Title: styling a goatee
Post by: mancho on June 21, 2007, 03:25:13 PM
I suspect a lot of you guys have some form of goatee, so maybe you'll have some advice. I'm experimenting with growing out my goatee about an inch or two (if I had a camera I'd post a pic) . I'd prefer not to use anything and at this length I could pretty much get away with it, but sometimes it's a bit unwieldy. What would you suggest to lightly hold it in place? Wax? Gel? Other?

Welcome mancho!

I dunno... I wouldn't like anything on my goat like spray or gel or anything.

I just use my clippers with attachment to keep it just short enough that it doesn't really need combing cuz it'll go every way but where I want it if I don't!   :o

If you're using some lotion on your dome, run a bit through your beard and comb it or using your hand to style it.

The only thing I use is just for men color.. Yea it's all white and don't look good. so I apply once every 2,3 weeks..

I have to agree with the Sgt.

I have had a goatee for some time now,(much more gray than black now) and have never used anything to keep it "styled".

Usually trim it down myself or when I go to barber I have them do it after my buzzdown.
If you have a regular pocket comb, you can just comb it down after you shower and shave.

Keep us posted, and post a pic of goat when you grow it out.
Good luck,

NY

In addition to this forum, am I also a frequent user of another forum that focuses on facial hair:  http://p075.ezboard.com/bjefffsbeardboard

A great place to learn about trimming/styling/etc.

As for using product, I'm not a fan of having any product on my beard.  I never grow mine past an inch or so and just trim the stashe area at the bottom.  As of now I am clean shaven, but I do have a beard or goatee fairly often.

There are companies that make mustashe wax, but in my opinion this is only helpful if you grow a huge mustache that would normally cover your mouth and such.  Even if you grew a two inch goatee and kept the lip line trimmed I don't think you would need any products like that.

How often do you guys trim your goatees, and do you do it yourselves or have someone else do it for you?  I get mine trimmed once a week.  If I let it go any longer than that, it starts to get a bit scraggly and itchy.   The rechargeable battery on my beard trimmer died a while back and I haven't replaced it because there is a barber around the corner from my office who trims it for $5.  I'm always afraid of messing it up if I do it myself.

i trim the goat myself about once or twice a week while using scissors.

I usually just leave it alone, but if I start seeing a bunch of hairs out of place then it becomes time to trim.

David...

Glad to hear from ya again...

I must say...I'm also glad you got rid of the Three Muskateer handle bar thingy...

Razor,

Lately I've been letting the barber do it when I get buzzed. But if it get too scraggly or some hairs start to grow in oddly(as gray hairs do) I will buzz it down myself in between.
If you have one of those adjustable trimmers with the guard, you can control how low you want to go and it's pretty hard to mess up.

The hard part is trying to keep the edges straight.

True, but I usually do that when I shave my face. Once you get the straight line coming in you really just follow it as a sort of guide.
My biggest problem seems to be keeping under the chin straight.

I've always trimmed my facial hair myself (going on 35 years).  Get a good groomer that has several settings, start long and work your way to the setting you like best.  Depends on how fast your hair grows and how thick it is.  I trim mine to a #2 once a week and shave around the edges everyday.

hair not dark enough there. and i would never hear the end of it from BALDROB. soulpatches look cool, but it just probably wouldn't work for me.

Leave it alone.  It looks great the way it is.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it.   8)

You could lose the 'stache and just keep the lower goat, or keep the goat just down the center of the chin and let it grow out some, like mine.  I finally got fed up with a full goatee about a year ago and switched to the chin covering, then just down the middle.

Didn't I tell you to leave it alone??  :Xo!  Not to worry; it will be back to normal within a week.

I like Medic's idea.  A couple of my buddies have that look and pull it off well.

Kids are the most honest.  A few years ago, I shaved the facial hair clean.  A little girl that my wife babysat, about 4 years old, said I looked weird.  I thought so also, and never shaved clean again.

If it's any consolation, I once thought about doing the same thing about a year ago, but decided against it because I knew I'd just mess it up.  Probably would not have known where to stop shaving until the whole thing was destroyed.   I don't actually have a "real" soul patch.   The whole area fills in right up to my lower lip, but the hair in the center is a little darker.  It looks untidy and it all that hair around the mouth is also uncomfortable,  so I had the barber "carve out" a soul patch that I have to shave around every day.  It's not something I want to experiment with too much because getting it back to normal would be a bit of an ordeal.

How about you shave the left half of your moustache off and the right half of your gotee! That would be different Paul. :*))

You could do what I've done a few times.

Keep the overall goat like in yer pic....but from yer lower lip (or under the lower-lip tuft), shave a razor-width strip straight down yer chin and neck.

it's the chuck liddell look.....kinda makes an extended 'stache, man

Here's mine Just before I went SLY

I've started my goatee today (as a goatee on a sly guy is like salt and pepper on a good steak) and am looking at the avatars of the rest to deside which style I like.

I really like the style Tyler has (along with the mustache), but I don't think it would fit my face.

My only problem is I know it will be gray. Is there any good beard color products out there? I once tried Just For Men U_Color, but it didn't do squat.

Jim:   I have the same problem...but have had great success with the Just For Men for Beards...designed for the coarser facial hair.  Does a great job and you use so little on a goatee that it last quite a while.

Robmeister:  Man I forgot about Liddell...like that...may try it myself.!!!

Thanks Paul, I'll give it a try. Right now though my chin is like sandpaper (we all gotta start from somewhere), but once it starts growing, I'll give it  shot.  :)

You could always try the "chin strap" look.  I tried to attach a pic so you can see what I'm talking about.  It's not a real good view of what I mean but I guess you can see enough.  I couldn't find any other photos right off hand.  It's one of those styles that have no in between.  You either rock it or you don't.  I use to back in the day when I first started going sly because that's how I use to shape my beard up when I use to trim my hair with clippers.  I started noticing that I didn't like the transition where the sideburns stop and the slick dome starts.  Then I tried the goatee and liked it better just because there was less work shaping it up.  Actually I've been going totally clean for the past few weeks now.  I've never really liked the clean look on myself but after I shaved it off it just felt so...well, clean.  Plus it makes my face feel so much cooler which is good for me.
