I'd been on the fence about shaving the head for a while. Started with just going as close as the clippers would go and did this for a year or so, but wanted more (or less?).
So I finally took the plunge and went right down to the wood. Lovin it. Only problem is I need to do it every day to keep it smooth. I took the simple step of buying an anti-fog mirror for the shower and that's been a blessing.
An old friend of mine used to wax, but I'm no longer able to contact him for input. Has anyone here tried it out? Pros? Cons?

Welcome! While waxing is an alternative to everyday shaving, and could give you a smoother head longer; it could lead to possible discolorations on your scalp. Further, the hairs in some areas are thicker than others which could lead to possible patching. I would strongly advise against waxing, but if you want to be bald permanently and have some bucks to spend, laser treatments could be a better option.

This sounds painful

This. Also, waxing is also unbelievably painful (had body waxing done once before....once).

Well women always complain that waxing is painful.
AND....... real men don't wax. :)

Yep. My wife once challenged me to wax my head if I wanted to get a clue as to what women go through for beauty.
Not only did I not accept her offer, I quickly informed her that I had no desire to find out about childbirth either.
I actually enjoy shaving each morning.

I'm uncomfortable with comments that question other's masculinity. I think being born male makes us real men. I don't wax myself, but I think if anyone here does, it would not make him any less real or any less of a man. :-\

I believe he was just giving a hard time. I don't actually think he believes that. If you want to wax your entire body, go for it, but it's not pleasant!
-
No wax for me. I will stick with soap... :)

Thus the smiley after the comment. It was tongue in cheek. I really don't care if a guy waxes or not... none of my business.
Sarcastic humor can run freely around this place sometimes Marshal so you better step up your game!!! ;D
Plano has been around a while so he knows this... thanks for the support Plano!

I'm going to agree with the guys, and like Cave, I actually enjoy shaving the dome. I just don't get some of you who wish to completely remove all hair from your head, whether it be by waxing or laser. In fact, there is a lengthy thread on this in on of the other sections.
Now as far as body hair, I'm all for removal of it, especially back hair. Something is definitely not right when you have more hair on your back than your head, lol. ;)

The pain isn't an issue for me. I know that sounds like a macho comment, but it's not meant to be. For 30 days of hair free I'd go through the pain.
What has me scared more is the other stuff. Patching if I ever decide to grow hair? Color patches on the skin? Hmmm lemme think about this a minute....no thanks.
Unlike many of you, I actually despise the act of shaving. Whether it be the face, head or anything else. To me it's just something else I gotta do to get ready in the morning. Don't get me wrong. I admire the fact that you can take such pleasure in such a simple thing. It's just not me. Hence my looking for a more semi-permanent solution. But I don't want totally permanent. Thankfully I'm not a hairy guy overall.
I think for now I'll stick with the shaving.
And I have to add, Cave Dwellers comments were so opposite of his nickname choice it made me laugh. Not in an offensive way mind you, just odd.
And Koz. Careful, you'll make me cry O0

Hey, I laugh at myself most of the time. So does my wife for that matter. If you want to laugh as well, it is fine by me, sir, and welcome to my club.
Seriously, though, if waxing does not eventually result in permanent baldness (which some guys want) it probably will at least result in a permanently downy, fine hair. The roots just cannot take getting that kind of stress for very long
I initially started growing a beard in college because I naively thought it would mean I would not have to shave. Then I discovered how much the hair on my throat grew each day.

Oops. Sorry bout that Cave. I attributed the wrong name to the comment I was referring to!! My bad. And I agree with you on the childbirth thing. That is definitely an experience that women can keep all for themselves.
I was referring to the comment by Marshalartist.
Now that I see my error, I guess it's not so funny any longer.
No offense intended to either of you.

Massive amounts of relief. I thought you were gong all Dustin Hoffman "Tootsie" on us.

