Title: Hi everyone - new member
Post by: Thai boy on October 16, 2013, 03:06:51 AM
Hi everyone

My name is Andy and I am new to the forum.  How did I arrive here?  My story goes back many years to when I was in my mid thirties I started to realise that I was going thin on the top and after advise from my barber I started to keep my hair short.  I carried on with this approach all way through my forties up to last week.  For years I have had to manage with a comb over which was the topic of many jokes at work.

I previously worked for Local Government in the UK and eventually accepted redundancy when I was 50.  I am married to a Thai National who has lived with me in the UK for ten years.  We did not hesitate when I was offered redundancy and we relocated straight away to Thailand where we have set up and run a very successful English school.

When I arrived in Thailand I noticed many other English teachers who I was introduced to were sporting a full head shave and I noticed how good it looked and how beneficial it was for them, especially living in a country like Thailand which has a very hot climate.

I considered taking the plunge but was concerned in regard to my facial features for I have a large nose and a narrow head.  I considered sending my picture off to the many sites that offer to send you back an image of yourself without hair.

Believe me I vised this forum on many occasions.  I spent endless hours combing the little hair I had backwards and looking in the mirror trying to anticipate what would I look like.

Last week I was in Phuket on holiday with my wife and daughter and I woke up took a shower and shaved.  After looking at myself in the mirror I thought GO for it!! I told my wife to take me to the salon just outside the hotel.  In a matter of minutes we were there.  I sat in the chair and asked them to cut it all off and give my head a wet shave.  My heart was beating ten to the dozen in my chest.  After a few seconds the hairdresser had shaved the remnants of hair off my head with the electric clippers.  She then used a cut throat razor blade with foam and shaved me clean.

At first I was unsure but had previously read the 30 day rule on this forum so was prepared for a little uncertainty.  I took the plunge and posted a picture on face book.  The response was very positive.

To cut a long story short I love my new look and shave my head every morning, I have already ordered the Head Blade ATX and am excited at the prospect of using it for the first time.

I have grown in confidence.  No having to constantly rearrange my hair, I no longer avoid being in photographs and I am more confident overall.

I am now a 52 year old clean shaven sly bald guy

Welcome Andy.  I think your picture looks perfectly normal.  I would never know you've only been a week into shaving your head.  It looks very natural for you.

Nice result. Looks good. What city in Thailand is home for you?

My wife and I visited Chiang Mei a few years ago. I was buzzing short then, but not bald.  Very nice for the hot weather. I'm sure bald is better.

Thanks for all the welcomes and encouraging comments much appreciated.
Mr Zed I am in the Northeast in a city called Udon Thani.  Yes the bald head is so much cooler in Thailand just have to apply sun cream or wear a hat when out and about in the direct sunshine.

Welcome, Andy!  Thanks for sharing your story.  I'm sure you look back now and wonder why you could be worried about how you would look with a shaved head.   It looks good and I'm sure you feel like a whole new person in a new country.  It sounds like a great new adventure for the next 50!

Welcome Andy!!

You know, your tale sounds a lot like most others, so just knowing you aren't alone is a huge relief. I think you look very natural with the shaved/sly look.

It's nice in even warmer climes (like Thailand) to be free of hair, it's such a fuss. It sounds like you have a great routine and source of support around you, and that is wonderful.

I hope you'll become a regular poster. There are lots more folks "lurking" out there, wondering "should I...?" - maybe your voice and experience will help convince them to go sly!

Hi guys thank you for all the warm welcomes and supporting comments.  I am loving my new look.

I have never suffered from low confidence due to my role as a teacher and twenty years working in government however, I always use to shy away from photos and use to hate looking in mirrors for they were a constant reminder of how I only had a few wisps of hair left on the top. Imagine working in a warm climate like Thailand and in locations where there is no air conditioning people kindly adjusting a high powered fan, so it points in your direction, in order to keep you cool.  All the efforts of trying to 'piece together' my 'bits of hair' would be ruined in an instant.  I remember catching a glimpse of myself in a shop window, in the big shopping centre, and how this would automatically result in me re positioning my hair. All these previous experiences are history now, and yes it is a very liberating experience/feeling

I now spend time looking for good scalp products, looking to see what razor blades the drug stores have in stock.  I am no longer shy to be asked to be in a photo.  Yes, I know I am not handsome but what I do know is that my new look is one hundred times better than how I looked before.  I enjoy my time now shaving in a morning and not having to fuss over a few wisps of hair.

Once again all you guys on this forum your confidence and support now as a member and all the posts I read as a visitor are so much appreciated by me. Thank you.  one very happy SLY GUY.

Take care

Andy
