since we r celebrating the 4 of july, many of us will b grilling. i'm a charcoal man when i grill. i know that it is difficult w/ mess and cleanup but the overall product of that charcoal taste does NOT compare 2 the gas/propane grills. so.... what do u grill with: charcoal or propane??? i prefer charcoal. and U???

Hey, just because I love Kansas City BBQ. I don't even try to cook it. The times that I have have not been pretty. I keep it simple with burger, dogs, brats, and the occasional steak.

I think this is a question for Hank Hill and the Hill family from "King of the Hill"...
I think if u ask him, the answer you will get is "Strickland Propane and Propane Assecories" only........
(Alright, for the people who aren't geeks like me and dont watch King of the Hill, there was an episode where this very question came up....geez i gotta explain everything huh....)
-
Can you legally cook with gas?? :/O
I rarely use charcoal briquets anymore... I've that the Hardwood Lump charcoal is much better! Burns hotter and longer and gives a really good flavor!
Brands:
Kingsford
Cowboy
Royal Oak (I think)

Charcoal or propane? Should be no choice. Charcoal is for real men. Meat tastes better that way. When it comes to my meat (and grilled veggies) I can't afford to be lazy.
-
Gotta go with propane. I don't have the time to wait for charcoal and don't have the time for the messy cleanup with ashes. Plus, I enjoy it too often to not use propane.
-
i went to my inlaws today and ate. i'll be damned if he didn't go buy himself a gas grill this morning. tell ya what, damn thing cooks the hell outta some steaks. personally i like the flavor of charcoal or real wood. but the damn thing did a pretty good job. but i'm keeping my charcoal/wood pit.
-
My folks got an Aussie Gas Grill. Does a helluva steak
-
Propane for me, use an aluminum pan with apple wood for smoke flavor
-
Weber Genesis propane here. Use it at least twice a week in the summer. Fast, propane tanks lasts forever before needing to be refilled and it does a great job on everything. Fired it up tonight for a big ol' salmon I caught at Costco recently.

:*)) :*)) :*))
Same for me. I use propane. I also love to go Salmon fishing at Sam's Club. Catch me some whoppers there! O0
-
at home it's propane as we are always rushed,, with work, house chores, keeping the outside clean and neet but when I go fishing our hunting or just taking a ride up in the woods, I get the disposable charchoal they work great.. since we are in the woods to relax we just take our time.[/tt]
-
Propane here....and damn proud of it. To Paul's point, you can add wood chips for flavor.
When I use the smoker, I'll fill it with mesquite, apple, hickory or pecan chips depending on it.

I was talking to my brother-in-law about this the other day and I came up with a good idea. I'm going to design a hybrid grill. I'm going to pipe gas into the grill, but only as a quick way to start the charcoal.
This should allow me to still be lazy, yet get the flavor that I like.

That's a million dollar idea there.

That is sweet...work on the same concept as a gas start fireplace O0

Why don't you just get something like this?
http://tinyurl.com/2ar9xq
Works well, and wouldn't be any harder to use then the propane starter, there for your able to continue grilling the lazy way.
I'm charcoal all the way now.
-
I've tried those in the past and they still take a long time to get the coals fired up. With the gas, I wouldn't have to wait to start cooking since the gas would be used to cook the meat after it filters through the charcoal.
-
I think the propane would burn the charcoal to quick, if you left it on long enough so you can turn the gas off and cook with charcoal, but who knows. What I've done in the past with a gas grill is I got a cast iron box from Lowes, that is made to put wood chips in, soak the wood chips, put them in the box and set it on the grill with the meat, close the lid and you get a nice smoked flavor without all the work.

or this:(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fre3.mm-a3.yimg.com%2Fimage%2F2543398158&hash=fa47e57c31e8a7179fa1f7e309b3d38cf1fe6461)
hell, i'd let her light my coals.
-
Yeah, the idea still needs some testing. I've done the wood chips method before as well as a cedar plank.
-
You could test it in your gas grill, just need another grate, to set above the burners, that you can put the charcoal on. Would be between the burners and the grill part you cook on.

Are you using that plank with propane Tyler? Have always wanted to try cedar, we use maple here on charcoal grill and its awesome. Don't know if our cedar same as western and what kind of flavor that would give.
-
Ceder is ceder, doesn't matter where it's from. Try mesquite or aspen if you can find some, both add an awesome flavor.
-
Plenty of aspen up north. Will definitely give it a try.
-
I'm a big fan of Propane, i'm personal friends with Hank Hill, he sells me my propane and propane accessories.
With propane you can taste the meat not the heat. and also easier to manage with no chemical run off after burns it's a clean burn with no chemical bi products.
That all being said I do enjoy an occasional burger cooked over a charcoal flame.

Yep. I have a bbq that I'm going to test the idea with before I get in to deep with my idea. I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah, the plank is on the propane grill. It's a pretty nice flavor, especially for salmon.

What about a wood fire?
I think that a wood fire is actually the best....
thats how we cook our shish kabobs.... but not all wood is the same...gotta find fruit trees wood and they burn for a while with a great fire smell (adds to the taste)
I never cook on propane because the taste of propane in the meat when u eat it kills me....charcoal is also a rarity (only when i run out of wood)
For a good steak or shish kabobs, you will always find the time....

Hate to be the bubble burster, but if you put the food on before the charcoal has ashed over, your food would be covered in a dark soot...
I use one of these... starts the charcoal (or hardwood lump) very quickly and I don't have to be a pussy and use propane or lighter fluid! :*))

I used one of these too ... actually it's quite easy.

Looks too high tech to eat food with for me!
Actually, it's very easy... some newspaper in the bottom, fill the main part up with the coals of your choice, light the paper and about 10 minutes later, the coals are red hot and ready to cook with. Dump them in your grill and start cooking!
-
There's actually a much easier way...Open the lid, turn the burner knobs and hit the light button!

still think my method of lighting the coals was better.

always charcoal never tried propane sometime maybe
-
Charcoal man myself. I just love the flavor of charcoal cooked food. Also, large bottles of a highly flammable liquid and sparks make me a little nervous.
-
Prefer charcoal, but never have the time. Propane works best for our schedules....
-
grew up with charcoal; jumped ship to propane in early to mid 80s; went back to charcoal in 90/91. like mix different woods with charcoal now. probably never go back to gaz again

So am I to assume that you do not use lighter fluid?
Personally, I use propane out of convenience, but I do like using charcoal when I can, just to change things up.
