Ditto!! :-\

When I was at the gym yesterday, I got into a conversation with my trainer who is about 25 or 26.  He asked me if a lot of my friends had afros when I was growing up.  I just said, "Uh, wrong generation.  I'm not that old!" So he changed the question from afros to parachute pants, to which I had to respond with a reluctant "yes".

BTW, do they not make "Trapper Keepers" anymore??

I actually knew Lisa Whelchel back in the 80's when she was doing a tour promoting her album. I was doing some photographic work for her grandmother Velma French sp Velma could make a scrapbook for Lisa. I went all over the place, from Maine to Georgia. It was fun. I even got to meet Lisa a few times.

The best meeting though was in Rumford Maine. The Pastor of the church that set up the concert and I really hit it off. He was a funny guy, easy to get along with. After the concert, he asked me if I would like to grab a quick cup of coffee and discuss the photo shoot I just did. Sure, I said. We stepped in an office like room and there she was. Just me, Lisa, the Pastor, and a couple of other people who were at the coffee machine. I felt like this   :D  She is a really nice person in real life. Not like her character.

And yes, she is just as hot in person as she was on TV. I was in  :@`

I wonder how Lisa would think of me bald today though.  :*))

She wasn't in Land of the Lost.  That was some blond chick who wore braids and a checkered shirt.  Valerie Bertinelli was in One Day At A Time, before she married Eddie Van Halen and went on to do Jenny Craig commercials with Kirstie Alley.

Yea, I hear ya...especially towards the end when they "girled her up" more...but then just when you were diggin' the new Jo....BAM, you kinda get grossed out when they bring the male version of her on the show ...hairstyle and all.....

remember when George Clooney joined the cast...him and Jo looked the same...both had those big mullets...kinda creepy...

if you looked back, the dudes and the girls really looked similar during that time, more than we thought when we were livin' it :(

Yeah, I don't know who that girl was, but it definitely wasn't Valerie.  I remember that girl's character name was 'Holly.'  I wonder if she ever made it with Chaka, or maybe the Sleestax (sp?) finally got her.

Ok, if you guys want a challenge of the 80's, I have a couple of questions fer ya:

Who played Bob Denvers sidekick in the TV show "Far Out Space Nuts"? (Extra bonus if you can tell me what type of rocket they lifted off with)

What TV show did the TV series "The Real Ghost Busters" parody when they got their mission?

You got the first part right.  O0  But I'm referring to the actual rocket that was launched. Not the vessel they flew in.  ;)

Maybe this video will help:

And as an added bonus. There was a blooper I happened to notice. Tell me what it was and I'll give you a double kudos.  O0

I was really beginning to feel lost because I don't remember Far Out Space Nuts at all.  And no wonder -- a Google search revealed that it ran for about half a season in 1975.

You got it part right. I'm referring to the launch vehicle itself.

And RazorX, it was in the 70's and not 80's, you're right. That means I'm older then I thought I was.  :-[

Alright, I won't torcher you guys any longer.  ;)

For the first question, they launched the Saturn V moon rocket. But I still won't reveal the answer to the bonus part of the question regarding the blooper.  A sharp eye is needed, but if you know your launch vehicles, you will spot it right off the bat in the intro video.

That is the only hint I will give. :)

The second question has not been answered yet. So I will still give it some more time.   >:D

Ok, I gave you guys two days and only got one answer correct.  ;D

Here is the answers to the remaining two, the bonus question in Far Out Space Nuts regarding the blooper in the opening of the show: They shown two rockets, the Saturn V launch vehicle in one scene, and it cut to the launch of a Saturn IB (The Saturn V's little brother) for a part, then returned back to the Saturn V after launch.

Reminds me of "I Dream of Jeanie" opening when they showed a launch of the Saturn V in one scene, and a sequence of the flight of the Mercury Atlas in the next scene. I guess you'd REALLY have to be a "Far Out Space Nut" like myself to spot the difference.  :*))

And the answer to the question, what TV show did the TV show "The Ghost Busters" spoofed when they got a mission? The answer was Mission Impossible. When they got their mission, whatever the recording was contained in (a bunch of flowers, a banana, a cream pie, etc) it "self destructed" when the recording was finished, usually in the apes hands, and lots of times making a real mess of things.

Now the bonus BONUS question. Who stared in "The Ghost Busters" and for what other TV show were they famous for?

