Hey everyone.
After a few months of looking at this forum Ive finally signed up and posted. Let me just say that its a great community and I stumbled upon it by accident. I am 28 and for years have been considering changing my look and shaving my head down to the scalp. The urge started about 10 years ago when my mate did it and I loved how it looked and felt but as my style had never changed I never had the guts to do it.
Now fast forward about 5 years later, I started to get a touch of scalp psorises which is something my Dad and his brother suffered with in their 20's. It can be treat with shampoos etc but it can cause alot of flaking and ever since then I have always been paranoid about my hair and if flakes are noticable or not, I hide it well under my mop but im constantly thinking about it and I feel the weight of the world!
Now intresting thing is my Dad and my uncle have been free of it for years - what did they do? they were simply advised to shave their heads and they gave it a try and after using the shampoo on their heads they were flake free within 24 hours. I read up on this and read similar stories from people on the net and they have had similar success and its something to do with the air and light getting to scalp and the medication getting to the scalp rather then being blocked by the hair.
Despite this and despite the fact Ive always been a fan of the look, ive never had the guts to do it. Here is a picture and I would love advise from everyone here as to what I should do? My house mate thinks I should and has some clippers annd said to just tell him if im ever ready and he will do it.
Thanks for reading!

If you've got the itch -- and it sounds like you've been wanting to scratch it for a long time -- just go with it.
There's no downside as, in the unlikely event you aren't thrilled with the freedom from worry that you will feel, it grows back!
Go ahead, give it a try. There's nothing to lose except needless worry about your hair.
-
Welcome, Steve! As Sly Bear said, if you have the urge, go for it, and if you don't like it, it will indeed grow back....Your condition may improve some even if you just no-guarded your hair instead of full shaving with the razor...but you have a nice-shaped head that would look good sly...Good luck!
-
I think it is time for the housemate to get out the clippers and give you a shave down. I think you will look HOT! Time to scratch the itch :@`
-
Thanks for the positive comments so far... what has been said does make a lot of sense and I really thought by posting and getting responses like this would make it easy lol. But even though I agree with what is being said im still finding it hard to actually go threw with it after talking about it.
Just so nervous and I think its more difficult that all my life ive had the same look etc so its hard :s
-
Welcome, Stevef
Feeling nervous is very common and natural.
You just have to start. After that, the anxiety goes away and you will look forward to seeing the finished look.
I never have regretted going sly.
-
thanks. any guidance? shaving foam etc may irrate my scalp further, so what can i do to get it all off?
-
Welcome stevef. Like the other guys said. Go for it. you will like the bald look. O0
-
Why not get a barber to do it the first time. It's a positive experience. The real advantage yopu have identified is that you will clear up the scalp problem once and for all. Hair will always grow back if you don't like the look - but am sure you will.
-
thanks!
i wanna avoid barbers as by that time id talk myself out of it!
-
Welcome, and thanks for posting, Steve.
I just worked my hair down a bit at a time. #4, then #3, then #2 etc. And one day I took off the guard and buzzed my head. Did it myself. Easy to do. No need for a barber. The no guard buzz was almost bald. Now that I go back and look at picture of that day, I looked bald, but it wasn't until I got out the razor and shaved it bald that it FELT bald. And once I did that, I was sold. I've been shaving my head bald ... as the ticker shows. Almost 17 month's. I plan to continue until I'm unable. Really like the bald look.
You'll look good bald, too.
-
You will enjoy once you have done it. Buzz it short and proceed to shave - many different tools will work fine. People seem to have their own choice and procedures.
-
guys thanks so much for the support and patience. I regret that nothing has changed yet, I was going to go for it last night then just couldnt go threw with it. So im thinking will tonight be the night as cant keep doing this - i was actually shaking from nerves last night. I just need another push and someone to try take the time to guide me in detail of best thing to do from start to finish so i get this done.
Also, I tried something else new last week and got my ears pierced for the first time. I have enclosed a recent pic taken last night showing the ears and the mop of hair I have now, to see if people still think would look good.

