Hey, I'm 18 and my hairline has been receeding for the last 10 months or so and my hair has become thinner. It's in my genes, I suppose, my mother's father was completely bald by the age of 21.
I've gone thorugh the normal stages, anger, depression etcetc. First I naturally did some research about propecia, rogaine and the like, but came to the conclusion that the side effects are not worth it. It's just hair after all. Now I have accepted my hairloss. Yesterday I spontaneously bought some clippers and buzzed my hair off, what do you think?
I'm not going to shave it slick with a razor yet, as I still have quite a lot of hair left. I just wanted to see what my head looks like and try it out. I'll probably keep it buzzed, as I have to go to the army (conscription) in 3 months. Who knows how much hair I will have left after a year.
PS. Thanks for the great posts on the forums.

You look good with short hair mate. Whatever hairstyle you go with in the future it's good that you've ruled out chemical treatments.
-
Welcome! The short buzz looks good; good luck with the army.
-
Thanks for the kind comments! I must say I feel great with the buzz, it's just fresh and easy and I don't worry about hiding my thinning hair anymore :). I might take it down to 3mm next week.
Also, you both look great, which gives me hope for when I one day shave it all off!
-
The buzz cut looks real good on you.... from your pictures I cant even notice any hair loss but clearly you are prepared and seem to be taking it very well... best of luck mate
-
Like Sahil15 said, I couldnt really see any hairloss, fine hair yeah.
Either look looks good on you!
-
Welcome mate.
Either look suits IMO!
-
G'Day Tom mate O0
Welcome to Sly Bald Guys!!
Buzz cut look good on you.
Good luck in the Army too!
-
you look great with a buzz haircut. At your age I also buzzed my hair short by desire - not thinning. Kept it that way until shaving.
-
Thanks guys! As far as my hair loss is concerned you don't see it really well in the pictures because of the way my hair is combed, but maybe it is worse in my head. Nonetheless I am glad I buzzed it. Now I know my head is a normal shape and that I can pull it off.
You're all very welcoming and kind, I appreciate that.

Welcome to the forum. I also had a receding hairline when I was young. I finally just came to grips with the fact that eventually most of my hair was going to fall out, decided to beat mother nature to the punch and broke out the clippers.
I went ahead and started sporting the sly look on a regular basis around the age of 27. I've let my hair start to grow out where it will on several occasions but I've always ended up taking it all back off. It just feels right. Not only do I think it makes me look better now, it's very low maintenance. That's a huge plus too! ;D
I see that you've made the decision to go ahead and take it down a little more. Good for you man. Wear it like that with pride because it looks good.
Also, thanks for signing up for the Armed Services. I'm a USN Vet myself. Take care of yourself and God Bless Tom.

The temple recession looks normal for guy your age ... regardless ... welcome to the hairless freedom !
Keep us posted !

Welcome. The buzz looks good. Yes, most guys really have a good head shape for going sly. Just takes a buzz to prove it. When you're ready break out the razor and apply the 30 day rule.
-
I think the buzz cut looks great Tom. Eventually you will be tempted to shave. Curiosity will get hold of you. Good luck in the army!
-
I buzzed it to 1mm without a guard today. I like the sandpaper-feeling 8).
-
Nice job!
-
Well done, mate. Next, go to a real barber and ask for a zero cut then you will know what you will look like bald as the zero cut is as close to shaved bald that you will get.
All the best.

Welcome!
In the same boat here, 19 yo, and I've got the exact same hairline as you. Strange thing is though, it seems my hairloss has stalled, as I can't see that it has receded any more in the last few months.
Can any professionals on this matter say if he has just a mature hairline (which I'm starting to believe in my case), or if it is a receding hairline?

I've had a hairline like that for years. As I get old, some people say I have a receding hairline, but it's been like that since I was a young guy, but I took that as a good excuse to shave my head. And I really enjoy the look and feel. I was buzzed for about 5 years, then broke out the razor. Much prefer the shaved feel. Looks almost the same, but feels much better.
-
It might just be a mature hairline, because my hairline has always been really high up, and now with some additional recession it just looks weird/bad. I guess I'll have to see in the coming months/years :) I could upload a clearer picture if anyone would want that..
-
Looks great Tom, mine started going at around 18 so I know how it feels, and I'm glad you're making the choice preemptively rather than waiting.
-
Buzz/sly looks good on you, good head shape bro
-
The shorter I cut it, the more I wanna go full sly. Might shave it all off with a razor next week.
-
Tom, what encouraging words!
My sentiments, exactly. The shorter you buzz your head, the more you want to shave it all off. And when you finally do, it is a very freeing feeling.
You'll never want to go back to hair again. Guys, Tom needs some encouragement.
Post a picture or two when you do.
-
Welcome Tom. he buzz looks great. Much less maintenance too.
Thanks also for volunterring for the army. I am an Army VIetnam Vet myself.
Good luck in the Army.
-
TomD didn't volunteer; he was conscripted.
-
First of all, welcome here!
The shorter I cut it, the more I wanna go full sly. Might shave it all off with a razor next week.
I did the same : cutting shorter and shorter until I decided to shave.

Quick update.
I've been rocking the no guard 1mm buzz for a while now, and I can't go back to a longer buzz. The first thing I did when I came home from a 9 days long family vacation was to buzz it all off. It hides the horseshoe pattern and feels so nice. I've come to realize I probably won't grow it out ever again. I'm saying farewell to my hair at 18. And I'm (99%) happy with that.
No pictures yet, but I'll post some at some point!
-
Tom, it's good to hear that you are so pleased with your new look. A bald head is much nicer than the horseshoe. When you are ready, go ahead and shave it bald. It will look essentially the same as what you have right now, but it will feel much better. A shaved smooth head has a very nice feel to it.
It's been fun to read your progress to SLY. It mirrors the story of so many guys on this site. I'm looking forward to your sly photos when you are ready to post.
-
Thanks for update ! So glad you found SBG ! You are an inspiration to us all and especially the young guys dealing with premature male pattern balding. O0

I'm off to the army tomorrow, where I will fit right in with my (almost) hairless head! Feeling great with my 1mm buzz as usual :)
-
Thanks for the latest update. You're nearly shaved head looks great and will suit you well in the army. Hope they let you keep it up.
Good start to a life time of SLY. Army is probably not a spot in life where you will have time the shave your head every day, but some day you can do that. You'll be ready and you can enjoy the pampering of a few minutes each day as you keep your head bald.
-
Good luck in the Army Tom. Remember, whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
-
Good luck, Tom! Army Strong...Hooah!

Thanks for serving your country

I can tell how you look with your buzz cut that you would look really awesome sly. Completely sly. Anyway, thank you for your service from me as well I have nothing but the utmost admiration for those who sacrifice so much to protect our freedoms.

I'm on my first leave, thanks for all the comments! And as someone already pointed out, I'm conscripted, not volunteering actually! I'm not from the states either, but thanks anyways I guess :) I've been trying to shave (no guard buzz) once a week in the army.