Yeah, I don't understand what's funny either. My name is Marshal. . .which was already taken. I'm also an amateur artist and a professional clinical psychologist. Perhaps that provides some perspective for you.
I am still of the opinion that it is inappropriate to impune someone's gender identity. I don't think that's funny at all.
-
Again Marshal.... a joke. Lighten up. I thought my PM to you explained it well enough. No need to get in a snit on the open Forum.
Even Duurti himself cracked a smile(y)!
Duurti ... if my humor offended you, please PM me and I'll give you the same explanation I gave Marshal. My bet is that it didn't offend you.... but you can PM me anyway if you want to!!! ;D
-
I think I have as much right to say what I think as you do. I apologize if what I think offends you. I don't happen to agree with you. I don't think it's funny.

Now that's funny!!!!!!! What you think doesn't offend me. I don't get offended very easily. :) There does come a time when it's time to stop beating on it and since you're the only one that has complained about it... well, never mind.
I'm done.... check your PMs please!
I won't respond to this type of thing anymore.
My apologies to the OP for sullying his thread with this stuff.
Carry on gentlemen!! Now back to waxing.
Look.. to each his own. If you think waxing will work for you, please try it! But please come back to the Forum and give us your thoughts on it. I'm not sure we've ever had anyone on the Forum that has tried it.
I can tell you this... not for me. I don't even like plucking stray nose hairs!! Ouch!
-
If your hair grows reasonably fast, the best way to get a longer lasting shave is to get as smooth of a shave as you can. If you can get a nice and close shave you can probably shave every other day. when you're putting lotion on after you shave don't be afraid to run your razor over areas that feel like they need it (no shaving cream just run the bladeover those areas).
-
I've never tried it, but I will admit that the thought has crossed my mind to try it -- albeit on a very limited basis. I'd like to get rid of the stragglers I have left on top and the remnants of my hairline. It would be nice not to have to shave the top of my head. I don't think there would be much, if any, pain involved. Once in a while on a day I haven't shaved, I'll pluck out a few hairs on top with a tweezers, it's amazing how quickly and painlessly they come loose. After a couple of waxing sessions they'd probably disappear for good.
There's no way I would attempt to apply hot wax to my scalp on my own, and I don't have the patience to grow the hair out long enough for the wax to grab hold, so I've never tried it. I would not even think about trying it on the fringe area. That would be extremely painful and I imagine it could probably lead to a lot of ingrown hairs and scalp irritation. I have very sensitive skin so I wouldn't be a good candidate for that type of experiment. Thank goodness shaving is easy and relatively painless. :)

It wasn't what you said that was funny. You stated your thoughts, all good on that count.
What I found funny, more ironic I guess, was that I had originally, accidentally, attributed the quote to Cave Dweller. Now read your original post, and think of that being typed by a person using the name "Cave Dweller".....
Koz, we're good. I think our sense of humor meshes just fine.

I hear ya Razor.
I'm diggin the Sly look but who knows what the future holds. Perhaps down the road I'll go back. That is what has me worried about waxing, the after effects.
The reason I had interest is because my head is white. I mean glow in the dark white. And I don't tan. I go from white, to red, back to white. Certain parts of me tan, the parts that see sun every single day. My arms, face, and legs. But that's it.
My hair is dark, so I see the dark shadow all the time, even after a fresh shave. Maybe I notice it so much because of my glowy white scalp.
-
The whiteness does go away eventually -- or at least it becomes less pronounced. It just takes time for your scalp, which has hasn't seen the light of day in years, to darken a bit. As for the shadow, don't worry about it. Most people don't even notice.
Regarding waxing, if it is done for an extended period of time, it can cause permanent hair loss so you need to be VERY sure you don't mind being permanently bald before you head down that road. Remember that it's always nice to have options and shaving allows us to retain the ones that Mother Nature hasn't taken away. :)

Folks:
I am looking for some insight. I am now 2 months SLY and loving it. So clean, so cool, so comfortable. Absolutely, can't believe I ever worried about my head/hair. Never again. But I do have a question... Shine or no-shine? What is prefered? If shine, how is the best way to get one. I think I would prefer it. How do I maintain it? is it Aloe, Gloss from Headblade or wax? If it is wax, what brand and where do I get it?
Just looking for some info? Thanks,

I prefer the shiny look and my head is naturally shiny. Just natural body oils. Give both ways a try!!
-
Slystone, If it's shine you prefer you will want to give HeadLube Glossy from HeadBlade a try.
