Hey gang!
Was wondering if we have any cops--past, present or aspiring--that would like to share their experiences and know how.
I'll start by saying that I'm applying to several agencies here in Denver and have questions about the recruiting process.
Thanks
r.m.

I'm a municipal cop. Will be glad to offer my insights, observations, and assistance
-
Cool...hopefully others will join in.
By the way....what is a municiple cop?
-
I'm trying to get a Job in canada's Federal Corrections. It's bloody hard
-
That means that I am a police officer for a city
-
Good luck Robmeister. I was considering law enforcement years ago, then I got into dispatching and decided law enforcement wasn't for me, and went into EMS.
-
Law Enforcement is a trying career. Often the biggest obstacles in it aren't from the citizens or community but internal(out of control PC, politics, etc) department issues. I call it the occupation where you're automatically wrong. You were either too fast or too slow, didn' t do enough or did too little, responded too quickly or too slow, made decision on scene that should have been left for the supervisors or failed to make a decision..... LOL
-
Good luck Robmeister. I was considering law enforcement years ago, then I got into dispatching and decided law enforcement wasn't for me, and went into EMS.
Medic, was it "stuff" you heard and were involved with as a dispatcher that was "startling" or "freaked you out" that made you think twice?

Yea, I guess we can all have hopes and aspirations! ;)

I was "on the job" as a Reserve Officer for about 5 years. I ran the reserve program and was a level one officer.
Things for Law Enforcement have changed a lot since then. The thing that kept me from full time was the pay. I think they've fixed than by now.
Most departments around here won't even consider you without a Criminal Justice Degree. That and being in top physical shape are the 1st two things I work on if I wanted to be a LEO! O:O
-
I have 20 yrs in service, and am now an EX-LEO from an SO.
I now have some much less stress :*))

Thanks fer y'all's input.
Yeah, cops are WAY underpaid.
I'm one a them guys who has several things I want to accomplish before I'm too old to do so.
Three major things stand out (there are other minor things) but THREE stand out that I've always wanted to do since I was a kid.
1) Be a rock star
2) Earn a black belt (or some top ranking) in a martial arts style
3) Be a cop
The first one I achieved to a certain level - www.myspace.com/letchengrey
Over the years I've dabbled in various arts and lower ranking belts in Tang Soo Do, Tae Kwon Do and Judo - so I've got some work there (lately I'm very intrigued with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu).
The last one, well here I am.....here in Colorado there's no maximum age, as long as yer in good physical, mental and emotional condition and you can cut the mustard with all the requirements and testing.
The only thing that concerns me is past drug usage (of course in the rock & roll business) but it's been 20 years. But I'm prepared to be honest and some agencies, honest or not, just won't have it.....then again there are more conscientious agencies that do take in the whole scope and context of a candidates life and accomplishments against many years being removed from drug usage.
We'll see...nothing ventured, nothing gained
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat." - Theodore Roosevelt
-
Well done Rob! You know you can do whatever you set out to so go for it bro!
I don't think non-LEO's can understand the pride and brotherhood you experience behind the badge. It's an honor to achieve and an honor to serve with such dedicated men and women. Part of me has been changed forever and for the better!
Its too bad a couple bad apples will get all the attention while officers give their life every day and nobody seems to notice. Such is life as my grandma used to say!
-
My best buddy is a drug task force agent and does some undercover work. No amount of pay is enough is far as I am concerned. Also, they don't get enough respect. We should appreciate them more.
-
........ well here I am.....here in Colorado there's no maximum age, good damn thing! as long as yer in good physicalit could happen...maybe!, mental and emotional conditionYOU'RE SCREWED! and you can cut the mustard with all the requirements and testing.
couldn't resist bro, sorry. good luck with that goal.

Well, first step (application screening) was successful with Jefferson County Sheriff's Dept.
I know it's only the application, but for me this is an initial victory. This was the point at which I was disqualified by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept back in '99 because of the laundry list of drugs I was honest about using back in the music business days.
I was honest again and received this email this morning from the recruiting Sergeant:
Rob,
Your application has passed the initial screening. You will be notified by mail and/or a phone call of a testing date sometime in September.
Good luck!

