Title: What's your hat of choice?
Post by: Tyler on October 17, 2006, 11:42:12 AM
Hats are a good thing to have lying around for a bald guy.  When it's summer hats are good to block the sun and when it's winter they are good to keep the ol' bald head warm.  What's your hat of choice for each season?

I have to be honest, I love showing off my bald head and try to avoid wearing hats.  But when the time is right I'm usually throwing on a baseball cap.  I like caps with the "flex fit" elastic band for sizing.  I've found that this type of fitting hat is more comfortable to wear.  If I'm heading to the snow or to Montana for my annual hunting trip, then I'll usually have a skull cap or beanie (short stocking cap) in my back pocket.  Or, if it's a warmer day for skiing I will usually wrap a bandana over my head in the form of a do rag.  I like using the Under Armour Skull Cap (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FSFENA?ie=UTF8&tag=bestmyspacepr-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000FSFENA)<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=bestmyspacepr-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B000FSFENA" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> for warmer days also.  These are made of lighter material that wicks the sweat away and keeps your head cool.

If it didn't say "UnderArmor" all over it, I would get one in a heart beat.  I love my underarmor T's to wear under my riding gear.

I had a beanie I got from http://www.ems.com/ that I loved, but I lost it.  And can't find it on their site.  Most beanies like to grab my velcro at the end of the day, and are unconfortable to wear for me.  Mostly I just slap on a ball cap if I need a hat, or I have a couple of old fedora's I like.

I usually don't wear hats. It's funny, my mother would come back from trips and bring home a hat for me.
I must have at least a dozen by now lying arround somewhere. It's the same thing with sunglasses and wallets.
She would buy me those and I wouldn't wear them - real Greeks don't wear wallets anyway.
They carry their money loosely in their pockets. Plus, the change produces a nice jingle...

And if you ever lose money that way (because you were stupid enough not to keep it in a wallet), you just
take it as a man and brush it off with a "ah, never mind..". That's how us Greeks handle it.

Anyway, where was I? Ah, yes, hats. Well, I usually don't wear hats, but being bald now,
and having already experienced a winter with my bald pate, I started wearing wooly hats when it's cold outside, like this one here:
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alasiesta.com%2Fbilder%2Fwollmuetze-6320-braun-bei-150.jpg&hash=ed797052b474ddc5f5415246e9e95fe0cd8bebec)

And earlier today I took a risk by ordering this hat (flatcap)...

I'm going to check it out and then decide if I'm going to be wearing it on a more regular basis.

What do you think?

Believe it or not, the Survivor buffs are great for summer!

They don't look the coolest but you can actually get non-survivor buffs on the internet and at certain sport stores. They work awsome for water sports and biking. Also when it gets windy, it won't blow off.

They also are great to wear under winter hats to keep you head from itching against wool or other fabrics. I use them under my ski hat.

Of course nothing beats a classic derby:

That's my hat of choice for going out and meeting lay-days on a chilly night.

I looked at those "buff's" at REI a couple weeks ago, interesting, but didn't feel they were worth what they were asking.

Noner, that is a cool hat, looks more like a fedora then a derby though.  Cool car too.

It's gotta be really, really cold for me to put a hat on...  Us Chicagoans tough out the cold!!   ;D

I do wear a floppy hat in the summer when going on a long drive in the Jeep with the top down though!  Other than that, it's just some SPF30 sunscreen...

I live in Cleveland, and it gets ridiculously cold by the lake. In the winter, I normally go without a hat, but on the bad days, I've got a few beanies I wear. I have a few ballcaps, too. Mostly, I go with the bald head, though.

lostnfound21 and BaldRob - I've been to both Chicago and Cleveland when it was bad...you guys can have that nasty cold...and it's nasty!

Thanks everybody! 8)

Since everyone was commenting about my hat, I found it believe it or not, in Macy's. I was walking through and they had this little rack of hats and that one was the diamond in the rough.

Yes it is a derby because the lid is small and less oval.  A fedora has a very wide brim all the way around and a higher top usually twisted in more.

But if you want a really great hat you have to get one of these!

I normally never wear hats, but I must admit I have a huge collection of skull caps (various tyoes from knitted, Independent, Undergear's Wool skull cat rocks, WCC, etc. I am actually trying to find a great looking vintage "caddy hat" so if you don't like that new hat (flatcap) brother Harry... Lemme know, I want it! hehe   ;)

My headwear of choice is a Darth Vader helmet, but people keep telling me I look silly in it. Personally, I don't think any of them know a thing about taking fashion risks.

It depends on what I'm doing. I have a mess of ball caps all over the house. Whenever I'm not at work, I'll usually be wearing one of those. If the wife and I are going out, I'll wear one of my black felt cowboy hats. I've got one that's been through a lotta hell, got married in that one too. Then I've got one that my dad gave me. It's a $475 hat, I don't wear it very often though.

When I was still riding bulls I had one straw hat I wore to ride in. Needless to say, it's pretty beat up.

I don't have any skull caps yet. I have an old Harley stocking cap I used to wear when I was a professional shade tree mechanic. It can get pretty damn cold in the desert sometimes.

Any one of my UT hats.   Favorite would be my national champs hat.

Also, my NL champion houston astros hat is also one I like.      I still have all my youth baseball team hats(using the real MLB logos/colors)

On a side note, I have a hat with tiger woods autograph on it.    And this was an autograph I got myself, not one i'd consider buying in a collectible store.

