Title: SNOW!?!
Post by: Lith on January 23, 2014, 06:29:48 PM
It's snowing in central Texas!! Most of yall are probably looking at this like WTH, but it never snows here. It's not real snow like most of you know, but still a rarity.. I think the last time it snowed here was like 4-5 years ago on easter. Funny, schools and stuff were shut down before it even started! Again I know most of you are like WTH?! But again it never does, so no one is prepared for it lol.

Snow is unusual in Texas.  However, in the Washington, D.C. area, even tho we get some snow, we collectively freak out!  Many offices, including federal, and schools were closed Tuesday even before the snow hit.  Yet, someone people in Chicago, New York, and Montreal manage to get to work and school even with a couple of feet.  Enjoy your brief snow--that's the best kind!  I did enjoy my day and a half off work (Tuesday I was going to be off anyway; yesterday, the office opened at noon).

You would think that in Connecticut, we'd understand that it's New England and in winter it snows. Yet the media get hysterical at the mere mention of snow. If it is snowing during the morning commute, whether we get one inch or one foot, the schools are closed. I live in a state of weather wussies.

There seem to be several such states, Mike!

Mike and Earl, that makes me feel a lot better about the hysteria happening where I am.

Here in south Texas, we might get down to the mid 20's with some freezing rain late tonight that MIGHT stick to bridges and overpasses but not to streets since the asphalt will retain enough heat to melt whatever ice falls. Schools already have cancelled all activities for tonight (at 8:30, it is just at 32 degrees with a light drizzle) and are warning us that they may close tomorrow. Some government buildings like the county courthouse already are scheduled not to open until 10:00 a.m.

My office will email us at 5:00 a.m. as to whether we are going to close. I expect to be at work at 7:00.

No snow near Charlotte, just cold.  Office always let's us decide whether to come in or not. Most can telecomute if desired.  If the roads are slick, stay home. That's the mantra here.

I live in PA and 5 years ago I was flying to El Paso for work after thanksgiving.  When we left from Washington DC it was 60 and sunny.  When we landed in El Paso it was 30 and snowing.

Then there is this week...it has been under 10...got snow on Tuesday and schools just reopened today.

We've actually closed the schools because it's been too cold. I see these knucklehead kids waiting at the bus stop wearing just a hooded sweat shirt - no hat, no gloves. Maybe if they dressed appropriately for the weather, or their parents made sure of it, the schools wouldn't feel like they were responsible.

When i lived in interior Alaska, if it was -50 at 6 am, the schools would close for the day.  Just too cold to keep the buildings warm, and a bit much for the students with the 90 minute bus ride.

Churches would close at 40 below. The tended to have less insulation, as they were only used 1 day a week.

To all my Texas Friends...we may get some of that snow in SW Louisiana, but it's not expected to reach the Southeastern part of the state where I live....it is, however about 26 as I type this so we are doing the P.P.P.P. Protection plan (People, Pipes, Plants, Pets)

OK, so I was wrong. Schools are closed and my office will not open until at least noon.

My wife just wondered whether the malls are open...

I find it funny when folks clean out the local supermarkets like they live in Antarctica and were storing up for the winter.

A common phenomenon.  I watched people here in Oz stock upthe days before Xmas as though there was a siege although the supermarkets were only closed on Christmas Day. Go figure.

In South Louisiana it is too cold, icy, and dangerous for schools and government buildings to open, but the malls, restaurants, and movie theaters all have great business today.

I personally love the cold, but here in Florida it's a rare thing.  It really irks me when watching the evening news and the meteorologist and anchor people make such a big deal when the thermometer hits 50.  They're like, Oh, the humanity, when is it going to warm up, we're going to die if the temperature dips below 80.

Here in Canberra it ihas been over 35 Celsius (about 95 F) for weeks and we have had no rain for about 2 months and desperately need rain yet each evening the weather people on TV talk about the pleasing prospect of another fine and sunny day tomorrow.  Trees and shrubs are dying despite some watering and I have given up on my small lawn.

Here in Austin it was the ice which was covered by ½ inch of snow that was bothersome.  Couldn't even get the newspaper on the driveway  until mid afternoon.  Of course it will be 70 tomorrow.  Lived in Alberta (cold) and Syracuse (snow - 200 inches a year) so I know winter.

Mike, I agree with you entirely. My son leaves home here in Minnesota all the time without a jacket on. He claims that he has one in the car. Unbelievable! He is 23 years old. He should know better by now.

I always found it funny how people would clear out the stores. I remember the same thing in NY. The whole aisle and shelves would be devoid of milk, bread and eggs at the mere mention of snow.

Did you ever notice that in the midst of a snowstorm, all of the local news channels send some "reporter" out to stand near a snow-covered street or ramp and say "As you can see behind me, the roads are snow-covered and treacherous.  The best advice is to stay off the roads."  As if we all are too dumb to realize that!

Tallahassee/Leon County went into total freak out mode.  They even cancelled school.  Driving to work this morning, my first thought was that it was worse during a normal rainstorm last week.  SMH

New York City has been hit with snowstorms this year. Citizens have been advised to avoid travel, but have the schools open. Although I grew up without snow days for school, I believe some of us grow up, and realize the potential dangers. Although I'm not in favor of closing schools over any little things, common sense should be used. It's only been two months, and the new mayor is disliked.

We close the schools at the first sight of a snow flake in CT - sometimes we close just based on the forecast. Parents will complain when we close - that we should have been open and they will complain when we stay open that we should have closed.

When I was a kid, schools were always open and parents used their judgment. If they thought it was unsafe to go to school they kept their kids home.

Well this thread has completely destroyed my image of the northern states being so hearty in snow and ice.

We joke down here about how the highways and schools always close at the mere hint of ice, and how everyone raids the grocery stores whenever there is a possibility of a winter storm. Now I don't feel so silly.

Yeah, our grocery stores are full of people, too. But sometimes it does really snow! I have been out with the snowblower every day since Thursday. No work Thursday or Friday. I'm starting to feel like Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Never really minded this weather and work, but I'm starting to really get put off by it. Probably another awful by-product of turning 50!
