Never used a DE razor in my life, but want one to shave the dome. Store owners say the 37 slant is way too dangerous for first timers, and that i should go with ejagger. So i must turn to my knowledgeable sly mates. Which should i buy as a first one, i want BBS shaves with no irritations.
thanks O0

Hi Frangi: As an owner of both fine razors. . . I would go with the EJ89L. It is a good starter DE razor and also a great razor for any newbie or veteran. I still have mine.
The 37C is for the more experienced DE shaver. Once you get your technique at a comfortable level than the 37C will be a perfect fit. The 37C is not an aggressive razor but rather a very efficient razor.
If you do some research at badgerandblade.com on a 37C. . . most will tell you that the 37C is not aggressive and also most will tell you to go with the EJ89L.
Since this is your 1st time. . . I would be very patient on your DE shaves because the traditional way of shaving is more challenging.
Keep us posted and enjoy your shaves,

I own both and in fact the 37C is the current one in use ( I rotate through 6 modern razors and use an antique one from time to time).
As I wrote frangi in a PM a couple of days ago the 37C is not aggressive, just very efficient. Although I prefer the 37C I would still suggest the 89L to anyone as a first DE purchase. The 89L is a good benchmark to use when describing any razor, If you bought the Merkur 37C you would never know what a great razor it is.
I also point out that frangi initially posted about a Merkur 34. I am glad that I convinced him that the EJ89 is a better choice. I own 3 Merkur razors and only one Edwin Jagger. The EJ is better built when you look at the machining and the finish. The Merkurs are good, the EJ is better. When I have the money I will treat myself to one one of the "best" stainless steel razors

Hey , thanks for the advice. I ordered the EJ from mens essentials on the danforth. Will it give bbs shave, maybe i should have put my money towards 37c ?
thanks

The EJ gives a BBS shave no problem and if you push down slightly (still less than what you normally would need to with a cartridge) you'll get the BBS and pinpricks of blood combo happening
