Title: To go bald again, or not
Post by: Snoozer421 on June 26, 2007, 08:31:02 PM
Let me give you my story in a nutshell. After my relationship ended (3 years) I decided to do something new. Before hand I had fairly long hair, and wanted it shaved, to be...liberating I guess. So i did this back in january, and kept it short shaving every other week with a 1 guard. Back in march I had decided to try it sly, I liked it, but a lot of the girls in my age group (I'm 22) I wonder if they dont approve?

Now, I am considering it again, shaved my head down to a 1 after 2 months of not cutting. Love the short style again, forgot how liberating it felt. I am digging the confidence I have with shorter hair, and received several compliments from women at work, but now I wonder should I take it down all the way again, be a real sly guy.

Also, i wear glasses, would that totally kill the slyness? Or would that be add to it?

Also, one thing I didnt like, and I think turned me off, was that I couldnt get it the shiney bald like the guy from the shield...I have no receding hairline, so I thought perhaps that could have been the issue. Are there any techniques to give it that straight to the skin shine? Thats the true deal breaker here for me.

Thanks for all the advice!

-matt

glasses shouldnt kill any sly look..most of the time is enhances it....if you dont have male pattern baldness you will have the "blue" shadow wherever your hairline is....but you can still get quite a shine if you take the right steps...mainly shaving with a quality razor...going with and against the grain until straight slickness....then using a exfoliator to get rid of that very top layer of dead skin cells.....then a cold water rinse..then using headlube glossy moisturizer lotion.....thats prob the best way to a shine for you unless you happen to start going naturally bald....the bald by choice guys can prob help you more than me though.

welcome to SBG's..give it another shot ,we'll help you overcome any problems in the shaving department....you also know it will grow right back if you don't like it.

I appreciate the response...Going to go pick up a good razor tomorrow and I'm going to do it again. Any suggestions on a quality razor? And what sort of shaving gel/cream would a local supermarket (kroger, publix) carry that would be good for head? Last time I just used regular gillette.

if you used a disposable or cheap razor that was your problem....i'd recommend the fusion or mach 3...i have the fusion and it works great...but i have switched to the headblade and hooked on it......get a fusion or mach3 for now and if you decide to stay sly this time invest in a headblade sport.......go to CVS,walgreens or any of the pharmacy stores like that and see if they have the headblade products which they usually do...if they do pick up a bottle of "headslick" shaving cream..it is hands down the best shaving cream for head shaving....if you cant find any...use some king of shaves gel......also pick up some st. ives apricot scrub so you can exfoliate before and after you shave...it makes a ton of difference in quality of shave and shine.....also buy a handheld mirror so you can shave in the shower, it helps soften your hair so it shaves easier and makes shaving alil easier than standing at the sink, but some guys prefer to stand at sink...... take some before and after pics for us!

Welcome iotapi421!!!  Don't worry about the glasses.  I wear them and think they actually add to my overall goodlookedness (new word)  :*))  You might even consider a new stylin pair that will push the cool factor.

Welcome! Dude don't worry about glasses and having a bald head...it's a good look, so don't let that hold you back.

As far as shine, try all the suggestions that have been given here in past posts...I'm naturally shiny, so i really don't need to help it along...but I understand you wanting yours to glissen in the light (very cool)...

Sounds like you dig the look, it's in your head and what you appearantly want right now,,,shave it smooth, because that is the only way to get the shine going ( you mentioned going to a #1)..

Slick and smooth and ultimately SLY is the only way to go brutha!

Good luck and don't sweat it so much, post some pics soon.

Okay.

So I went out today and bought a mach 3, I bought head slick shaving cream, and bought some nivea after shave balm. I'm going to do it tonight or tomorrow night.

Here are some recent pics of me with my hair grown after a month or so.

Currently its cut very short, a precut.

Thank you all...

So far, my room mates (live with 3) thought I did a great job. They totally dig it. I didnt get carded tonight when I bought some beer. woot!

Their girlfriends were all over the noggin. 2 of the girls felt it was a must to keep touching, rubbing and kissing the dome.

What a great style. My mother and brother were supportive, I called them tonight to let 'em know. They'll see the slyness in a few days. All is great in sly land. I cant wait to go into work for people to see. I'm actually going in on saturday, half of the office folk will be there so I'm gonna make a guest appearance!

Thanks all again, <3 slyness.

I'm pretty much jamming out right now man, listening to pink floyd, wondering why I didnt do this earlier, or rather why i didnt keep the look. Granted I had a crap ass pair of glasses, got some new ones which looks nice imo, but I dont know. I havent felt this great in awhile. i'll swear in court if someone is thinking sly, they need to try it.

Feels really good to be Sly.  I like it ..well actually I love it.  Its not so much about making a statement that I am bald ( SLY)  it is just that I have the freedom to do what I want.  Yes I had the normal thoughts that every guy  has about shaving his dome...but I find it more accepting publicly than I thought it would be.  Back when I was in highschool ( which we wont talk about how long ago that was)  If you shaved your head bald you were known as a SKIN HEAD and that was related to trouble.  So we Sly guys have come a long way.

Timm, Glad to hear of your positive experience.  I agree that we've come a long way.  It's been awhile since high school for me to.  Alot has changed since then.  From my experience, as well as what I've read from others,  the fear factor was alway overblown.

no kidding.  I think alot of it is that people tend to read to much into things.   Seems as though the last few months I have in certain situations where I stop and think...would i be doing this if i was back in highschool and etc.  I went to the gym the other day.  I have always had a fear of gyms.  Fears of others pointing or laughing cause maybe i couldnt lift as much as they could and my biggest fear...i could never do chin ups even in highschool..and i got laughed at in gym class about it.  It was the only area i failed in and have carried that with me for over 25 years.  So I go to the gym and im lookin around and i say the hell with it...why have i let this bother me...same as going bald.  Im just disappointed I didnt do this last year.  Oh well first time for everything..

Ya, I've had some of the same experiences.  I only wish sometimes that I had the 18 year old body, but with the 40-something mind.  That would be an awsome combination.

You aint kiddin.....wonder if they have come up with that wonder drug yet?  It is amazing how we change our thoughts and views.  What we thought was important 20 years ago....dont amount to a hill of beans.  I think that is why I push my kids to do things ...cause I see them doing things that I would have never dreamed of doing when I was their age.  Speakin of I just got a phone call , my son has just made the ALL STARS team in baseball here.  Meaning we will be on the travel team.  Hey catch you all later

Congrats to your son.

It's still raining here in the Midwest.  All of our state tournament (little league) games were cancelled yesterday and now they're cancelled for most of the day today.

Hey man.  First of all, your before/after pics are proof positive that sly is the superior look for you.  You went from a very boyish  (kinda spoiled looking is my reading)  image to one that is more grown up, slightly harder.  The glasses are fine.  I had been having the same questions as you about them, but the guys here have helped me get past that.  Your currently glasses go well with the look.  Am I right in tht they have a somewhat "retro" look  (sortof "Malcom X" ? )...   Anyway, you might go for  a certain retro image with the glasses; adding a fedora hat would be quite cool, I think.  (not for all the time, maybe when you go to clubs, etc).  Also, have you considered contact lenses?  They are not that expensive anymore, and they are supposed to be extremely comfortable nowadays.  I wore them about 15 years ago; they were ok, but I found then uncomfortable after a while, esp during/ after reading (and my profession--academic--requires a lot of that.  haven't gotten around to checking out the current state of the art lenses.  Anyway, think about it .... and PS ... thanks for your response in my "to be or not to be" post.