EDIT: The TV Show "The REAL GhostBusters" was an animated show of the 80's. The actual TV show I am referencing in called "The GhostBusters" and it aired in the 70's. Sorry for the confusion if there were any. ;) Now it's time to put your thinking caps on. But just don't cover that Sly look!  O:O

And the super-duper BIG bonus question, and if you get it wrong, you'll have to grow it back.  O0 WHY was the animated 80's show called "The REAL Ghost Busters, and not simply named "The GhostBusters"? There was a reason. What was that reason?

Brah Warhawk

I'm a child of year 56 man heck we still had black and white pictures, round tv screens, tube am and fm radio's, and the price of gas.... 15 cents a gallon.  I can remember using playing cards to make my bike sound like a chopper until Wammo products came out with the little battery operated motor for bikes.  My first bike had balloon tires and I pulled my Little Red Wagon behind along with my Red Rider pop gun and wearing my six shooters on my side.  We didn't know what Bling Bling was etc, I think you get the picture.

I can still in my mind see when President Kennedy got taken out by Lee Harvey Oswald, and the Cuban Missle Crissis.  I still remember when President Kennedy said, "Don't ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"

I clearly remember Kent State and what happend there during the Vietnam War days, and then serving in the USAF from 74 - 76  I remember the smell of San Francisco when they burned a big stash of grass in the city burners..... aaaaaahhh inhale  ::)

But moving up thru the years, has sure been fun Brah

Warhawk, in the final sequence, you are correct about his copilot's call sign and name  But after Goose was killed, Maverick's first copilot was 'Sundown' played by Clarence Gilyard, the black partner Jimmy Trivette from Walker, Texas Ranger.  No, I didn't remember his call sign; I had to look it up.  I also never realized that Tim Robbins played Merlin; I'm going to have to pull out my old VHS tape and give it another look.

John Schneider is an excellent singer and had a good string of hits in the mid-80s.  I've always wondered why he didn't stick with his singing career.  He still gets a fair amount of airplay on the Music Choice Country Classics channel.    I miss him in Smallville; he was really good as Clark's dad.

No to either, Warhawk and I never wore bicycle shorts under a mini skirt.

Speaking from experience, you're not living until you wear a mini-skirt, Nomad.  :D

Let me explain.....

During my senior year, we had a warm spell in our hometown. Girls were allowed to wear mini-skirts but boys at our high school were not permitted to wear shorts, despite the fact that the other public high school in our district allowed boys to wear shorts. As I was in student government and had access to certain workings behind the scenes, I convinced several guys (including a few football players) to wear mini-skirts in protest.

Well the morning of the event, our principal came into the student government session and went nuts. I was seated, so my legs were not visible, as were 3 or 4 other guys. The principal then stated....AND I QUOTE "If boys want to wear mini-skirts, have them transfer to the San Francisco school district". Well, that was in 1984 and he was pushing 60 at the time (very "old school"). While all this was going on, I knew someone in the local paper's editorial department who I kept informed of all this. He took pictures of male students at the other school wearing shorts and ran the photo of me and the other guys who were suspended for the day while wearing the mini-skirts. KTVU (our local Fox affiliate, before it was Fox) was all set to run a little piece on the story, but the weenie football players feared reprecussions from the coach and others, so we all declined in solidarity. My newspaper contact also ran my "letter to the editor" the day after we got suspended when I quoted the principal (along with a few choice words of my own). Apparently he got a little flack from the City of SF. Our assistant school principal thought my editorial letter was one of the funniest things he had ever read.

During our graduation ceremony, while on stage, the school superintendent thanked me for being instrumental in welcoming him to the school district and making his first year a memorable one.

Oh, boys at our high school are still permitted to wear shorts (not sure about miniskirts). If I can dig out my high school yearbook, I'll scan that page.

i was born in '73. never really enjoyed the '80s. '90s were a whole lot more fun for me. started them in colorado and graduated in '92. still can' stand anything '80s. drives me nucking futs. i do like the '90s stuff better. music was better, styles were better. just like the '90s better. Yes, I figure that I'm an 80's kid.  That's when I graduated high school and college, got my first real job and bought my first house.  The wife and kids didn't come along until the 90's.

Based on the high school graduation theory, I am a child of the 90's. However, sinve my "formative years", ages 4-14 were in the 80's, I consider my self a child of the 80's. I grew up playing the Commodore 64 so I say that I am definitely a 80's kid!!