If you can get your ears pierced, then shaving your head will be a breeze. Reach for that razor. ;)

The Best Gift You Can Give Yourself Is a Smooth Bald Head O0

as easy as that? i felt that the piercing was a big deal for me and something id always wanted to do.. expected pain but didnt hurt and afterwards i really liked it.
my scalps been pretty bad today due to the hair coming in quite bushy and thick and the weather being really hot. I just dunno... ill commit maybe if someone can give me a step by step plan asap?
i just dunno

Sorry for my English, but I'm not a native speaker. I suppose you want to change your appearance. A first step you have done and you say you like your earrings. I think just as easily and with a similar success it will be, when you give yourself a new haircut that you really want a long time. Each needs its own time, but when you finally have a bald head, you wonder, why you have not done it before. Go ahead and take the mob down. I think you'll look good and you will like your new style. O0
-
I'm a bit biased but earrings go well with shaved heads, IMO.....
-
ie aays thought that too!
-
bald head and earring is not a bad look. You're half way there.
-
with all this encourgment im feeling tonight may be the night.
ive read some health care forums and to shave it with a razor is risky due to the psorises, but my dad and uncle were pretty much bald without doing that.. whats the best way to go mega short without that.
im feeling more positive now.. wether i do or not is totally differnt lol!
-
I agree and say just do it. As they all said, at the WORST CASE SCENERIO, it's a bad haircut and within a week you will have fuzz. Please note that you will have a pale scalp and likely discover a few moles and spots, shave carefully with a new razor and show off some pic's. good luck, I agree that I think it will look great. ( by the wy, a first shower on scalp feels strange. Watch the videos and how-to's and then go for it. My beat devices a hot shower and open the pores is important.
-
If you cannot use a razor, use a hair clipper without combs or set to the shortest length possible. You will not be smooth, but the look will be almost identical.
My wife's business partner does it that way, and it really looks like he shaves.
Once you start to take it off, the anxiety goes away.
-
so you think once i start the anxiety goes? so its just getting to that starting point so i cant back out hmmm
-
I am speaking from experience. It took me several minutes of just staring into the mirror with the clippers poised against my hairline before I just took a deep breath and started in. The wait and the weight were over right then.
-
sounds familiar.. ive had the clippers to my head a few times but just not had them move back!
-
Well, the only way you ever will know if you like it is to do it. The hair you have now can always grow back in.
All I can tell you is that I never looked back once I started. A lot of guys report that their only regret is having waited so long to do it.
-
My first razor shave was in the shower. A bit of anxiety once I realized that there was no turning back. The razor went right across the front and center. By the end of the first day and nobody said anything !!! Relief. Now get good comments all the time. Have not looked back for more hair. Love it bald.
-
thats cool.. evry few days i have to use a steriod cream on my head but with thick hair it gets caught up and looks greasy and awful... one thing ive said to talk myself out of shaving head is that if scalps bad under the hair id feel awful but my house mate cleared that up by saying 'with no hair there the cream can go direct on it if its bad' so guess that wont work now to talk myself out of it lol
-
thanks for advice! i couldnt do it so got clippers plugged in and asked room mate to do it for me no matter what i say... hes on his way now.. i decided on having it done with no guard!
-
photo or it didn't happen! It's a big change that you are going to like.
-
well.. he tried to resist but he ran the clippers down centre of head then there was no going back. such an awesome experiance! as soon as the hair started coming off i felt the worry and stress go too. i love the feel
-
Looking goooooood O0 O0 O:O
-
Now that wasn't that bad, was it Steve? Looks great!
-
you really think so?
-
I do....Next step when you're ready....the razor.

