to keep it this way until my cheeks grew in but i might keep it...and the length now im gonna keep it like how it is in my pic.
-
It still looks good. If you wanted to grow the higher cheek line back, you could do it gradually by letting a small amount grow back at a time.
-
I like the new look...I think it looks great!
-
You do have a nice looking beard, DannyBoy.
-
i trimmed it quite alot now i did my experiment anyway i finally know what it looked like with the beard i was aiming for.
-
SlyMyke--Your new avatar looks really good with the full beard and the shiny bald scalp. DannyBoy, your beard is looking great!
-
Danny, can't even tell you how many times I screwed up my beard/goatee trying to trim it. I'm miserable at it. When I am clean shaven it is usually the result of a major shaving mistake. But yours still looks really good!
-
Some of us who are bearded... prefer... not bearded "Clean Shaven" infers the bearded are "unclean".
;)

"Not bearded" it is! My apologies, DoberDaddy! O0
-
Well im down to a goatee now i just kept trimming lol i couldnt help it oh well time to start again i think.
-
Nothing wrong with a goatee, DannyBoy... just no more trimming before you have nothing left!!! ;D lol
EarlBald, thanks for the comment. I've left the beard alone... just waiting for the chin to grow out some more... it has been almost 6 weeks.
-
Well thats the thing my goatee is now down to stubble lol.
-
I miss my beard lol im growing it out again im in the scruffy phase and god i hate that phase but as we know i know what to expect now so its the waiting game again.
-
I've never grown a beard so I'm trying now.
Only 5 days in and feeling scruffy and itchy. Any advice?

It's normal to experience that within the first several days of growing. Give it a few weeks. I was in the same position 9 months ago as you. I stuck with the beard and haven't turned back.
-
Itching can last from a few days to a few weeks. Some guys get relief with beard oil or balm.

As others have said here, stick with it. The itching will pass. Don't shave your beard at all for the first month. Then after that, you can decide on a style you like.
-
Thanks gents, I'll try!
Having been largely clean shaven for years I'd forgotten how red my facial hair grows out at first. Couple of white hairs as well though (all part of turning 40 in 3 months I guess!).
-
Yes, beard oil is good. Also... using a boars bristle brush to help with the ingrown hairs can help as well.
-
I managed a week, then shaved because of the itchiness.
Then I managed two weeks and shaved for the same reason.
Tomorrow is two weeks again and this time I've used beard oil after shaving and haven't really had any noticeable itch. Hoping to stick with it this time as I've never grown a beard in my life!
Thanks for the thread and advice guys! :)

Aside from the obnoxious and unsolicited comments from others, those first few weeks is the worst thing about having a beard. I don't know if it is caused by the length being so short the stubble is rough and abrasive, the stubble holding more skin oils on the face, or the skin losing the exfoliation the razor was performing but that itchiness goes away when your skin adapts. It's like those first few weeks of shaving your head because my skin felt raw and damp until it adapted to being shaved.
