Title: New here and TERRIFIED!!
Post by: Hyperocker on March 31, 2013, 06:19:52 PM
Ok, so this subject probably happens on a daily basis and for that I apologise..........

So, I've got quite significant hairloss and things have progressed at a steady rate for about 4-5 years during which I've been using concealers and wearing caps, the usual techniques I suppose! So, having endured this for a number of years I can see the appeal of at least a buzz cut or full shave! No concealing, no worry, no hassle!

Ok, so, I'm booked to have this done on Saturday but I don't feel ready and I'm infact terrified! I think it'll smash my confidence, I'll be treated differently and I'll be a completely different guy! However, I've currently been away from work for a few weeks, and on Sunday I'm due to fly off literally around the world!! With work! Sweet I know! So this seems to be the perfect time to get it done! Get confident with it, get a tan on it all with people who I will have mostly just met! Return home in a few weeks with a new look that I'm hopefully comfortable and confident with!

Good plan?

Seems so....... So why the hell am I struggling so much with this?!?! I know as I get nearer to Saturday I'll be an absolute wreck!! Any words of wisdom, advice or help would be greatly appreciated! :-)

I know there are more important things going on everyday and really I'm very lucky but I'm sure you can all relate to the fact this is tough!

Anyway, hope to talk soon,

Welcome aboard Hyperocker. All first times are always nerve wracking but with a lot of thrill. Dont stress about it too much. You have a good plan.

I was terrified at the beginning also. It is just an idea that you have to become comfortable with. It may take some time but once you have decided to go through with it you will become comfortable with it.

Take a deep breath and then go for it.  You will be amazed at the surge in confidence and the timing, being away for a few weeks, will allow you to get used to the new you and return to dazzle all your workmates and friends.

Welcome to the club.
Anything that's new and different can always be terrifying. But, like skybear said, it's just a haircut. If you you don't like it your hair will grow back. I'm willing to bet, though, you'll be fine and come to appreciate the new look. So will your family and friends. It's just a matter of adjusting to it.

Welcome! Are you going to do it yourself, or is a barber/someone else going to do this for you?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome, and support! I'm hoping it goes as smoothly as you say, and my confidence stays relatively intact! I suppose what I'm really thinking about is people's reaction when I'm 'buzzed' and it's pretty clear I'm suddenly a lot balder than it has always appeared! I've let my hairline receed naturally it's just my crown has been covered by the concealer!! I've got my excuses but they're all pretty lame! Any thoughts on what I can say to the obvious impending questions?!?!?

Thanks guys, :-)

Hi, HyperRocker!

Welcome to this forum, mate. You will find a lot of support & encouragement here.

When I first had my first full-on head shave I was very nervous, but the barber put me at ease by saying to me that If I didn't like it, it would only be a few weeks until I was back at my regular #2 buzz cut length. I must admit, despite being nervous at first, a kind of strange feeling of confidence began to rise within me as I realised I was taking control and making the decision to become a bald guy. I did have a little thinning going on but nothing major and so the choice to be a bald guy was entirely mines to make. It was a good choice.Enjoy the "trip" to becoming a cool bald guy.A bit of advice for you: instead of going for a buzz cut, just ask the barber to shave your head. You will be nervous, but you will become more confident also. weird how that happens, but it does. You will look back in weeks & months to come and wonder what all the worry & fear was about. All the best.

"I got a haircut."

Why do you feel anyone is owed an explantation about your choice of haircut?

I was not balding. I just shaved my head. Pretty much, nobody said anything. Now i had been buzzing shorter and shorter over the period of a year or so.

But when i went from an inch to half an inch, no one said anything. Then i just took it shorter and shorter each month until i was bald as you see today.  I like the bald best! If i were to do it again, i'd go straight to bald.

I've dealt with this question for weeks. I usually say that I got a haircut. Honestly I kind of enjoy the attention. My friends that have adjusted greet me with "Hey, baldy!" to which I reply "What's up, hairy!"

Thanks for the comments everyone,

I suppose no needs an explanation for my haircut, it's just the worry of how to react to people's reaction to the fact on friday I had a full crown (concealed) then on saturday a very empty crown!

I love the 'what's up hairy' comment! :-)

Four days to go!!

:-)

it's just the worry of how to react to people's reaction to the fact on friday I had a full crown (concealed) then on saturday a very empty crown!

I've related this before. A woman I know saw me the day before I shaved my head. At that point I had hair down to my shoulder blades. When she saw me the next day I had a shaved head. She said I looked different and asked if I had lost weight. The thing about this that always makes me grin is that she is a hairdresser.
Based on that experience I would guess that most people who know you won't even notice the empty crown.

Thanks for the reassurance Buddha,  I suppose it's really only huge in my own head and people will get over it pretty quickly and hopefully I'll be fine with it once I've finished this trip in a few weeks! :-)

Hey, I found something that will show what I might look like come Saturday but I can't seem to load the picture! Any idea what I'm doing wrong? :-)

Go for it- I am totally BBC for almost one year- went from full head of hair with gel products etc to totally shaved. Daily shaver here to keep the look but well worth it- some will like it others have to just deal. It is your choice. Good luck and post a pic.

