I'm new here but not a stranger to the clippers & blade... found this forum & have now rekindled my desire to get a blade out.
I am not sure what to do w my beard
Its really thick & idk whether to trim down to a goat or just have sideburns that run into the chrome...

Dood - it's just a matter of personal preference. I go back and forth from a full beard to a goatee to just stubble. The full beard doesn't usually last too long because I'm not crazy for how it feels. The goatee seems like the least maintenance for me so that's how I usually do it.

One thing I failed to mention is that 6 mos ago I went to a barber, she cut the top of my scalp & it bled for a few days. Ever since that incident, I've had a small red patch in that area, and dry skin/dandruff type flakes from it... if I go sly again. .. will I be better able to control it w nivea aftershave balm or hydrocortisone? I'm just kinda self conscious about it...

Do you ever want to grow it to a more extreme length? Longest I've ever had was 9 mos of chin growth and trimmed sides... its hard to make it long & well maintained

It has been long enough that it should be healed to the point where you can shave again. I do not know if putting steroids on it is a good idea, but you could be able to exfoliate the area and clean it better. It just depends on how you feel about that spot being more noticeable at the beginning.

Good advice, brother :)

It would be fun to experiment, but like you said, it would be hard to maintain it well and I seem to have less and less patience the older I get!

Welcome. A longer full beard takes less maintenance than a short beard, just stay away from scissors and trimmers. A little brushing and you are ready. Just keep the mustache trimmed every week or two, or use wax and let it grow as well. Depending on your growth, you may need to trim a straight line on the cheeks and the neckline. With a little length, you can go with a natural neckline.
If you want to try a full beard with a shaved dome, most guys just start shaving at approximately the location where eyeglass arms would sit. I prefer to shave about 1/4 inch below that point.