I would say Im an 80's kid.....although im still a kid in 2007... ;D  I was more of a late 80's kid.  I think my favorite years growing up was from about 1984-90.  The last 4 years of the 80's was the best.

I agree. The only thing I can remember is starting in 1995, the rush to update all the computers for the big 2000 crash, plus the Prince song 1999 playing over and over again.......
Here's a IT question for all the computer brothers on the site, how many were sitting in their office for the 2000 rollover waiting for the power to go out and computers to crash???
1 here!!

I gotta agree with you here, Nomad. I had some excellent times in both decades.
The eighties, about '84 thru 89 were my heavy metal years, and we had some really good times then. Wait til I get my pictures up. I had some of the best times then.
Had a lot of good times in the late 70's too, come to think of it.

The one thing about the 1980's that stands out in my mind is what I perceived to be a return to conservatism.  It seems that clothing, economics, music, and literature, etc., swung to a (compared to the 1960's and 1970's) more traditional and conservative bend.  These things are, of course, go in cycles.

I think the 70's were alot more conservative than the 80's with the polyester slacks and dress shirts. Maybe I was into the hair band stage with the leather and women wearing the mini-mini skirts. I think the 80's was more a shock culture time with Wendy-o of the plasmatics and the hair bands. And I will never forget Pat Benatar in concert with the leather mini skirt and powerful voice. I left a puddle of drool on the floor!!

Lets also not forget the Madonna "party-hat" breast!!

The group that I hung with was definitely more conservative!!  We went to Kahki pants and polos ... and seemed to join Young Republicans en masse (perhaps they had better parties!).  Of course, a lot of that dealt with the party in power at the time.

Perhaps the best memory of the 80's though was the fall of the Berlin Wall

I do remember a ton of people dressing like Jerry Sienfeld dresses nowadays (tucked in shirt to jeans and what appears to be huge bright white tennis shoes).

I also remember that Miami Vice look going around...

Rob, I believe it was the Sony walkman, and CD's, which led to portable cd players.
In turn, it just about sounded the death knoll for cassette tapes.

"False" is correct.....'80's were marked by the HIGHEST interest rates on record.   Mortgage rates were in the teens!!!!!!

weren't the 90's worse?

High interest rates are good and bad.....bad when it comes to mortgages, credit cards, etc........good when it comes to what banking/investment products pay YOU.

The lowest rates on record hit just recently in 2002/2003 (forget which one).

I thought it was something by Elton John.

I can remember when MTV first went on the air -- we didn't have cable in our neighborhood, but it caused quite a brouhaha in the areas that did.  In those days there were few, if any "cable" channels.  My grandparents had cable and all that was really offered were the local channels and broadcast channels from another viewing area (Baltimore, MD in our case).  And there might have been a couple of New York stations thrown in.  So you had your choice of at least two and in some cases three of each network affiliate to choose from -- which meant that during prime time hours, the same program was available on two or three different channels (big freaking deal).  When the cable company dropped the ABC affiliate from Baltimore to make room for MTV, there was a huge outcry from the older people who just didn't "get" the whole concept of music videos.

Bob Geldolf of the Boomtown Rats got a bunch of well-known British musicians together to record a single for African famine relief.   The group was known as Band Aid and the song was called "Don't They Know It's Christmas".  Shortly thereafter, a group of American recording artists formed "USA For Africa" and recorded "We Are The World" and a group of Canadian musicians formed Northern Lights and recorded "Tears Are Not Enough".  These recordings led to the Live Aid Concert held in London and Philadelphia in July 1985.

Do you guys remember that poster in the 80's of a blonde chick with soap suds where a bikini should be and washing an exotic car?  It was in the movie  license to drive in Corey's room above his bed.  I tried finding a pic, but I couldn't find it.

Anyways, I had that poster and I know a bunch of other guys that had it too.  I don't know of a guy that had that poster that didn't "dream" about that girl.  Well, one day in college my roommate brings up this poster while were were drinking beer and we all start talking about it in a very candid way.  Then he breaks out with, "Yeah, that's going to be my new step mom!"  His dad ended up marrying her and had a kid with her.  Anyways, I got to meet her not too long after that and I had that the hardest time holding back one of those grins that says "if you only knew what I was thinking" and my buddy is sitting there laughing the whole time because he knows EXACTLY what I'm thinking.  >:D
