Title: Buzz cut question
Post by: Country on October 08, 2013, 08:13:39 PM
I am new here and just wanted to get some opinions on my new haircut. First I will start by saying that I had a full head of hair in July. I had been noticing that when my hair was wet it looked thin. Thin enough you could see scalp. I have had a little recession on one side for a few years but it never bothered me. All of a sudden I was scared to go swimming with my son because it looked bad. When my hair was dry it looked fine, I didn't really have to try to cover anything up. Anyway I buzzed it down to a 3 and at first I thought it looked ok. Now I notice in sunlight or under other light it looks thin. I am learning to deal with it but I was wondering if maybe a 3 was to long. Under light u can see the horseshoe but in shade or low light it looks fine. I know you are going to want a picture but I was just wanting to know if going shorter would help or not. Thanks.

There is nothing that will stop people from seeing the thinning parts under strong light.  Shorter, as in very short, will make that less relevant though.  It really depends on what you would prefer.

Problem with hairloss is once it starts going and you cut it down, it can show the receeding more, which is why a lot of us go sly (i,e we take it all off) that way you can't see the hairline.

At your stage, longer hair MIGHT look better than the grade you have, otherwise I'd say go to a 1, 0 or all off.

It's a hard thing to face but you came to the right forum :)

Thanks for all the comments and advice. I have thought about growing it back out for duck season, it can get pretty cold on the river even in arkansas. My only problem with that is then i would be back to where I started and I didn't like it there. I might just keep what I have for the winter and go shorter in the spring. I have one more question though. Since I started losing hair I have had a itchy-flaky scalp. I tried every OTC shampoo I could think of and no relief. So I went to a dermatologist and he said seborrheic  dermatitis and gave me some drops that don't work and said use t-gel shampoo. After two weeks of daily use it is less itchy but still flaky and dry. Any advice would be appreciated I have never had this problem in my 30 yrs so its new to me.

A lot of guys with scalp issues have reported that after shaving their scalp issues cleared up.  The only way to know is to give it a try for about 30 days.  I previously had minor issues with flaking, but none since shaving.

I'm pretty sure I have MPB because of the pattern. I still think the SD might be making it worse. It seems like every time I scratch I have flakes and hair under my nails. It doesn't seem to matter where i scratch. My wife's says just don't scratch but that is easier said than done. I was hoping that cold weather would help because I work outside and wear a hat so the sweat irritates it. I don't think I'm ready to shave it all off though. I know everyone worries about how it will look but I'm 6'6" so I stand out anyway. Since reading on the forum I have realized I don't know a single person from my small town that shaves their head slick. Everyone just has a horseshoe or the younger guys might buzz down. Anyway I really enjoy this site and any comments or advice would be appreciated.

What part of Arkansas do you call home?

Hi Country,

I have heard guys say that shaving helped with their scalp issues because it was easier to apply lotions and other topical treatments to their scalp.  Plus, the exfoliation that occurs so regularly.  The only concern would be if your skin condition was irritated by the shaving.  I would ask the doctor's opinion.

As far as being the only one in your small town to have a shaven head... I say go for it.  You may be the trendsetter.  You said there are a good deal of horseshoe heads walking around.  You can show them how it's done.

Welcome, Country! It seems like that part of you wants to go ahead and do the deed, but others' reactions may concern you....which is perfectly normal. We have several members who have had scalp issues and they cleared up when they shaved. It's all in what do you want and what makes you happy....Not all of our members shave, and looking at the pic in your second post, I hardly see any thinning which means that you probably can get away with shorter haircuts a little longer before buzzing or going sly. As far as being a "big bald guy that stands out" we have several members that are on the north side of six feet tall and walk around proudly with bald heads, buzz cuts, etc. Good luck and keep us posted on your journey!

P.S. My uncle is from a small town in Eastern Ark.  about 40 miles to the west of Memphis....made a few trips up there as a young boy, but I haven't set foot in Ark. since 2008 when I went to N. Little Rock for military training.

Thanks SirHarry. You maybe right I don't think I'm ready yet but I can't say I haven't thought about it.

Ps.  I have a good friend that works out of Camp Robinson in North Little Rock.

Thanks SirHarry. You maybe right I don't think I'm ready yet but I can't say I haven't thought about it.

Ps.  I have a good friend that works out of Camp Robinson in North Little Rock.

The two weeks I spent up there in Camp Robinson was very rewarding...When we got downtime, I got to check out Downtown Little Rock and got to see the Clinton Library, ride the cable cars and check out a few other attractions. May take a weekend trip up there next spring just for the fun of it.

I would just like to say thank you to all of the nice folks that took the time to respond. I asked my wife if she thought I should grow it out or what, and she thinks I should leave it alone for now. I'm kind of glad because I don't think I could take growing it out because I have one side that recedes more than the other and it would be a while before it looked right. I still kind of have the urge to go shorter but I guess I'll be happy for the time being. I know I can't really offer others advice until I take charge of my own situation, but maybe I can hang around for support and other discussions. This really is a great community and any other advice is still welcome. Thanks guys

Nonsense, you can offer advice if you have some.  Not everyone here is bald, and no one required to be.  I think you've taken care of your issues just fine for now.

If you don't want to shave it all off yet, maybe you should try leaving it as it is on top, but shaving the sides and back even tighter.

The "horseshoe" might not be as pronounced, because there would be the illusion that the back and sides weren't as thick.

Just a thought.  As it stands, you look like you can still "get away with it" for a while, yet. :)

I started shaving when the top of my head started looking like the picture you posted. Sometimes we really need someone to tell us when it is time -- and most people are reluctant to offer unsolicited advice  of this nature.  But somebody has to do it, so I'm going to tell you that it's time.  :)

When you look in the mirror you still see a face framed by hair but you know it is thinning out and will only get worse.  Take a little more time if you need to but don't let it go too long because someday in the not too distant future you are going to look back and wish you'd acted on it sooner.  The anticipation of the deed is far more traumatic than actually doing it.  Postponing the inevitable only prolongs the agony.

I really wish that somebody had said something like this to me about 10 years ago.  Good luck.

Thanks Razor X.  I always like your post because you are blunt and to the point. I really wish I felt comfortable enough to just get it over with but I don't. I don't know how long it will take but I feel like I'm finally get used to the buzzed look. I think that photo is about the worst at that angle under bright light. I know I'm trying to justify my own reasoning but I guess that's just human nature. I probably will go shorter and shorter until its gone but I think y'all have helped me accept it is what it is.

Country, I know this is still your introductory thread, but I just wanted to add a suggestion if you are still having trouble with your scalp. Washing your scalp every few days with Noxzema or Sea Breeze may help clear the pores and may stop your scalp from itching so much. It may not work for everyone, but when I had surgeries on my scalp in late 2011 and early 2012, I used these items and it stopped the itching (not to mention it smelled great). Just a suggestion.

Welcome to the forum, Country!!

I know your feelings, I had done a very similar course, going tighter and tighter. I also had VERY flaky scalp and it would itch - maybe not as much as yours but still... and yes, you'd see the flakes drift down after scratching it. After I went smooth both issues vanished. Once in a while I will get a little itch here and there, but rarely and certainly not as much as before.

In time, I imagine you'll get comfortable with the idea of going sly. It's not a huge leap when you've been consistently short. When you go shorter and shorter, the transition becomes less and less 'shocking'.

Something like Sea Breeze may help, or even an application/use of Witch Hazel may work too. Good luck and hopefully you'll keep posting. Your advice and knowledge is just as valuable - sly or not - to others experiencing the same feelings and concerns.