Congrats Mate ! Well Done ! Razor Next !
-
Looks incredible on you! Keep it for sure!
-
Looks good but it would look a whole lot better with a smile. :)
-
Congrats on taking the plunge! You look good - now smile!
-
You look good with and without hair. The best thing to do is see if this helps with your psorsis and decide from there whether you want to keep the look.
I know other are saying get the razor out but I think you should see whether there is an improvement to your psorsis before getting your head out. I would assume clippers might be kinda to it than a razor. Plus if it clears up and you like the look and fancy going fully sly, you can do it on a friday and it'd be back to a skindhead by Monday.
Having less hair on your head might allow the condition to clear or at least potions that might treat the condition to seep in better! If it does improve you'll have the chance to decide whether you want to go sly or grow it back.
Well done on finally doing it :)
-
Looks great! Yeah keep clipping, say once per week or every second week no longer and see how it goes. I suspect it will clear up if you do that. Also get a second opinion on that psoriasis now that they can see it well O0
-
Looking good! Good head shape as well. Congrats on going for it!
-
as soon as the hair started coming off i felt the worry and stress go too. i love the feel
Congratulations, sir!
The look suits you.
-
Looks good, so you don't need to look so worried.
-
thanks everyone.. still a bit of a shock and im not used to it although it feels great... the great news is my scalp has totally healed.. its like some kind of micarcle.. i dunno wether i should now risk growing it back!
-

It'll possibly come back if you leave it to grow back out. When I left mine longer than two weeks between clips, I would feel it coming back by the end of the third week. So for a while I clipped direct every two weeks with a wahl bald fader, then went sly which my scalp loves and yours might too by the sounds of it 😃
-
so you think i should keep it shaved from now on?
-

I wouldn't risk growing it back. We've had similar reports from other guys here over the years and the problem seems to return with the hair. If your skin seems to be in good condition at the moment, now would be a good time to take the blade to it. I wouldn't shave in the midst of a flare-up but it sounds like you've got the all-clear for now. The blade will help keep your scalp exfoliated.

its the best condition ive ever known it.
Is it natural to still after a day not be used to it.. despite the good feedback im still not letting it sink in this could be the new me
-
Irony and good fortune combined!
A guy at work was telling me that he has thought about shaving since he saw me do it, but he has outbreaks of psoriasis on his head that prevent it.
I am going to share this information with him.
Thank you!
(and giving yourself time to adjust is the reason for the thirty-day rule.)
-
glad it could be of use.. tell him how worried i was but how its best scalp has ever been and thats within just one day! its mad
-
YES, it will likely take a few days or weeks for YOU to get used to the new look. Part of the reason for the 30 day rule.
By 30 days, you'll be well on your way to enjoying the new look.
I find that even after more than a year, I'm still amazed that this bald head is me. I really like the look, but just so different from 59 years of hair. But I'm not going back to hair. I like this look too much. Continue to get good comments from those who meet me or work with me.
Bald looks good on you.

This is great news after so long of having deal with the flippin' psoriasis! :x!
It is perfectly natural to be going through different feelings about the change. I'd suggest not fighting those feelings, just accept they are there and be aware they are there. That awareness without fighting an inner battle against them will help
Also focus on the positives, a scalp that is happy! No more worrying about styling your hair, a fresh new look, a new chapter, the more you think of positives the more they will appear O0
-
Congrats, looks good. O0
and congratulations to your vanishing psoriasis. Is with me that way. Since I wear bald, the psoriasis on the head is as good as gone.
-
bud how id you go about going total slu with psorises? im worried bout doing it incase it reacts to shaving
-
I had my first head shaving on vacation and had a first shock. I had a lot of red spots on the head. After a few days in the sun they were gone. I then shaved every few weeks with the clippers but the red spots came back. That was frustrating. In a later holiday, I went to a Turkish barber he did the perfect job and made a blade shave. The red spots disappeared. That convinced me to shave my head regularly. Whenever the hair is too long, there are the red spots. I hope it is with you that way. I think you should try it. go for it. good luck O0
