Title: Good Starting Slant?
Post by: smoothsailing on April 12, 2013, 06:03:05 PM
I hear they tend to be more aggressive.  I want to get a razor that requires fewer passes for my head so this seems ideal.  Anyone have advice on a good starting slant razor?

I haven't tried a slant yet but hear they are awesome!

I have a 37C slant and a bakelite slant.

I don't find the slant to be aggressive, but I find it to be very efficient.

The 37C (Merkur) is a great razor for anyone looking to try out a slant.  They're well priced and well made.

There's also a 39C (longer handled model, I think)  which I've never tried, but I think our own Warhawk has one, as well as a 37 or 39G (which is the gold coloured model of the 37/39C).

The Bakelite one has for some reason become very desirable, with prices climbing as a result, but I much prefer my 37C.

Hi SS:  Jeramy... I have the Merkur 37C and 37G (the gold version of the 37C).  I don't have the 39C which is the longer handle.  I prefer the regular handles better because I can control it better on my head shaves.

The slant razors are not aggressive but very efficient like Bluebriz (Brian) has mentioned.  I thought they were too until I actually tried one out.  You should pull the trigger and get a 37C.  It gives me great shaves every single time.  Keep us posted.

I have the 37G and it's an amazing shaver. I like the fact that it doesn't tug, no matter how many days it's been since I shaved.
Next, I want the 37C, the Bakelite, and a non-slant, the Progress adjustable.

That stainless Feather is a nice razor.

Wow, what a gift!

Is that the AS-D1 or D2?  We'd love to see some pics!

@Smoothsailing:  Hey Jeremy... kindly show us pics of your new DE razor.  I see the box.  Either or if you have the Feather AS-D1 or AS-D2, you my friend have a great DE razor.  How are you liking it?  I am looking forward to pics and reading your review of your new stainless steel beauty.  Thumbs up to your grandma for giving you an incredible gift.

Let me know which one it is guys.  I thought the only difference was the version with the stand and without (this one is the one without the stand).  It seems they actually re released it as a newer model.  If I had bought it, I would know ;D

@Jeremy:  Congrats on a fine razor.  To me it looks like you got the updated Feather AS-D2 razor. . . wow that is a beauty.  You should pair it with a Feather blade.  How do you like it?  How does it perform?  What blade are you using?

Using some feather blades in it.  Performs pretty good!  The angle is definitely.... different.  It's better to hold it at a sharper angle than many other razors.  Also the head is wider than my other two German razors.  I know because those razors always leave a bit of the blade exposed on the side and the feather perfectly covers both sides of the razor blade.

Hefty razor with very good balance.  My only complaint is that it's kind of difficult to load the blade in because there isn't very good center support.  Every once and a while my blade gets crooked if I don't seat it in snugly which never happens on my German razors.

Feather makes beautiful razors!  I wish I could afford an AS-D2 (I'd even slum it with an AS-D1😉).
For some reason it's not even sold in Japan, and they can't tell me when it will be!

Hahah wow that's pretty confusing.  I guess wet shaving isn't as popular there?

Some people must be, because I can still buy DE and injector blades at lots of places, but in over 6 years here, I've only met one person who wet shaved, with an injector razor.  Most people I meet use electric shavers, and most of my students (18-21) only shave once a week or less with electrics.

Congrats on the Feather!  I never used one, but have always relied on my two Merkurs.  I really like its profile and hope it brings you many happy shaves.
