Title: Mirror Shaver or Shave By Feel
Post by: DOC_OSMC on January 24, 2014, 11:35:40 PM
I've been sly now for a little over two months and have a pretty good routine down.  I'm a sink shaver and shave the front in front of the mirror and use a hand held mirror to help me see the back as I shave it.  One day I'd like to be able to shave without having to use the mirror and just do it by feel, but I think that's a long ways away still.

Curious, how many of you all shave using a mirror and how many can do it by feel?

I can do it by feel now.  I feel the stubble, and when I have shaved it off, I feel smooth skin.  When my scalp feels completely smooth (wonderful feeling!), I'm done.  I occasionally miss a little patch here and there, but I get it next time.

Always by feel. I can feel much more than I can see. When I used to use a mirror, I'd end up tidying up by feel at the end. If I'm shaving around a beard or mo, I'll do the bits around the edges first, in a mirror, then do the rest by feel. I like to finish up feeling like I've never had a hair on my entire head ;)

I can do it all by feel now, but I prefer having a wall-mounted mirror for reference.

Although I used the mirror in the beginning I have to do it by feel now. Looking in the mirror when I'm shaving confuses me and that's a dangerous thing when one is wielding a sharp edged implement.

When I was buzzing my head, I used a hand held mirror to see the back because I wasn't shaving all the way to skin and I needed to see if I missed any spots. Just feeling wouldn't work because I was leaving stubble. I needed to make sure it was all even.

Now that I razor shave sly, I don't need to see the back. I still stand in front of the mirror in front of my sink, but I just feel now to check for missed spots. I do a better job with the razor and this method than I did with the clippers.

Echoing the preceding gentlemen, I use the mirror only while I am shaving around the goatee and mustache. After that, it is by feel.

Since I shave at least once a day, my eyes really cannot see the stubble as well as the fingers can detect it.

I use mirror  to shave face but shave head by feel.   Can't see the stubble by mirror but can feel it. shave atg.

I have always shaved my head by feel.

I'm farsighted and wear trifocals.  I can't see anything up that close with glasses, and they get in the way of shaving.  It's just impossible to 'see' anything so the mirror gets in the way.

When I used to buzz my head, same thing. Always by feel.  Can't see that close. Don't like fighting with the glasses. Can't crook my neck to get the right lens in the right place to see what I'm doing.

I shave my face with a straight razor, so I use a mirror.  I use a DE razor on my head and use a mirror for the front and sides, but it's easier to get the back just by feel.  The DE razor is so efficient at removing stubble it's easy to do without looking and just feeling, as well as listening to the sound the razor makes while cutting stubble.

I use the mirror for top and sides, but I still use my fingers to feel as I'm going. And I just feel the back of my head.

I used the mirror for the first day.. I couldn't after that. Lol I always get confused when using a mirror on the back of my head, which way is left and which is right?! With my ATX Headblade I run my fingers along and align the wheels where I need and make sure the wheels hit my lead hand to get those spots.

I always shave in front of a mirror at the sink. I do it all by feel but use the mirror to shave around my mustache and goatee. I do use a mirror to look at the back of my head when I am done. I can feel when the dome is nice and smooth the way I like it to be.

Glad I'm not the only one who used the word "confused". Thanks boys, I feel better.

Hand mirror for the back of the dome.  Easy as pie.  If you rely on "feel," you are going to get shaving foam all over your fingers as you go.  Get the foam off with razor work and then use the fingers to find the less smooth places and shave them again.

Shave by feel for the most part. Use the hand mirror to view the damage (bumps and red areas).

I also shave in front of the sink mirror but the back gets done by feel.  I could only use a hand held mirror if I grew another arm because I use my free hand to pull the skin on my melon taught while I'm shaving.  I find that when I'm shaving the back of my head, it works better for me to start in the middle and work to one ear then start back in the middle again and work to the other ear.

Mirror for facial hair, feel for the head.

