hey guys, first off just want to say that this is a great site. been browsin around here for a while now and heres my story.
i'm 20 years old and am unfortunatley losing my hair at an alarming rate. i've spent the last couple weeks exploring my options and it basicly comes down to 3 choices...get a hairpiece, take meds, or shave it all off. to tell you the truth i am not too fond of either, haha. wearing a hairpiece is definatley out of the question for obvious reasons and i am not looking forward to taking meds for the rest of my life and risking all those possible side effects for the sake of my hair. it seems as if the best and healthiest choice for me to make would be to simply invest my money in shaving supplies.
i guess the biggest thing holding me back is the change in appearance i am going to go through but to tell you the truth....i've been browsing around here and looking at pictures of various members and i must say that all you guys look pretty good, haha. i see alot of bald guys on the street that look good as well. i guess i am just nervous about making the change and what other people may think.
anyways...as i said above...the razor seems to be the healthiest choice in my opinion. it's unfortunate that i'm gonna have to start doing this at 20 years old but what can you do.

Jimmy, I know it's tough to have to make that decision at the young age of 20, but I think you've made the correct decision, so kudos to that! One thing to remember is that you are always more critical of yourself than others are of you. I'm positive you'll be positively surprised at your appearance after shaving your head. Most of the guys here tend to ask themselves, "why didn't I do this earlier?"
Have fun with it and if you have any questions, post 'em up!

jimmy..you making the right decision for sure!...try a buzz cut first if ya scared.

Welcome to SBGs, Jimmy!

Hi Jimmy,
Welcome to SBG's. I can understand your hesitance but I say go for it. By shaving yourself sly you are taking the bull by the horns. I also started losing my hair at a very young age & it is tough but actually, when shaved right down the hair loss shows far less. If I was in your position today, knowing what I know now ... I wouldn't hesitate & I don't think you'll regret it if you do decide to go sly.
Also, regarding the change in appearance, if you are definitely losing your hair then at some point it's going to come anyway so again, better to grab the bull by the horns & beat mother nature to it.
Anyway, good luck. O0

Hi Jimmy and welcome. Sounds like you already have a great attitude about going sly...and you are definitley making the right decision.

Welcome Jimmy!!! Good advice from everyone. There are several fellow SLY members that are BBC (bald by choice). The rest of us are just speeding up the inevitable. We all shave our heads for different reasons. You might consider Kajun's advice and do the buzz first, that will make it easier to shave when you get ready.

Welcome to SBGs, Jimmy! 8) You won't regret it once you do it. I was in a similar situation and should have been shaving my head since I was 20...15 years later, I wish I would have done it back then! O0

Good luck dude....
I'm happy that you've realized what you need to do so early in your life..
Shave it slick and never look back bro, you'll see how your life and outlook will change just from doing such a simple thing!
Post a pic after you do the deed! O0

save the $$$ and shave it bro, give yourself some time to get used to it and you will be able to decide if it suits you or not...the freedom of not trying to make something look like it isn't is a wonderful thing...

Jimmy, Glad you decided to joined us. All that I can add is that almost all of us have been where you are now and in the end we come the point where we decide that it really is only our own opinion that counts. You can't live your life wishing you'd done something. You just have to trust your gut and take the first step.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Welcome BRO! And like Tyler said...we tend to worry more about what others think and it is a waste of time. You will find you will get more compliments then you can imagine. Post a pic of yourself so we can help you decide. Some guys have the head shape and others dont....but that shouldnt matter....a guy that shaves it bald is a friend of mine. Just read some of the forums in here and you will find alot of useful info and mostly you will find all of us guys that you think look good bald.....were in your shoes once. I say go for it...cause you know you have the other two options to fall back on ....but guarentee you ...once you go all the way.....you will be comfortable...just be patient..first two weeks could be rough...get good shaving products and a good blade....you will be fine. we are here to help you when ever you have questions....Welcome to SBG's

hey man,
I went progressively shorter with closer and closer buzz cuts. By the time I went sly there was hardly any difference. If I can do it, you can do it .

Jimmy, your story sounds incredibly similar to mine - only mine was 23 years ago. At age 20, I began losing my hair and experiencing the beginning of male pattern baldness. I opted for the hairpiece route. I hid under one for the next 23 years. All I can say is don't go that route. You will never be completely unnoticed and you will worry about who is looking 24/7.
Go the sly route. SBG can get you through it. SBG convinced me to go sly 53 days ago and it has been the best 53 days that I can remember. IF SBG had been around in 1984, it would have been awesome (Come on Tyler, where were you when I needed you :*))
As many have said, I took the bull by the horns and did things on MY terms for once. I learned not to worry what other people think. I am proud of my new look and so will you. After people see you for the first time, they will not think another thing about it. Most people when they first see you will say it looks great. I am still getting those compliments even now.
Trust me, SLY is the look and the feel for you. Go for it and good luck.

Man, I shaved my head on the 4th of July. It was Indepence day from my hair and my worries over my hair. It was independence from Rogaine and Propecia and Nizoral Shampoo and receding hairline. It was the beginning of a new me, way stronger than I've ever felt. Do it, you will finally accept yourself, and feel comfortable and start living life again.
I look back on pictures where I had hair, and I'm like, thats not me. I feel streamlined cool and confident. One thing tho, remember the 30 days rule. Shave your head and give it 30 days. It is something you have been very used to that you got rid of, so there will be the initial worries, but they all pass, and than their is a happier stronger, better looking you.
Friends have told I look way better, girls have told me I'm cuter, and I wasn't even really bald. Another thing, get some sun (PATIENTLY, if not you can burn bad), and it'll look even better.
Just do it, trust me.

Sorry, I didn't get my first computer until I was 10. That was in 1987 - :*)) Plus, Al Gore didn't invent the internet until much later. $@y

Welcome Jimmy. Like others have said, try buzzing it down a little at a time at first if you're worried about how it may look. Then go for the sly look and it won't a shock to you.