When I went to the mall this weekend, I stopped by the Lids store and they were having a "But one get second half off sale", so I picked up a couple of Kangol 504's.

I like 'em.....  Keeps the bean nice and warm.

True, but it has a whole bunch of golfers autographs on it.   It was when the tour championship came to houston.

I'm just saying this was an autograph I actually physically got, not one that I bought at a memorabilia shop.

My favorite hat is the "Stroker", also known as a Greek Fisherman's Hat, and People's Cap. The Stroker has it's roots with Motorcycle Riders. Stroker refers to a Biker's tendency to push the hat back and smooth it against the head. People's Cap refers to the Working Class Heroes of our time like John Lennon, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Pete Seger. This hat, I believe, has been worn by more people on this planet than any other style, including the Baseball Cap!

I used to wear a Notre Dame (for obvious reasons) baseball cap but lost it and haven't found one yet which fits ... I guess I have a small odd shaped head.
When it's cold I'll pull on my balaclava although it causes problems when I need to go to the bank.

Then there's my skip caps, warm and comfortable, mmmm.

Prior to going SLY on New Year's Day, I would usually be seen in a golf/baseball style hat or a Floppy Bucket style hat. Now that I am free of the burden known as hair, I like the feeling of going hatless (with a little SPF 30). Though, I plan on continuing to wear the bucket hats on really sunny days out on the golf course.

I wear a green tweed flat cap from Studio Donegal (picked it up on my last trip to Ireland), which I LOVE! And I keep a black Buff on me at most times. It's really a very versitile little thing to have around.

And for dressy occasions, I have a really nice natty black bowler hat that always makes a splash.

Depends on the purpose and what else I am wearing... But my old Stand-By/Reliable has to be a Bennie with a little Crest on the side that reads: Free Moving, with a Snowflake underneath.  Its nice, warm, and I got it a few YEARS back from my sister and have held on to it since because no hat has fit me so well and is so comfortable... I am not to much the fan of Baseball Caps.  I think that they just make me look like a Hospital patient.  It worked before when I had hair... But I guess the style changes with the hair/lifestyle.

My favorite hats are my beat up straw cowboy hat bent into just the right shape and an Irish plaid cap.

I wear a beanie if my head gets cold, and I put on a suit and fedora if i feel like making people wonder (there is nothing more fun than walking around in downtown Charleston dressed like that).

I have one of those Black Gold, Paulie. I'm afraid to wear the damn thing anywhere, it's so damn nice. Then I have my everyday black felt that is a Stetson of some sort. My old straw bull riding hat is the best one though, just can't get it to fit my noggin anymore.

B.Rob's wrath notwithstanding....I'm with cs1solo and the cap.   You can spin'm around sideways or backwards to look like a beret.

Got me a nice one by Ralph Lauren/Polo.  Keeps the noggin very warm when needed.

For me its mostly beanies in the winter or fitted baseball caps but lately I have been digging on military style hats.  I even create a headblade version with one of the headblade patches:

I normally don't wear a hat, but if I do I wear a camo bucket hat.  The only reason I wear a hat is to keep the noggin from getting burnt.

I use to be all about baseball caps waaaaaay back in the day before I started buzzing my head with clippers.  Then I got into skull caps.  I love to rock a skully.  But my body tends to get heated very quickly and I'm a big sweater.  So I can only rock 'em in the winter.

usually, a baseball cap. but for full sun protection, you can't beat a good western straw hat. atwood 7x hereford low crown. although the fit isn't as good with shaved sides and back! anyone else experience this?

My hats have always fit funny.........think it's cause my head ain't right

I hate wearing hats. And the pressure sometimes gives me a headache. I prefer to show off my sly side. But with the weather extremes here in Ohio, got to wear one sometimes. I prefer a ball cap, but I have a flatcap when I need to dress up in the winter.

I saw some posts that said the hats gave the wearer a headache.  Thats almost always a sign the hat is too tight or was not fitted or blocked properly.  Coming from the military and law enforcement I simply cannot stress the importance of wearing head protection  that shades your ears, nose, cheeksn and back of neck from the constant sun.

Some of us are at odds with our dept chief for not allowing us to wear a western hat with our uniforms.  we currently have the traditional police service(saucer) cap and it has small bill and does not shade the ears, nose and neck.  I tell you, "Suck" is too kind of a word to describe it when the heat goes to 110 and you are working a major traffic accident on the Interstate without a decent hat.  Anyway, the boss doesnt want us to look like TX state patrol or sheriff deputies who wear western hats...  I don.t know why buts disappointing to say the least

Anyway, point was is there is nothing like a hat that fits properly. I use to sell and shape hats and there is a degree of skill involved in the process.

I've already answered this, so kind of a hi-jack, but I've been looking into the traditional middle eastern garment called the shemagh or keffiyah.  It's a 4' square of what looks to be shirt-like material that is wound around the head or worn draped over the head and shoulders, held in place with a headband or agal (think Lawrence of Arabia).  The US military has been using them as standard issue (apparently) for the guys stationed in the ME.  Seems like a nice portable and packable alternative for hot weather.  Could double as a light scarf in cooler weather.

I'll probably just buy some fabric and make one (really no sewing required) so as not to offend anyone, but something to look into.  Later!

I wear a baseball cap style.
Mine have my business logo embroidered on the front along with my cotton long sleeved shirts.

I wear them almost anywhere along with my truck that is logoized as well, to create local "branding" for my business.

Works great!
