Title: getting a close shave
Post by: gregmi77 on March 30, 2013, 12:36:18 PM
I shaved my head a couple days ago and I am liking the look , though I having a hard time getting it super smooth . I have almost a velcro thing going on on my head. I shaving against the grain and then going horizontal to get it even close , but did not work . I get the velcro bald . And i have to have someone get more of back. How do you guys get the closet shave and that smooth bald head?

Personally, I start by using a razor with a multi-blade cartridge (Schick Hydro 5). For the shave itself, I go with the grain first, rinse, and the shave again going against the grain. Then, before rinsing again, I'll go back and pick up any spots that I missed. That keeps me smooth for about 2 days before I reach Velcro status.

Hi Gregmi77, it might be your pre shave routine that's causing the problem. Before you shave make sure you've really softened up the stubble. I have a hot shower beforehand and that does the trick for me. I make sure I have shaving cream on my head within 5 minutes and it makes the shave much easier I think. Of course you'll find your own method over time. Hope this helps!

Make sure you are using good products.

I ditched canned shaving products a while back and ill NEVER use that garbage again. Check out the SOTD thread for a lot of recommended products.

I can recommend RazoRock shave soaps and my favorite, Cella. You can check out these products at Italianbarber.com

They are in Canada but have great prices and premium customer service.

Shave with the grain first and then make a second pass against the grain.

Welcome to the group! It takes a little time to get the hang of it. I have found that doing it in the shower is best. Hot water will help too. I used Gillette  Fusion when I started then got into Headblade once I got the hang of it. Take your time. Good luck

thanks for the information . I took a hot shower and then went to shaving , though I think I dried my hair after the shower. I was using the clear shaving cream for head shave and using a marc 3 razor sensitive . I going to try either tonight or tommarrow to shave it again and see how close I can get the second time around . I usually have thick hair and maybe that has something to do with it when I get that far down.

Get a badger shave brush and a good shave soap (currently I'm using Col Conk).
It takes a little longer but recently I've started using a 3 pass technique for head shaving. Start with the grain then against the grain then across the grain. I use the Headblade ATX with the HB4 (4 blade cart).

a muhle r106  DE razor

I tried cartridge shaving and it just requires too much pressure on the razor to achieve even close to a good shave which really irritates my skin.

I shave every day with my DE.  1 pass against the grain = smooth.  Touch up required after but as I'm getting better at using it there is less and less to clean up afterwards.  If I skip a day I try a pass across the grain than against the grain.  Use plenty of hot water and frequently rinse any razor you are using so it doesn't clog.  I use Shave Secret as a preshave oil and it really helps me achieve a closer shave when used with a good quality soap or cream.