Congratulations brudda and good luck.
It is a tough job and I'm glad there are good people out there to do it.
I'm not a commissioned officer myself but I am a Defensive Tactics instructor for Missouri and Illinois.
I also teach OCAT (Pepper Spray), baton and various other programs to LE in the area.
Several of my best friends are LEOs that I've trained with for years. My instructor was a cop, and his instructor was also.
I always remind my students that we should fear for any society that pays and respects those that entertain them (stars, athletes, etc.) more than they do those who train or protect them (LE, teachers, EMTs etc.)
It makes me think of the fall of the Roman Empire. Gladiators have been replaced with Reality TV 'stars' but there are a lot of similarities. Distract the masses so they don't see the big picture. Oh well, enough of my soapbox.
Congratulations again and my respect for sticking your guns and telling the truth. Loyalty above all else except for honor.
Dave

How about Corrections Officer.?
-
How about Corrections Officer.?
That WOULD be appropriate RM....you're always correcting Tim's spelling ;D
-
How about Corrections Officer.?
What? To add to the title of this thread? Or alter my focus?
Aside from what Paul astutely noted, I ain't interested in working inside a prison or correctional facility 24/7, 50 wks a year.
-
Well the polygraph examiner said I did well.
It doesn't really feel like a success because yer tellin' them all kinds of sh** you'd rather they didn't know and you wished you didn't have to drag out of the skeleton closet......like a 3-hour strip search.
So I'm taking his word for it and saying, "Success" !B@
Next step, if all goes well, will be a conditional offer of employment, "conditioned" on favorable results on the Psych test and physical examination.
Jefferson County Sheriff's Dept - Application Screening- PASSED
Written Test - PASSED
Oral Interview Board - PASSED
Physical Fitness Test - PASSED
Polygraph - did "well" according to the examiner (report still pending)
Psychological Test - Pending conditional offer of employment
Physical Examination - Pending conditional offer of employment
Background Investigation - awaiting introduction to my investigator
The poly examiner DID say, as he was walking me out, to keep runnin' and workin' out to get ready for the academy O0
Another cool thing he said was to start savin' up to purchase my Glock for the academy:

-
Congratulations Robmeister .... one step closer to being "the man".
-
Congrats Robmiester!
-
Congrats Rob!!! O0 O0
-
Good going Rob!!!
-
Found out that my polygraph report has not yet been submitted. So I can't accurately say at this point that I officially "PASSED." But the fact that my examiner said that I did "well" is a good thing.
Got a call on Friday that they were commencing my background investigation (B.I.)
This seems like a so-far-so-good indication.
Seems like they wouldn't enlist the resources and man-hours necessary to do a B.I. unless they were thus far satisfied with my progress.
This is by no means a slam dunk, folks. Especially with a large agency like Jefferson County. So....FAR from being cocky about all this...I'm HUMBLED by each successful stage.
I have appreciated all yer well-wishes, positive thoughts....and most of all PRAYERS !
Jefferson County Sheriff's Dept - Application Screening- PASSED :)

-

GLOCKS ROCK, DOOOOOD !!!
But other than that, it's probably a requirement that standardizes the firearm training.
-
I have to say, having only fired a Glock once at a range ... ten years ago ... it is a sweet weapon.
-
RM, great to hear everything is progressing with your police training. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I have the utmost respect for those who are willing to protect and serve.
In regards to the Glock, I believe these are able to be fired and will not jam even after being submerged in sand or water.
Now that is a reliable weapon. But I suspect a lot of police forces uses them for their ammo capacity(17+1). Although in my opinion a larger calibre weapon would be more successful in a violent situation. But the goal is only to immobilize not to kill.
Some law enforcement agencies still arm their officers with 6 shot long barrel .38 or .45 revolvers.
-

Yep! When I was a campus cop in Columbia South Carolina, I used to hang with Columbia PD and they were only "allowed" to have a .38 revolver. I was better armed than the city cops LOL.....I had a 9mm Baretta.
Glocks come in 9mm, .40 caliber, .45 caliber and 357 O0

I wasnt aware of this RM. I have never seen or heard of a Glock pistol that fires a .357 round.
So you actually have to buy your own gun to use for the police force or is it just so you can practice your markmanship?
A Marine is offering you his assistance with marksmanship, Man if I were you I'd send him a plane ticket return to Denver straight away bro, That is an offer you shouldnt refuse!! O0
-