For the the top and sides I use a mirror only because I have a steamless mirror in the shower or a mirror in front of me at the sink. Even then I still rely on feel. The back is pure feel. Too much coordination is needed to hold a mirror in one hand and a razor in the other. When I rinse, I rely on feel to double check the work to make sure I didnt miss any spots. Then the last check is with a hand held mirror to make sure I don't have any nicks.

I'm the same as Sir Harry, by feel on my head, mirror for the face.

Red Dog, I'm willing to bet we use the mirror for the face, because the last thing we want to do is to make a mistake and be forced to cut off our fine facial hair, right? ;D

Absolutely, Sir, I am very careful in that area. Matter of fact, Friday nite at the pub, I got 2 more compliments of the beard. Both by young women!

I shave my head mostly by feel. But tend to do touch up areas (like around the ears) by mirror.

Mainly by feel in the shower, but I do have a small shower mirror I use to keep from cutting my ears off.  My scalp hair grows all the way down to my ears, so it is a hard spot to get and not cut my ears.  I usually end up using tweezers every few days to get the hair that I just cannot seem to be able to shave.  And Like Reddog and Sir Harry I use the mirror to get the line between my beard and scalp even.  I do not want to risk loosing any facial hair in the process of removing scalp hair.

If I'm traveling, I shave by feel but at home I have a mirror set up in the shower.

Shaved the dome this morning and tried to do it by feel in the back, but went back to using the hand mirror. Felt weird to not see what I was doing. I guess I'm just a visual person. When I touch up, I do do it by feel, but that's just small patches.

I have a friend who has a three-door medicine cabinet all with mirrors....He says when he shaves his head, he opens the two oustide mirrors to about a 45-degree angle and it gives him a perfect view of the back of his head similar to those mirrors you see in dressing rooms at the store. If(when) I redo the bathrooms, I may invest in one of those myself....

I also have a 3 panel med cabinet, vintage 1958 when my home was built. It is really cool, can see all angles.

So I did shave by feel today in the shower.  Not bad, although I did have to reapply the shave cream a couple of times.  I did have to go over a few areas a couple of times from missing them, but overall, it worked out.  I must admit the steam from the shower felt like it helped guide the blade a lot better and the shave seemed smoother.

I use a hand held mirror for the back, always have, I get to nervous to shave by feel, always scared I'm gonna cut the back of my head, I also make 2 passes on the back and sides , 1 pass with the grain, 2 pass against the grain for an extra smooth feel. I need a mirror to see what I'm doing, then yes I touch up the little spots missed by feel, so I guess I can say I do both.

Shaved by feel in the shower again, and I gotta say, I'm getting better it at. Again, the steam from the shower seems to make the shave go smoother and easier. Or if that just in my head?

For me. . . I get better head shaves in the shower.  Going by feel is the only way to go for this head shaver. 8)

Feel is not an option for me because there is always something I'll miss whether it be on my skull or face even when it all feels okay.

I always used the mirror above the sink until today, actually. Finally cleaned my bathroom after too long and realized I was creating a disgusting mess from the sink mirror method.

Mom got me a fogless mirror that sticks on the shower wall for Christmas and I finally tried it out today. I have to say it's the best thing any man can do for themselves when shaving anywhere from the neck on up. No mess, shaving cream is nice and warm, and your hairs are ultra soft. Gets done much faster with less irritation.

This is the one I have:

Two days in a row now shaving by feel and in the shower.  I see now why some of you shave every day.  It's easier and quicker to do when there is only minimal growth.  And again, the steam in the shower seems to make the blade glide smoother and with no irritation.  This might convert me to an every day shaver.  I do still do some minor touch-up in front of the mirror for the side burns area of my beard, but that only takes less than a minute.

I gotta try that, I hear more and more BaldGuys say it's the only way to go, would make sense and it's less clean up time 2, then just moisturize.

In this cold weather, I love to pamper myself by shaving my head in the shower, making it last longer.  I shave by feel, and, as mentioned, it seems easier with the hot water flowing and making steam.  I don't know if I'll keep with this when the weather gets warmer.
