Title: DE Newbie..
Post by: wutwutman on July 23, 2013, 10:07:24 AM
Ok after reading tons of posts and watching dozens of videos, I think I want to try using a DE.  It's the only step I'm lacking in my "traditional" wet shave routine.  So guys.. what do you recommend for a first DE?  I'm  looking for low cost (in case I don't stick with it), and low aggression.  Don't want to slice myself up LOL

Oh and blades... any blades that are more conducive to newbie shavers?  I've read tons of posts on blades and i'm still confused I guess lol

Thanks!

IMO try a Parker 82R with Derby Extra blades. I have a couple in my collection and still use them from time to time. Is not too aggressive yet still gives a decently close shave. I paid around $20 for mine.

Thanks! That right about what I want to pay for a first one too!

As for blades I'd suggest getting a sampler pack on Amazon. I tend to order my DE handles on eBay then get the blades on Amazon. I'm currently using an Edwin Jagger 89.

For cheap but functional check out The Lord razors.  I think the model I have cost around 10 dollars.  Another option at low price is the Feather Popular.
A blade sampler is also a good idea, then when you find out what you like you can buy in bulk.

I bought 200 for £6 shark I think they are called...better than the Wilkinson sword ones that cut me every time! these are so cheap I use a fresh one every time

The best DEs for a noob: EJ DE89, or the Merkur 33c (what I started with).

If you want to be a bit confident, get a Merkur 37c slant -- one of the best headshavers due to the angle of the blade.

I've got the Edwin jagger DE89 Barley as well. It's a beautiful razor. I'm just using the derby blades that came with it but also have a sampler pack which will take years to get through at this rate

Don't forget to get a the stand that goes with it if you get the de89