Yep! ..... check it out (links to various models on left of page) it's a 357 SIG
http://www.topglock.com/
-
We lowly patrol scum carry the Sig P229 in my dept. The beautiul people SWAT people carry the Glock. All carry .40 cal. The previous chief liked the Sig for a variety of reasons including the heavy trigger pull which, i guess, he believes is an asset to prevent accidental discharges. The sig took awhile for me to get tight shot groups but after i adjusted to the weapon, is no problem. My dept issues us the Sig. As a patrol officer, I CAN carry the glock but would have to buy it myself. If you'Re invloved in a shooting, your gun will be taken for evidence and you may never see it again. So, if you bought the glock, it.s gone. The depart will issue the sig.
Many will tell you the Sig is better made andmore accurate, etc. All the weapons are excellent; just different. It all about training, its all about standards, its all about weapon handling and muzzle awareness. Its a tool and you have to train regularly with ther weapon using realstic scenarios and with fellow officers.

Got some horrible news this week.
I wasn't among those chosen to be included in the academy of January '08 with Jefferson County Sheriff's Dept.
I've got the process going with other smaller agencies around Denver, but JeffCo was my DREAM position. ***boo hoo hooo*** :'(
It's VERY tough getting on with Large agencies (JeffCo is the largest county in Colorado).....lots of "thoroughbred" applicants, if ya know what I mean.
***sniff, sniff*** :'( :'( :'(
-
I'm sorry to hear that Robmeister. But, everything happens for a reason and I'll bet that if you keep plugging away in trying to find that right job, you'll land something good. Maybe one of these smaller agencies could end up being a stepping-stone to your ultimate job.
-
Hang in there Rob. Remember all this will only make you better and stronger once you find that perfect job.
-
rob....please hang in there. i remember u quoting WINSTON CHURCHILL in one of your old avatar signature: "never ever, ever, ever give up!" O0

Sorry to hear about that Robmeister.
-
Hang in there bro, don't give up. Things happen for a reason, perhaps your real dream job is still waiting for you and you just have to find it.
-
Hang in there Rob. I know quite a few cops who have worked their way up from small town beginnings.
-
Sorry it didn't work out, RM. But things happen for a reason -- and I personally believe that things have tendency of working out for the best, even though it may not seem like it at first. Hang in there.
-
Hey Rob, sorry to hear things didn't work out like you'd hoped. Things do happen for a reason, and you probably will see it one day. Hang in there and keep plugging away and things will work out for you. Keep it moving, forward progress, and keep ya head up, bro!
-
Hey Rob, keep pushing.
I saw this short movie yesterday and thought about you (but it also applies to everyone I know).

Very encouraging ! Thanks Herronm!
Thanks to y'all for the words of encouragement. Wasn't really fishin' for sympathy....just keepin' y'all updated.
But once again, the brotherhood steps in! O0
-
I guess that is what happens when I DONT read ALL the post......sorry about that Rob....like everyone else said....it happens for a reason. Tough to swallow....but you will see it someday. Its their loss....not yours. Just keep on searching...............it is just around the corner....yeah right....how many corners do you have to go around before ya find it? ....my luck I would be on a street that just goes in a circle...with no corners.
-
I too missed this post but I'm sorry it didn't work out bro.
Hang in there brother it;ll happen. O0
-
It's tough going thru that much stuff and get turned down!
Keep the faith and I'll be praying brother! I think you would make a great cop!
Great attitutude!
On the pay issue I too believe emergency response people don't get paid near enough!
-
Rob, I read through the entire thread. Maybe all is not lost. Larger departments obtain a hiring list off a test that they give about every 2 years. The testing process is obscenely expensive. What they do is hire groups of people off the existing list over whatever period the list stands. So if you didn't get hired this time you may be slated to be part of a group that gets hired later on off the same list. I'd call HR at JeffCo and see if that is the case.
In any case, good luck with the quest. You'll have lots of good bedtime stories that will keep the grandkids from getting to sleep.
-
Hey Rob,
Lost track of the thread for a while... sorry to hear about the set back bro.
I think this will be just a brief pull-back, regroup and new plan of attack for you! O0

Can I see your license and registration please...........