Make an appointment so that you won't wuss out. That's what I did.

Yeap, appointment is made, it's for the last thing Saturday, that way if I freak out I can shoot home then I'm off all over the far east for 4 weeks so I can calm down! Wussing out is a real possibility so I hope an appointment helps! Fortunately my hairdresser is a close friend and he's been trying to talk me into this for literally years!

If you friend is a hairdresser and thinks the sly look will suit you, trust him and go with it.  Unless you are Samson, you won't lose strength or anything like that when your hair is shaved off!

Today is the day!!!! And I'm sweating it!! Calm me down please!!!!

You'll be just fine. The hardest part ends with the first pass of the razor or clippers.  You're 100% committed. Then put on a smile and show off your new head.

You're bringing back memories of my first head shave. The results were just fine. And now I wonder what I worried about so much. I did not get negative feedback.

Hello Hyperocker and welcome aboard.
I was just reading your first post and if you have already got sugnificant hairloss then going sly would be the way to go in my opinion.
I too was getting to the point of quite a bit of hairloss on top and figured going sly would look better than having "partial" hair. Lets face it, comb overs aren't cool.
At first I think all the doubts of going sly were just from me. Everyone else seemed to like it and now I couldn't be happier.
Don't beat yourself up over it.

Cheers everyone!! I don't know why this is so worrying!! All the advice is great but I'm still not sure if I'll get to that chair!! :-(

I suppose it's now or back to a life of concealing/hiding/caps/and combovers which as tmgrood said.....

Aren't cool

I'm infact terrified!

Sometimes, it's hard to tell the difference between terror and excitement. On this occasion, you may be excited.

Good luck. You will enjoy the new experience.  :)

Like I said rocker, don't beat yourself up over it. Sometimes we can be our own worst critics.
Chances are those close to you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. :)

Yeah, you're so right! Everyone round me is very supportive, and encouraging! They can't seemed to understand why it's such a big thing!! It's just a haircut!!

I like the idea of being excited rather than feeling terror! I must say I can't wait for the hassle free lifestyle!!

Is it as good as you all say?!

Wish me luck!

Good luck go well and enjoy the excitement and adrenaline rush!!. And yes it is as good as everyone says, I know that first hand because I have only just started shaving myself and everything including an increase in self confidence is true.

What I say to people if they ask is the straight truth, I began shaving my head because my hair was thinning, no more stories, no more hiding.
Say it straight, the truth of the truth, don't hide anymore, that is the key to feeling great :)

Soooooooo.........

Thats was top five hardest things ever!! I'm afraid though I'm not sly........yet!

A buzzed top and sides seems to even things out ok. Not sure how I feel about it yet, it's different! Just worried about reactions now I suppose!  Hopefully I can get a tan on it over the next four weeks and get confident with it!

Thanks for the post crowbar, really got me in that chair earlier, and thanks for everyones support! Any tips on how to get confident quick would be appreciated!!

Cheers guys!

Just enjoy the attention you'll get. soon you may find you want that awesome smooth feel. I dont like a heavy shadow I feel exposed and weird. Shaving makes my shadow less noticable (to me anyway)

If you went through with it.... I hope it went well! I have just posted my first contribution to the site. Similar situation but havent had the guts to get it done yet. Like you I am concerned about perception and the idea of people talking about me, especially at work. I work in an office with around 50+ people and really dont like the idea of being the object of gossip. But the way I see it is that they will probably get over it.

Similarly, things like Facebook are helpful in that even if you don't post a "direct" photo of your new haircut (i.e. "look at me"), posting one with a friend / girlfriend / wife etc will allow people to see straight away instead of having to go through the same generic conversation with each person you see!

Did you go for a straigh up "0" cut? I got a "1" done about a year ago and looked ok for the first couple days. Just worried the 0 may be too severe for me!

Hey all, so it's been a couple of day and reactions have been good and ok! I'm on my trip now so its new faces all the time which is good as I'm still getting used to it, it's grown on me a little I have to say and it dies look better the shorter it goes! Hopefully this will continue until I go shorter and shorter then sly!

I feel for you MB85, it's such a tough thing to do, I'm lucky as I'm away for a month so can get used to things! Believe me though it's not as bad as I built it up to be! And it's great not worrying about gelling, concealing, prepping hair all the time!

Glad all is going well and it must be so refreshing not having to worry anymore about all of that and the psychological stress that goes along with it. Free at last and a burden lifted and thrown away, ahhhh yes!! :)

Next step if you like the buzz cut will be to get your own clippers of course. You will love the feeling of clipping it yourself, it's so liberating and satisfying.

I ended up with Wahl baldfader clippers which have nice fine teeth that help greatly to pick up all the hairs and they cut far more effectively and cleanly than standard clippers. You can also attach a No1 or 2 comb to them if needed.
I chucked all my gels waxes shampoos and stuff out on the same day I did my first clip. What a day and to add to it the realisation of no more haircut appointments needed, self made man!

I agree with crowbar. Buzz your own head. But I'd also encourage you to take the razor out and just shave bit bald. It feels better than a buzz. Reality.  The smooth bald has kept me head shaving for over a year.
